Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 25 April 2005 07:45 (twenty years ago)

I've only heard the Gorillaz once but it sounded awful!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 25 April 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

Each to their own I suppose. I like it anyway. Possibly for sentimental reasons attached to the last one.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 25 April 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

12. Beck - guero

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 25 April 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

11. Gorillaz - Demon Days

-- Kv_nol (kdno...), April 25th, 2005.

Guy Incognito (Guy Incognito), Monday, 25 April 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

I didn't like any of these albums except for the Vitalic one.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 25 April 2005 12:43 (twenty years ago)

The thread thats sure to go from "2005 albums that were hotly anticipated AND delivered" to "2005 albums"

dmun, Monday, 25 April 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Sufjan Stevens "Illinois", at least on first half-listen.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Monday, 25 April 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

I looked at the UK album charts yesterday and for a moment thought that Sufjan Stevens was number five. It actually turned out to be Shakin Stevens (even more bizarrely)

Kim Tortoise, Monday, 25 April 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Actually Guy, I was anticipating it. Sad but true.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 25 April 2005 13:43 (twenty years ago)

19. Ellen Allien - Thrills

temeraire (r h), Monday, 25 April 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

I keep going to record stores looking to buy new music mentioned on ILM, and by the time the thing is actually released, I feel like it's old news - I was looking for the Mary Timony record a month ago and then I finally saw it I thought, hmm.. nahh.. another day. So is that Malkmus record out or not?

I agree on M.I.A., and on NIN. I guess Kristen Hersh's album with 50 Foot Wave (Golden Ocean) wasn't super anticipated but I love it.

Fischerspooner? meh, say I..

daria g (daria g), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Not Your Usual Bollocks, Monday, 25 April 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

i dont think malkmus & spoon count, matt, primarily because they havent been officially released yet.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 25 April 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

21. Smog - A River Ain't Too Much To Love

I don't see how its not being in stores affects its deliverance or all round goodness.

The best thing on the Fischerspooner record is the Boredoms cover, which itself is about 30% as good as the original.

danski (danski), Monday, 25 April 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

m83 and mars volta definatly no. i was anticipating the antony album, and i liked it quite a bit as well. is the ellen allien out yet?

No to New Order, no to Doves. Yes to Bloc Party.

D.G. Jones (D.G. Jones), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

plans does exactly what it sets out to do i think. kill me.

marc(drums) (marcdrums), Sunday, 11 September 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

Rogue Wave seconded here. Brilliant album.
Bright Eyes' both albums are still in my regular playlist.

35. Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better With Franz Ferdiand

-- Spencer Chow (spencercho...), September 10th, 2005.

Umm, you're fucking kidding about the these albums right? Cuz i would put all of these on the biggest letdowns of the year. Good albums on their own, but given the expectation and the final shoddy product (when all artists delivered in the past) wrong wrong wrong.

Mon Star2 (hydraulis2), Sunday, 13 November 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

Bettye Lavette's I've Got My Own Hell to Raise was hotly anticipated in certain circles. It delivers like the hand of god.

Roy Kasten, Sunday, 13 November 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

White Stripes--Get Behind Me Satan

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Sunday, 13 November 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

Six Organs Of Admittance - School Of The Flower
Teenage Fanclub - Man-Made
Super Furry Animals - Love Craft

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Sunday, 13 November 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

definitely wolf parade. i haven't been so excited about a straight-up rock album as this in years!

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 13 November 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

people the BoC album sucked.. it was the bands fault for doing so good before, they couldn't top the past releases.

everyone knows Jan Jelenik's Kosmischer Pitch was a better record, its in the Onion for christ's sake!

Mon Star2 (hydraulis2), Sunday, 13 November 2005 11:20 (twenty years ago)

Not sure if I would agree with a bunch of these but Elbow has proven that they are a good band. Kate Bush and Babyshambles are proving better than I ever thought possible.

BeeOK (boo radley), Sunday, 13 November 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Smog, MIA and dEUS are pretty good. Can't really think of anything else.

Nathalie, the Queen of Frock 'n' Fall (stevie nixed), Sunday, 13 November 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

murcof

keyth (keyth), Sunday, 13 November 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Jelinek seconded

System of a Down - Mezmerize / Hypnotize

Simon H. (Simon H.), Sunday, 13 November 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Supernature was a huge letdown.

chrisco (chrisco), Sunday, 13 November 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Clearly only Confessions On A Dancefloor really fits here.

Dave Goes To The Discothèque (scarlet), Sunday, 13 November 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

depeche mode: playing the angel

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 13 November 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Broken Social Scene.

footlog, Sunday, 13 November 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

if "deliver" = "basically the same as the last album, no more no less", misc and der dritte raum shouldnt go unmentioned.

mi, Sunday, 13 November 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

JOGGERS - WITH A CAPE AND A CANE

wise up to the good stuff

http://www.startimerecords.com/images/joggers/joggers_cape_150.jpg

corey c (shock of daylight), Sunday, 13 November 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

Well the Joggers album wasn't hotly anticipated for me because I had never heard of them, but that album definitely belongs on my MOST PLEASANT SURPRISES list. Great stuff, and I'm surprised it's not more widely talked about. It really is the only indie rock album I've heard this year that is trying something new and succeeding.

Their first album is pretty good, but nothing compared to this new one. The intricate guitar lines are so key, and that sitar! That's my only gripe--needs more sitar!

Patrick South (Patrick South), Sunday, 13 November 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

48. Calvin Johnson - Before the Dream Faded

i dug the joggers' instrumentation but could not handle the fake british accent.

Kevin Erickson, Sunday, 13 November 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Double Leopards keep surprising me with fascinating sounds on everything they release.

rizzx, Monday, 14 November 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Umm, you're fucking kidding about the these albums right? Cuz i would put all of these on the biggest letdowns of the year. Good albums on their own, but given the expectation and the final shoddy product (when all artists delivered in the past) wrong wrong wrong.

Actually, if you'd care to use the search function, I think you'll find many positive reviews, some of which describe those particular albums as career bests. Different opinions, it's a wild concept I know.

the ghost of ilx past, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

"White Stripes--Get Behind Me Satan"

PFFFFTBHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA! sorry, pal, this one belongs in the dumpster along w/ any DMB related projects.

for me, the stuff i expected the least from, was the stuff i found to be the most compelling to come back to.

beck-guero
gorillaz-demon days
silver jews- blanking on the name currently

stuff i expected a lot from, was the worst...

queens of the stone age- lullabize- bites
white stripes- g.b.m.s.- "WTF?"as i threw it out the window of my car
trail of dead-worlds apart- did elton john join this group?!!!

guess i didn't really get too much this year...

eedd, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

The Shortwave Set and Sugababes pretty effortlessly met my expectations, while Cagedbaby did with slightly more difficulty. Girls Aloud may defy my expectations, but then I thought that after 'Love Machine' came out, so I'll remain skeptical there.

BARMS, Wednesday, 23 November 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

I was looking forward to vitalic, lcd soundsystem and mia at the start of the year. the first two delivered, I liked the mia as well but I ended up preferring the piracy mix. broadcast delivered for me as well.

turboalbino (haitch), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

i guess i'd say the Broadcast album.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

R. Kelly's TP3!

Baaderonixx weaves a daisy chain for... SATAN!! (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

demon days delivered. but slowly. took a lot longer to get into it than i expected.

also - lcd soundsystem and rachel stevens totally delivered, though whether the RS album was actually hotly anticipated is another matter.

mark e (mark e), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Malkmus, Missy, and Opeth were all hotly anticipated (by me) and all delivered beyond my expectations.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Kanye West
Go-Betweens
The Hold Steady
Madonna

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)
