i just wanted to remind everyone of this.

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

although i do want a yes album.

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

also i am younger than all of you.

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well there's plenty of time for you to grow out of it then haha. Devo != rock ps.

Gotta go time for fat club.

mark s, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are you considering the Apples a "pop" band or something?

Ni~|suh, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, and what about the Turtles?

Mark, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes and ditto kinks (since i only have vgps!) and b&s.

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's weird that your token Who albums are "Sell Out" and "A Quick One" and not "Live at Leeds" and "Who's Next". But I approve!

Arthur, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks for the reminder. I'll schedule it in my outlook calendar to remind me every six months.

Ally, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh i also have electric ladyland but that hardly counts.

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Right. They weren't a rock band; they were an Experience.

Curt, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You also like apostrophe, Mr. Padgett. Remember?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"although i do want a yes album"

shouldn't that be i want the yes album?

David, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that's a fusion album, listen to the title track!

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

re: apostrophe.

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

also it's terrible (listen to all the other tracks)

mark s, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No punk?

Mark, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

just himself!

Dare, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

in theory i should like punk (since the only rock bands i like are the who and devo, you know!) but i hate it so so so much. oh i like marquee moon but i don't own it.

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We have *so* much in common. (If you don't consider Talking Heads a rock band, esp.)

Keiko, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ooh i like them too but i never know which record to buy.

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

grrr

Erm erm the only hiphop i like = THE AGE OF CHANCE!! There!! see!!

mark s, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am making damn sure that the next mix I send you contains lots and lots of guitars. It's too bad there isn't a recording of that Glenn Branca orchestral performance from last year; I'd send you that, too.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maria is younger than you and she likes Momus.

Tom, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also Devo = the Company Flow of rock.

The only Bhangra act I like is the Safri Brothers!

(judging from one play of the Rough Guide to Bhangra. Kill me.)

Tom, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Talking Heads Album To Buy = Remain In the Light. hands down. thumbs up. seven up.

Brock K, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fear Of Music > Remain In Light

RickyT, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

surely the co flow of rock will be el-p's inevitable rock band? anyway the thing about that comparison is that i don't mind it, liking no rap but co flow implies that you don't really like rap and i don't really like rock so i like devo.

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

also maria is not on ilm, i said i was younger than 'all of you' and it's true, everyone who has read this thread is older than me. especially mark s!

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm seventeen. And with trademark youthful exuberance I say "REMAIN IN LIGHT! REMAIN IN LIGHT!"

Keiko, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you're seventeen? wow.

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How old are you Ethan?

Lindsey B, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i have been nineteen for eleven days.

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, I'm 17. But this thread isn't about me. It's about how rock music is boring. Now it is time to talk about why Devo is better than the Doors.

Keiko, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I said this in the other thread before I saw this one, but Ethan, the fact that you only like two bands makes you ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENT from most hip-hop fans I know. Genre blinders (and a strange pride therein) are a common accessory for people really into hip-hop, at least in my experience. Interesting thread topic perhaps?

Clarke B., Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that's the whole point of this thread, what a great thing to say that is. look how flustery everyone here got and i've said it on ilm like ten times before in the past year.

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan, Fear of Music is the Talking Heads album to get, in my opinion. It's darker than the others.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now that you mention it Dave, I'd really like to know if anyone has any sort of recording in any form of last summer's Branca symphony. I'd really like to get my hands on anything. Please email if you know of any.

sundar subramanian, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

look how flustery everyone here got

Hm.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oooh... ethan is a rebel.... oooh....

Anyway, if those are the two Who albums you've got, they're pop and not rock.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that's a fusion album, listen to the title track!

you also like Hot Rats, The Grand Wazoo, and Waka/Jawaka, too, then? and "Sy Borg" beat you to the punch re: someone fucking robots

nb: bite yer tongues, Messrs. Singer and Munoz :-)

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

man, ethan, when it comes down to it, you got quite a lot of rock records

gareth, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

only groop i likes is ones who do real music like toploder and shed 7 and osis.

devo divvies.

who good until towend go to see opera mid class ponce.

XStatic Peace, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I suspect there is much we can all learn from listening to what ethan has to say about rock/pop

If only that were true too re hip hop ;-)

Jeff W, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, it is good to know others liek Devo. In my home-town, it is a lonely walk. The only other Devo fan is a creepy 40 year old man. He also likes Oingo Boingo, a pleasure seemingly only to me. He hangs around this restaurant and tells people what he used to do. "Hey, I used to have these Devo poster, they were all cartoons and blah blah blah.." "I used to have a belt made out of, get this, BARBED WIRE." To a skater: "I used to skateboard all over downtown! All the merchants used to yell at me, but I used to flip them off." On his tombstone, it will read "I Used To Live".

Naturally, such a man propositons (sp?) all the ladies to engage in unwholesome acts, for which he is loathed. He is vile.

When I first met him, I thought his tales were kind of amusing in their repetitive pointlessness. It had a drop of "American Splendor" feeling to it. Now, it is a constant challenge to get him to go away. It seems he is everywhere.

"He also likes Oingo Boingo, a pleasure seemingly only to me."

By this I mean I also like Oingo Boingo, and it is somewhat surprising to find another person who does. Not that it secretly pleases me (and only me) he likes them and that he is a twat.

1 1 2 3 5, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ooh i like oingo boingo.

ethan, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm nineteen also.

Lindsey B, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maria is younger than you and she likes Momus.

I am so on ILM, I just lurk mostly because you're all so much infinitely more knowledgeable and opinionated than I am. How'd I get brought into this anyway?

Maria, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wait, don't you have Slanted and Enchanted? Fuck, that's too indie rawk for me to sit through.

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan that is, not Maria.

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that was a gift and i never listen to it.

ethan, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maria = cool, of course. Oingo Boingo = a good singles comp will do ya, but those singles can be great. Even if it was all XTC in the end. ;-)
