jim kerr, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure if 'hot' has ever been the word for Harriet Wheeler - but I dare say that she is my answer to this question.

Patti Smith!

Au contraire! I think she absolutely WAS trying to be sexy, but her self-presentation was so far outside the norm for female singers that it didn't come across at all for a lot of people.

box.of.rox, Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

She spent the best part of the 70's emulating Keith Richards, whom she thought sexy. I don't think she was necessarily aiming for sexiness herself, just confident within herself to do whatever the hell she wanted...

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

Patti Smith, 1973: I sang a little song with this fur boa wrapped around me. I dropped my velvet coat to the floor and was wearing a long, ratty tee-shirt and all the women gasped. I modeled it just like they did. I knew that in some aesthetic, in some vein, I looked good.

Patti Smith, 1974: ...Being a girl, I've got to use what I got. So I think of myself as a seducer as well as an entertainer.

box.of.rox, Thursday, 28 April 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

Patti Smith, 1975: I was walking around like 'Don't Look Back,' I was part Bob Dylan, part Keith Richards, and I figured, fuck guys, I got to learn how to be a girl. So I went totally overboard. I started buying dresses and gold bracelets and going to watch Jeanne Moreau moving over and over and over again. Watching the way she walked, trying to walk in high heels, buying silk stockings, garter belts, sitting around completely self-conscious with all this stuff, trying to figure out how to mingle a garter belt with a Rolling Stone hairdo.

To me, this was all hilarious and touching and smart and totally effective.

In "Please Kill Me," someone/everyone keeps talking about Pati Smith's tits and how she's got a really nice rack but no one knows because of the shirts she wears.

Page 113: "Allen Ginsberg thought I was a cute boy and tried to pick me up, so I said 'LOOK AT THE TITS, ALLEN! NOTICE THE TITS!'"

box.of.rox, Thursday, 28 April 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

I stand corrected!

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 April 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

Not meaning to come over all crabby about this. It just happens to be something I've considered at length.

Emily Haines

william (william), Thursday, 28 April 2005 03:07 (twenty years ago)

I was actually going to say how impressed I was at the list of references...and felt like a doofus since I've read half that stuff myself, but figured I'd just make up my own unfounded theory instead.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 April 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

Ha, just give me 1/10 of a chance to marshal textual evidence pro or con any statement about Patti Smith and I am ON IT (except when it comes to arguing with haterz, which I do not bother with [I preemptively admit that her last couple of albums have been pretty much crap]). Your remark wasn't so far wrong but it gave me a chance to PWN on this point. Enjoying my little moment, I am.

box.of.rox, Thursday, 28 April 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

I'll let you have it, easily impressed tho I am. :) Always happy to buddy up with a Patti fan.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 April 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

We are united in this, you and I. Let us kidnap Alex in NYC and learn him some respect for the Patti, via what the Chinese called "intensive mind rebrushing" during the Cultural Revolution. Oh wait, what was I saying about haters? Never mind.

box.of.rox, Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

meh : /

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

But kidnapping Alex In NYC would be a conflict of interests. He's a Maiden fan too, see. Oh the conundrum...

Fie on ye, fickle fickle music, such a cruel mistress...

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

Polly Jane Harvey

Although of course she uses her sexuality in an explicit way, but not in the way that is commonly understood to be overtly "sexy".

Huey (Huey), Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:38 (twenty years ago)

xpost

OK. It was just a thought.

box.of.rox, Thursday, 28 April 2005 05:40 (twenty years ago)

Elizabeth Fraser

I love Elizabeth Fraser but I really can't think of her as "hot".
