remember back in the 60s when bands/artists would have those long poem things on the back of their lp sleeves?

y'know, not liner notes, but an original poem by whomever? oftentimes like not even related to lyrics or imagery on the lp? i think everyone from art ensemble of chicago to phil ochs did this. across all genres, too.

another reason why i hate cds.

ALso good was getting poets (ie. Amiri Baraka at least) to write linernotes (for John Coltrane at least)

well, baraka also wrote a lot about music, he isn't/wasn't just a poet. you should check out his music books.

i don't really hate cds.

Ginsburg did a bit of this didn't he? On the back of Fugs records and the like.

How many of them were any good? I have a fondness for the Dylan things, but even then I'm no sure...

Incredible String Band (not surprisingly) - on "Changing Horses" (I think) there is indeed a poem which is fairly epic.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

... it's a poem, it's epic and it's also quite good in an Incredible String Band-y sorta way

I've always enjoyed the poems Andrew Loog Oldham wrote on the back of Stones' LPs, especially when he tried to incorporate song titles.

Todd Rundgren included a Patti Smith poem on an insert in the A Wizard, A true Star LP, before she was widely known (73, was it?). It was printed on a small paper that looked like a band-aid.
