I've been listening to "Straight From the Heart" today, and although it falls a little short of "I can't stand the rain" its a fantastic album. I love the way both albums sound - there isn't excessive instrumentation, but it sounds full, and complete, and like there isn't anything else you'd want in a song.

I'm a relatively new convert. I'm currently loving "99 pounds"; "I'm gonna tear your playhouse down" and "I've been there before". What else did she do that was good? What do you think of her?

She's like the woman version of Al Green in the 70's. It's a good thing.

Cunga (Cunga), Monday, 25 April 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

no she isn't.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 25 April 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Is it worth buying the albums or is that hi singles collection enough?

Masked Gazza, Monday, 25 April 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

can you imagine al singing i feel like breaking up somebody's home?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 25 April 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

wow, i didn't realize she had so many albums. i doubt you'll find a stinker in the Hi catalogue (this goes for almost all 70s artists on Hi)

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 25 April 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

hi jason. thought you'd quit?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 25 April 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

I'd go for the trifecta -- Part Time Love, Straight from The Heart & I Can't Stand the Rain -- though they're quite short as CDs go so maybe not a total bargain.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Monday, 25 April 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

hi, gary. i've toned down.

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 25 April 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

she is great, but way more pedestrian than al green.

In terms of lyrics she's not like Al Green at all but I always felt the overall production and sound was similar to Al's. Hope that clarifies that.

Al would never write a song like "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down". He was more "Let's Play House".

Cunga (Cunga), Monday, 25 April 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

yeah, those 3 Hi LPs, Part-Time Love, Straight from the Heart, I Can't Stand the Rain, are all you need from Ann. Or you could get the Hi Times 3-CD box, and get her best stuff along with all those cool early Hi instrumentals and so forth.

Good, actually, though, I always liked Laura Lee better.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Monday, 25 April 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

me too, maybe.

Two Sides of Laura Lee -- mmm boy!

well, yeah, they had the same producer/arranger and often the same band...

al green's vocal approach is totally sui generis and of a delicacy that's totally unmatched in the genre. peebles is a great soul singer but not nearly so unusual or revelatory as green often is. but i do like her. i like that she's not quite as INSISTENT as so many female soul singers. that INSISTENCE often grates on me, even when the music is inarguably genius, cf. candi staton and laura lee.

Lots of the Hi Records LPs from the era have the same sound, since they used the same producer and rhythm section. None of them are as great as Al Green or Ann Peebles, but these are worth checking out:

O.V. Wright
Syl Johnson
Otis Clay

Also the rhythm section released an odd solo record that kinda blended Memphis with disco with Funkadelic-y oddness

Also (and apologies if this is a basic or boring recommendation) they backed Cat Power on The Greatest, which is pretty uneven but has some wonderful moments

And this one is like somebody put Otis Redding through the Hi Records machine:

The Eagles ripped off that Otis clay record almost wholesale for "The Long Run".

I haven't heard much Carla Thomas, I know this one from Kent's essential "At The Club" V/A comp, and it seems to forecast some of Peebles' uptempo numbers...

Ruby Johnson was one of my favorite discoveries in the first Stax box, and this comp is all top notch:

A lot of Johnnie Taylor's Stax stuff works those slinky grooves.

Maybe some Denise Lasalle would work too

“I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home Tonight," damn that's sweet, from daddino's mixcloud i'm listening to. i recognize her from "i cant stand the rain" and "tear your playhouse down," want more like this.
