i sure as hell didn't, but luckily stumbled into it anyway. The show and concept annoy me really, but it was great to hear JC put up with/subvert Sue Lawley's patronising interview technique. For some reason you can't listen again; I thought all BBC stuff was up for a week at least...? I was going to list what he chose, but the

duh. I really shouldn't fumble about with html. Oh well. the list of songs is here:

brautigan again!

what is it with brautigan and the precious set?

he chose mouldy old dough , by lt pigeon, i had a feeling he...might

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

he also chose the shipping forecast music 'sailing by', which is one of my favourite ever tunes - has no one written words for it yet?
who are the "precious set"?

zappi (joni), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

er, that milieu of indie that is a bit literary and, you know, precious!

they all seem to love brautigan. and i can never fathom out why

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

oh.

zappi (who loves brautigan too but was unaware of being precious in any way) (jo, Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I thought he was just enjoyed by people who like good writers.

Failin Huxley (noodle vague), Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

desert island dics is different to other programmes, i dont think you can "listen again" becasue of copyrgith issues, with all the music and stuff. they are having problems with it in respect to the move to mp3/share all their archives anyway, i know that much.

ambrose (ambrose), Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Hey Charlton, this thread attempted to nail the appeal of Brautigan for the twee set. Edna Welthorpe, Mrs seems to hit the N on the H.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Sunday, 24 April 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

I misread 'Brautigan' as 'Branigan' (as in Laura) and I thought 'he's giving away a bit much here isn't he'. If Richard Brautigan is anyone's favourite writer once they've left school they should read some more books.

snotty moore, Sunday, 24 April 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

apt name

zappi (joni), Sunday, 24 April 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

Good choices!

Pradaismus (Dada), Friday, 29 April 2005 07:53 (twenty years ago)

Interesting - in their different ways, the Engelbert Humperdinck and Dory Previn tracks both contained recognisable elements of JC's cadences/writing style. The way he talked about them, it was clear that they were formative influences in some way. It was as if he was lifting the lid to his box of tricks for a moment or two; I found myself thinking "Oh, so maybe THAT'S where part of it came from..."

Oh, and substitute Brautigan (upthread) for Scott Chuffing Walker, as in "why DO these people always pick Scott Chuffing Walker?" (Sorry, but I've never Got the man, so I tend to come over all snarky in his presence. I think it must be a defence mechanism.)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 29 April 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

Ah Michael, and we were getting on so well... :-(

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, Marcello. It was always going to come out some day. (What's the emoticon for a watery, sheepish smile?)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 29 April 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, Marcello. It was always going to come out some day.

I'm gonna sue the BBC for what he said about Sheffield having 'spirit'.
