Music Commentators

Sparked by the London Line thread.

Footballers (this is UK football btw) quite often do a sideline in commentary or end up being commentators after they retire. Now admittedly the retirement age is higher for pop musicians but why don't more of them go on to a 'second career' in reviews and punditry? Is it because they're all bitter and disgruntled or are there just not entertaining enough outlets for them? I know if I was a lad mag publisher I'd sign up some old rock geezer to do some drunken reviews rant each month. Maybe they do!

It's "Teamwork" Vs "Individuality"

I thought you meant like the CD/alb equiv of 'Director's Commentaries' on DVDs...

Hey those too!!

Actually they would be rubbish.

I disagree...some commentary tracks would be hilarious.

True, some would be just rote and boring, but the tracks from bands that have broken up? Or the ones that have great stories behind them, like George Clinton's "play like your mama just died" guidance to Eddie Hazel?

I mean, I understand that this would have a HIGH potential to develop into a strictly audio version of VH1's "Storytellers", but what about acts that would never be on said show? 2 Live Crew? Come on...the commentary to "The Fuck Shop" would be worth the cost of the entire album.

Would they be scared to criticise their 'fellow professionals' in the way that ex-footballers are?

Out of interest, wasn't Round Table a bunch of 'pundits' running the rule on the new releases?

Last night I saw some of the North London derby with no commentary, and I think I watched the ball more closely.

Lloyd Cole and Johnny Marr could have their own Music Commentary TV show. They could comment on their own records a lot, as well as a few others. I like the sound of this programme.

You'd have to find the right host. 99% of all old pop stars would be horrible at it, but I bet you could find one or two who would be hilarious because they wouldn't care who they infuriated. A few years ago, I'd say Ted Nugent, but he's overexposed now. One of the Gallaghers in a few years, maybe?

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Certainly not the Gallaghers, ever.

people who on past form would be good at this: Daphne & Celeste, Amy Winehouse, Jordan, Diamanda Galás.
