Timo Maas, Classic or Dud.

His new single sounds overproduced and like what Garbage might do if they took a dated by 4 or 5 years big beat direction. It also owes alot to "Dirt" by Death in Vegas.

However he deserves praise for the Azzido Da Bass remix and also for his remix of Kelis-Young, Fresh and New.

It seems to me, judging from his mix album, he is not much cop live either. What says ILM?

also doesn't the Azzido Da Bass remix remind you of that Mr Oizo song from the Levis ad?

Ronan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What's baffling about Maas is that his remix of "Doom's Night" is both the most popular *and* the most clever thing he's done, so why does none of his other material sound much like it? Burbly bass + slippery beats = better schtick than most. He should, heh, schtick with it (sorry).

P.S. Ronan have you heard the Stanton Warriors' *Dub* mix of "Where's Your Head At?" I have regained faith.

Tim, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is that the official remix? on the single?

I've heard the official one, which I liked, by them. And also another mysterious one which is really minimal but totally classic. I heard the latter in a club so I don't know who it is.

Ronan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

who fuck what hell shit?

XStatic Peace, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's the minimal but totally classic version. Note: this is basically what a lot of the best 2-step sounded like in 2001. Really cool to hear the Stanton Warriors picking up on the *exact* direction I would have picked up on if I was them: the ruff dancehall beat of da future!

Tim, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...In comparison the "proper" remix sounds a bit pedestrian. I like it too but I was slightly frustrated that it actually sounded to me like a step backwards from the "Jump & Shout" remix. Whereas the dub = leap forward.

On the money. Doom's Night rmx = classic of course. I have heard that double mix-cd which was unspectacular.

That dub remix by Stanton Warriors sounds really ace.

Wikkid Crew played some minimal and super classic version of WYHA before So Solid Crew came on last Friday - I wuz wonderin who mighta done it. Thank you!

Timo's remix of "Flash" by Green Velvet is AMAZING!! I saw him DJ at Twilo last year and it was pretty dud, tho.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Timo was pretty hot there for a while....I think people have cooled on him - I'm sure he will remain a decent producer/remixer, but I don't hear of too many people getting excited about his DJing anymore.

It's very predictable. Mix thru to the end of the breakdown... over... and over.. and over...

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If anyone wants that Stanton Warriors dub, let me know. Now that I have it on computer it's not quite as spectacular as I remember, but it's still the best thing they've done in a while.

you can find the stanton warriors dub on audiogalaxy under "basement jaxx stanton warriors dub".

have you got a best of 2001 garage list coming out, tim? i'm keen to see what i missed last year...

Toby: yes. Stay tuned.

Only listened to it once so I reserve the right to retract all these comments, but the new solo album is patchy -- despite the Kelis collab that opens it being lovely: little tics of rattling synth, swirling, almost-Vespertine orchestral splashes, and Kelis recast as a cross between Marlena Shaw and Liz Fraser. The beat's not quite Stantons breakbeat and not quite 2-step, but works despite itself. And, for no reason, there's a weird robotic/demonic voice in the middle. (A Good Thing)

And from what I recall, Timo was ace when he followed Dave Clarke at Fabric -- nothing like the mix albums, which sounded really good in bursts but weren't nearly fleshy enough as a whole -- but thick enough on the bass to make 4am feel like fun again.

five months pass...
"Shifter" has been all over the place here (or at least the video) & I'm intrigued by the vox - MC Chickaboo(?) sounds like a catatonic paranoiac being forced to sound exultant at gunpoint - absolutely perfect & I'd like to hear more (though that could be because those sort of vocals are extremely uncommon here in Aotearoa). & "To Get Down" is very, um, catchy though I don't know if I should like it (it reminds me of when I got "You've Come A Long Way, Baby" when I was 15 & it was the third album I'd ever purchased & danced around my room & felt like I could get out of Rotorua). So, er, has anyone else listened to the album since Jan? Is it any good?
