One Band, One Year

Bands that were on top of the world for exactly one year, and never really bothered the public much again, thus remaining inextricably tied to that year for all time.

Example that inspired the thread idea:

Jesus Jones - 1991

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

2005--Arcade Fire. wishful thinking counts, right?

buick mastodon, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

EMF - 1991

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:16 (twenty years ago)

Save Ferris - 1997

...thankfully.

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

Ricky Martin-1999

Cunga (Cunga), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

remember how I said in the "hero to most" thread that people were taking the term "most" loosely? I think this thread is taking the term "top of the world" loosely.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

...maybe, but not me!

The Knack, 1979
Hootie, 1995

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Hootie is the best example possible (except that Alanis owned that year... and no others!)

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

"Macarena" was '95 too, right? Los Del Rio kinda ran thangs that year too. Man, 1995 was without a doubt one of the worst years of popular music ever, huh?

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

Technotronic, '90-'91

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 04:02 (twenty years ago)

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

Ride - 1990

glen mcgrath (gjm), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 06:31 (twenty years ago)

Ace of Base was late '93 - early '94

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 07:00 (twenty years ago)

Chesney Hawkes - not even a year, about one month in Spring 1991.

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

Engelbert Humperdinck - 1967

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

The Fugees and Frampton are great answers, yeah. Arrested Development would be the definitive answer but I think "Mr. Wendell" was a '93 hit.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Ice Ice Baby - 92 or 93 or 94?

Jabberwocky (Jabberwocky), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

....'90?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

"Ride - 1990"
I believe "Going Blank Again" (1992) was their most commercially successful album & their tours in 91 & 92 were certainly more momentous in scope and scale than in 1990.

Anyway, I'll go with Kula Shaker - 1997

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Babylon Zoo. January 1996

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Fiona Apple - '97

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

The Beatles - 1964 - present

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

The Buckinghams, 1967 (not quite "top of the world," but they did score 5 top 20 hits in 13 months, and then disappeared entirely)

Ja Rule, 2001 (see "wishful thinking" note above)

Bush, 1994

NKOTB, 1990 (give or take a few months)

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Basically, ABC 1982.

Some great stuff after that, but never remotely close to being as huge as they were in 1982.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

"Debbie Gibson mid 1988 to mid 1989" - to add to this period: The Escape Club, Fine Young Cannibals, Was (not Was), and Tone Loc

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

..and how about Edie Brickell and New Bohemians

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

I think all the Hammer stuff is rather off. It seems more like each year, he got passed to a different crowd (which almost describes Stereolab, for that matter...)

1988: Underground Hip-Hop (Feel My Power - Pump it Up)

1989: Yo! MTV Mainstay (Let's Get it Started - Turn this Mutha Out)

1990: Crossover, but sorta Hip-Hop (Can't Touch This)

1991: Total Mainstream (2 Legit - Taco Bell Commercials - Addams Family SDTK)

1992: Misguided (Pumps and a Rump - Funky Headhunter)

PappaWheelie, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

Candlebox - 1993 or 94..I can't remember which.

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, upon mature consideration I should retract Portishead. They were mid-94 (hipsters) to end-of-95 (dinner parties).

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

King - 1985
