It was either that or the Manic Street Preachers again.

I think that every town pavillion should be renamed Anti-imperialist Plaza.

This is the best rock music that has ever been played on this island." Hell, make that on this earth.

sister bluebird, Tuesday, 26 April 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Did he play "I'm So Straight I'm a Weirdo"? "Do You Believe in Fairies"?

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

and he's a TORY, to boot!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)

Dear Cuba,

How many Rick Wakeman solo albums have you heard, anyway?

Joe (Joe), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

no ice capades! but he did have SOME of the props that have made him so well-known and loved:

Wakeman wore a sequined red, white and gold cape as he played center-stage, while the NERE's lead singer sported a traditional tropical shirt known as a guayabera.

He traded the cape for a glittery purple jacket and a wizard's hat when he went down to play in the crowd, grabbing a Cuban girl to come onstage and hold his portable keyboard as he continued to play, without missing a beat.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

Ex-YES? Whaaa? When did this happen (again)?

Wakeman roolz.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

wizard's hat! YES!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

(no pun intended)

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

In a country with such strict freedom of speech laws a song like Anarchy in the UK never freed them from 70's prog-rock.

Communism and prog-rock, enslaving humanity 18:37 seconds at a time with its ambitious concepts.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 03:57 (twenty years ago)

If only the poor people of Cuba knew that. :(

Cunga (Cunga), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

Fidel and Rick both wear capes.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

This doesn't really surprise me. I think Cuba has a strong muso streak. I don't hear much prog. in timba, but I do hear lots of jazz and fusion. There seems to be lots of emphasis on and appreciation of virtuosity, maybe partly due to the quality of music education there.

RS, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Don't they also mostly drive 40 year old cars?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

God, I keep reading this thread title and thinking of Cuba Gooding drawing hearts on a Tiger Beat magazine.

I thought he used to support Tory.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

if he's tory, he probably REALLY supports MONEY. and as long as he gets paid, he prob. doesn't care WHERE the $$ comes from (and he's probably insisted that he gets paid in american $$ or british pounds, and not the toilet paper that passes for currency in cuba).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Next up? Audioslave.

Somewhere, a bemused Zack de la Rocha sits with very mixed feelings.
