Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Despite knowing at least 80% of the 1985 one, I only know 8 songs from this chart. 22 and 24 are the best by a mile.

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I amazed at how many of these I know and even care for considering I didn't even own a radio at the time. Bobby Brown - god, that was a great song. Damn, I even like that Weezer record. Runrig though? Jesus wept...

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

13 songs I love!

Lots of forgotten follow-ups, there.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Right, ten years on, only just still a 'postpunk indie pop kid'. I have five of those.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just noticed that Ranking Roger is in there with Pato Banton. Was that song any good?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Pato: "JUST LIKE SOUP IN A POT WE ARE WHAT???"
Roger (begrudgingly): "bubbling hot"

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

There used to be a few TV progs around this time that'd show various news/docu bits, and you'd have to pick the true from the false.

One of these had Pato 'singing' the original version of this with a parrot doing Roger's parts. Imagine a video with parrot on Pato's shoulder 'singing' "We're bubbling hot hot hot, we're bubbling hottttt.." like the parrot from the old Cariba advert.

Never heared the song the same way since. Mind you, never heard the song since, either.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah yes, remember it now. Sort of bubblin' lukewarm really. Needed a few more minutes in the microwave probably.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

what a great chart!!!! fuck britpop, '95 was the golden sunset of handbag:

15 Grace Not Over Yet
16 Strike U Sure Do

N_RQ, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

No. 13 - most individual UK Eurovision entry of the past 15 years? I bought the Let Loose album a few months back - 'Best Of Me's single version is way better than the album's. Overall, I'm just as happy with this as my 13 year old self was (fuck Bryan, sod Oasis, wow, Portishead are very good, yaya Eurodance and Bobby, house music, smoove r'n'b - yeah, who the hell is Runrig?).

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark- is the TV show you're thinking of F.O.T.?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

many great songs, many good songs, even the oasis and weezer are decent

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite probably.

Channel four had one as part of one of their extended "yoof" progs, but I'm fairly sure it was a bbc2 thing.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

many great songs, many good songs, even the oasis and weezer are decent
-- j blount (jamesbloun...), April 27th, 2005.

Oh come on, that Weezer song is fucking excellent. Dumb, singalong and undemanding but all the better for it. In a NOTOASIS way.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

19 Bjork Army Of Me

KLASSIK

runrig were like a twee scots nationalist type band.

i prefer this chart to 1985 or 2005. i am wintering till the revival comes round, cf reynolds in the observer: hey, baby boomers, get off the stage, it's time we ex-post-punks have a go!! well, i'm hanging in there for the handbag/trip hop/big beat/r'n'b era.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Joshua Kadison - dud or superdud?

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"Jessie" is my favourite song on that list...

The album is shit, though.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I have 11 of these. Favourites are 1, 3 (so shoot me), 4 (maybe you had to be there), 15, 22, 24. If it was Pick Only One, then 15. And what the hell was "Fools Gold 95"? And oh look, there's Weezer being "wacky" with a single whose initials are B.H... plus ca change.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It must say something about selective amnesia that I can remember all the 1985 hits virtually note for note/word for word, but half of the 1995 ones I struggle to recall at all.

But anyway, ones from this list worthy of worship: 15 (maybe Rob Davis' finest moment, above even "Can't Get You Out Of My Head"?), 19, 20, 22, 24.

And those to whom I would serve fresh coffee the morning after: 1-4, 14, 21.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

'fools gold 95' was there to market 'the complete stone roses' compilation. in itself it isn't audibly different from the '89 version.

16 Strike U Sure Do

i guess this is my favourite, though it wasn't at the time. i associated handbag with people haveing fun, which i wasn't, being a fourteen year old boy. i liked 'some might say' best, at that point. followed by 'fool's gold' no doubt. though i still have the bucketheads single. 'u sure do' is just big. and i can't imagine we'll see its like again.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

And those to whom I would serve fresh coffee the morning after: 1-4, 14, 21.

-- Marcello Carlin (marcellocarli...) (webmail), April 27th, 2005 9:58 AM. (link)

Umm, that means you like them, yeah?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

It's another way of saying I wouldn't kick them out of bed.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Take That, Oasis, Portishead and Love City Groove singles. I have never heard of or forgotten 80% of this chart.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Bloody modern music and young 'uns eh?

That having been said, I have never heard of or forgotten 95% of this week's chart, in some cases while they're still playing.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, yeah, i don't know who's number one, who's in the top ten, anything, right now. but hey it's all downloads and p2p now, right?

N_RQ, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

You're telling me you don't know about how "Amarillo" is kicking everyone's butt, you last two guys?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

STILL? i know i fucking hate akon. that's about it, though.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I watch TOTP with my kids, but I didn't watch it in 1995. (My kids were too small)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe I said 95%. "Amarillo" clearly comes under the 5% category of records which have stayed in my mind from this week's chart, which select membership also includes this week's number two. Coincidentally both of these records were originally hits in the '70s. Other than that, in this week's chart only numbers 14 and 15 come readily to my mind.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i like #40 obv. and having looked at the chart, i do know half of them. i had no idea the fucking levellers were back!! ignorance is bliss, sometimes.

and i am shocked and stunned that razorlight are top five, and were number two. how? how? how?

N_RQ, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Radio 2 like it.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(I knew you knew really, Marc.)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I was at the rehearsal studio last night and there was one of those equipment mags that are only seen in recording studios - on the cover it promised an article about what stuff Razorlight use. And I thought - 'Razorlight - that name sounds familiar, who are they'? Then it came back to me that I'd seen them on TOTP once or twice and after that I couldn't think of a single thing about them that would allow me to describe them to anyone. It would be like describing Nitrogen.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

16 Strike U Sure Do

The obvious stand-out for me.

I haven't heard 'Some Might Say' for years but I liked it a lot at the time. Portishead is a funny one. It sticks out but I'm not sure how much I really liked it as opposed to admiring it for being innovative.

Oak (small items), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I prefer the live version of "Sour Times" (as heard on their Live At Roseland CD) where Beth turns into the gibbering ghost of Janis Joplin at the end, but we loved Portishead at the time and still do.

I was reminding myself of the first "O"Rang album the other day (from 1994) and had forgotten that Beth turns up on that!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost: Bloody Hell, "Not Over Yet" was Rob Davies as well? I keep finding more reasons to forgive him for "Toca's Miracle".

B-sides to "Some Might Say" were Talk Tonight/Acquiesce/Headshrinker, two of which have to count as highly as the A-side; this was their great period for B-sides.

I need to re-visit that Brownstone single; I had quite a lot of time for them back then, but can't altogether remember why.

As for this week's Top 40, I could sing 19 of them to you now from memory. It's actually not a bad chart at all; there are 16 that I wouldn't kick out of bed.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

1 Take That Back For Good

Not their worst, although their new "adult contemporary" approach wasn't all that interesting either.

2 Outhere Brothers Don't Stop (Wiggle Wiggle)

Extremely annoying.

3 Oasis Some Might Say

This is when I really started to take notice. Hadn't been that much into the "Definitely Maybe" album, but this was a strong song indeed, and a deserved chart topper. The guitar amp sound is still annoying though.

4 Bobby Brown Two Can Play That Game

The remix worked out quite nicely, but I don't like the very idea of remixes.

5 Boyzone Key To My Life

They did some decent stuff later, but early Boyzone was way too sugar coated to be any fun.

6 Tina Arena Chains

Not familiar with this one.

7 Bryan Adams Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?

Spanish instruments and everything, to illustrate the song being from "Don Quijote". Among his more decent 90s moments.

8 MN8 If You Only Let Me In

Horrible song from a horrible act.

9 Brownstone If You Love Me
10 Let Loose Best In Me

Not familiar with any of these, I think.

11 (MC Sar And) The Real McCoy Love And Devotion

Knew some of their earlier stuff, and the cheesy 90s Eurodance certainly didn't appeal to me.

12 Corona Baby Baby

This is a bit more fun, with obvious influence from Italo disco, but this was not their best moment.

13 Love City Groove Love City Groove

I have always thought that Eurovision has needed a kick in the ass to become more musically recent and relevant, and from that point of view this was an interesting change. Whether it worked or not, I'll leave that up to those who do actually like rap.

14 Paul Weller The Changingman

With a few exceptions, I never quite liked his solo stuff. Weller made some excellent music with The Jam, but already with Style Council, he was a bit stuck with these soul influenced that just didn't fit him. "Wild Wood" was great, but this one is just boring and way too bluesy.

16 Strike U Sure Do

Another case of extremely annoying noise.

19 Bjork Army Of Me

One of my favourite songs by her. Some interesting harmonic stuff going on.

21 Weezer Buddy Holly

Trying to get into Weezer on several occasions, but this is the only song I am able to like by them. Still great stuff though.

22 Portishead Sour Times

Their best single IMO. I wasn't that much into them, but this is where they really managed to be what they were aiming at being.

23 Joshua Kadison Jessie

This was a hit in Norway two years earlier, and it was just as boring back then.

24 Bucketheads The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind)

A lot of these extremely annoying dance tunes during the first half of 1995.

26 Snap! featuring Summer The First, The Last Eternity

I kind of liked Snap better after they got rid of the annoying Turbo B. This isn't their worst moment by any means.

30 Stone Roses Fools Gold '95

I don't even think I've heard this version, I mean, I suppose it was a remix, right?

37 Wet Wet Wet Julia Says

A followup to their biggest hit, and a lot better. I consider this Wet Wet's best moment ever. Actually a great classic ballad, and the closest they ever got to greatness.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Strike - U Sure Do

I've just worked out what this is. It takes the chorus from 'Serious' by Donna Allen, which I'd bought as a teenager (in 87? 86?). Even in 1995 I felt like a bit of an old man wandering around going 'I remember this the first time around', and I was only 21.

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"1 Thing" had better go straight in at number one when it's released here (23 May) or there's gonna be trouble, I'm telling you. That's the most amazing pop record I've heard this year. Looking forward to hearing the album as well.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Number of singles in the April 1985 Top 40 that I would give four or five stars to: 8.
April 1995: 12.
April 2005: 15.

Conclusion: pop music just keeps getting better and better!

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Just like the economy, eh?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

1, 2, 3, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 19, 21, 22, 24, 26, 29, 32, 34, 40. I like all of these. "Red Light Special" is TLC's most underrated single.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Not Over Yet" was Rob Davies as well?

The man is one of my unknown heroes!

Strike fans, you must search 'Inspiration' without fail.
