Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Also: Without New Edition there's no New Balance, no Le Tigre means no Tivas and no Dr. John = no Doc. Martins.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Anyway: No Giorgio=No Timbaland.
Yea or nay?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

YEA! or no Neptunes either. Moroder paved the way for their avant/garde dancepop rpoductions and innovative use of the recording studio. Maybe hsi methods are more influential on this style of hiphop than the scratching and breaking of old school rap itself.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 25 April 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Without Moroder, Kraftwerk would've ended up somewhere entirely different, meaning that post 1982 Hip-Hop wouldn't have become obsessed with drum machines.

pre77 Kraftwerk-> 77+ Moroder-> 77+ Kraftwerk-> 82+ Hip-Hop

Maybe you're suggesting Timbaland, Neptunes, et al are revisting Moroder more than other Hip-Hop/R&B/Rap acts?

I personally think the whole thing is a result of sampling becoming too costly, which brings it full circle by doodling on keyboards again.

Without Timbaland's Mom there is no Timbaland.

Sure, but furthermore that Moroder is an unsung power that can be heard behind 50% of pop radio.

I imagine him as the Wizard behind the curtain...

the password is: kraftwerk

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

Dunno Strongo; I hear more Georgio than Kraftwerk in th' Neptunes.
Not to downplay the tremendous influence of th' Krauts, but still...

there is a direct line between kraftwerk and timbaland/the neptunes via miami bass.

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

it's also total bullshit because it ignores everything ELSE that went into the first twenty-five odd years of timothy mosley's life: dj premier, teddy riley, sly stone, DANCEHALL.

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

james brown, ann peebles, the geto boys, DANCEHALL, the spider-man theme song, did i mention DANCEHALL

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

strongo you forgot Bjork and DANCEHALL!!

but not d&b and jungle. Remember that interview with him back in like '97 or so when someone suggested the influence and he was like "I don't know nothing about no bass and drum... drum and bass, whatever."

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:48 (twenty years ago)

That reminded me of the time at my high school newspaper when a record review that either I or my best friend wrote (I really can;t remember) that mentioned drum & bass was edited so that the sentence read something like "DJ xx spun a mix of techno, drum, bass and house styles" or something like that.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

"there is a direct line between kraftwerk and timbaland/the neptunes via miami bass."

This one lost me.

However, Dancehall=OTM

PappaWheelie, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

timbaland prob doesnt even know who moroder is.

ppp, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Actually in that NY Times profile of him from a year or so ago, he said he was mainly listening to old folk and country stuff like the "O Brother Where Art Thou" sound track.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

if I was timbaland at this point in his career, I'd probably listen to anything other than dance beats too.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Timbo's remarked at various times that he wants to be a genre blind producer; going so far as to say that he'd like to do country. His stabs with Beck and Utada Hikaru suggest that he'd like to do some non-hip hop production, even if that drive seems to have stagnated a bit.

I don't know whether or not Tim's familiar with Moroder; my suggestion was (and is) that Moroder's work and remarkable sound (perhaps most specifically with Donna Summer) paved the way for him.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

I can't think of a single Timbaland song that sounds even remotely like Moroder though.

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

"Love To Love You"?

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Moroder likes drones more than Timbaland, he really fills out his sound with washes in a way Timbaland does not. However, insofar as Moroder's influence on synth-based dance music is so massive, I don't think the thread title is all that bold a statement....

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

thirteen years pass...
