Is there something wrong with me?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

You've been brainwashed.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

Isn't there, like, two dozen Loveless threads this could have been posted to?

everything, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Probably. I felt like making a new one.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

I used to dislike it but now I'm glad it's there.

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

i am on the opposite end of the spectrum. this could well be my least favourite MBV recording, excepting maybe the very first LP.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

Don't listen to these people. It's great!

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

I like it very much. It's occasionally my favorite non-"Soon" track, but not usually.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

I love it, but it's not my favourite on the album. I do wish they had done more stuff like it (and like the Instrumental A/B tracks).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

If "Touched" and "To Here Knows When" could be treated as a single song, that would be my favourite track on the album.

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

"2" is my favorite 'incidental' track. It's a crime that it's not available. I'm actually still trying to get La La La Human Steps to get me a copy somehow.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

What to add that hasn't been said.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

are you actively trying spencer? because they are around the corner from me (literally, i'm on the same city block as them)! also i used to live in lou1se lec4valier's old apartment and i'd get mail for her all the time!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

"Touched" is about as awesome as filler gets.

Still filler, though--can't possibly compare to "When You Sleep," "Sometimes," "Soon," "What You Want," etc.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

"Soon" is actually my least favorite. Should have been booted in favor of "Honey Power," which should've been placed after "When You Sleep" (and would have made for the best track 1-7 suite in the history of recorded music!). "What You Want" is the PERFECT closer.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

"Only Shallow" is the one that should've been booted. That song is all in the first two seconds.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki, you should really try to befriend them over time and then get a copy of that track (sleep with someone if you have to). It really is perfect, but I have only ever seen low-quality mp3s. It's the purest and most blissed out miasma ever recorded. I will give you big bucks if you get a CD quality version.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

For some reason it reminds of the music for some video game's boss, but whatever - it's pretty freakin' good. Not my favorite on the album, though.

shanecavanaugh (shanecavanaugh), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

GDB, you are high. "only shallow" is 100% without a doubt unequivocally make no bones about it fer sher the best song on loveless.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

Funny, it has the same effect on me, particularly the first few seconds.

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 04:29 (twenty years ago)

Ditto. Bowser and SMB64 pop into my head, but that's not it.

Spencer Chow: You can't say that and then not expect one of us to say "me want/need hear", so it's gonna be me.

shanecavanaugh (shanecavanaugh), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, a lot of that last message had formatting.

shanecavanaugh (shanecavanaugh), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 04:56 (twenty years ago)

NO FOOLS IT IS "SOMETIMES"

(sorry, just had to yell that)

box.of.rox, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

Funny, I don't even think of individual songs on Loveless. That whole album is just one big slab of blurry, queasy see-saw molasses guitar sludge, in only the best possible way. The one moment that stands out is the lyric that a Sugar song shares, if I remember right? "Tell me I'm your favorite thing" or something like that.

Joseph B. Cowart (flamingrev), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Whoever said 'Honey Power' = OTM

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Sugar song is cover of MBV track!

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I never understood all the love for "Only Shallow". It's a great opener and all, but I can't see how it stands out as a highlight on Loveless. If I had to rank them, I'd probably put at least 7 or 8 other songs above it to be honest.

xpost to Joseph: I think that's "Blown a Wish"

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

"Only Shallow" = "Hooray I'm Listening to LOVELESS!!!!"

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

haha, fair enough :)

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Mr. Grout explains it very well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Shane, Here is "2".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

... where?

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

whoops!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

HERE!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

it's all about what you wany for me, that beautiful levitated flute amongst dirty glide guitar, i wish the ending lasted for ever sometimes.

escobar kid, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

Awesome. Thanks. I went on a mad search that spanned file-sharing programs when you mentioned it. I found the first incidental the "peace" incidental pretty easily.

And wow, you weren't kidding. When I first started hearing about miasma, this song is similar to what I thought it would sound like. "It's the purest and most blissed out miasma ever recorded." Kevin Smith probably did stuff like this all the time, just jamming around. Damn his miserliness.

shanecavanaugh (shanecavanaugh), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

"Sugar" (Only Shallow b-side) >>>>>> "Only Shallow"

No tune at all on the latter. Just a lot of cool sound effects.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

"Touched" is my favorite song on Ridin' Dirty

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

xpost

No tune??? WRONG!

I do love "Sugar" very very much though, and it's not really an "Only Shallow" b-side - it's technically earlier and only came out on flexi with The Catalogue mag and a weird French promo CD.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

'Isn't Anything' is SUCH a sexy album.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

That instrumental is amazing.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Seriously! I'd forgotten about that. It'd be a great start toward a Loveless followup IMO.

That will never happen, will it.

sleep (sleep), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

i have that flexi! i know "sugar"! and senator, "sugar" is no "only shallow"!
