Has to be said - not nearly as bad as I expected; indeed a fairly classic chart in terms of dance music. I'm not sure about the rest of it though.

Right, I can sing snippets of all of those,

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:46 (twenty years ago)

I will FIGHT anyone who says number 4 isn't the best.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

40,39,32,27,26,25,22,19,11,4,and 1 are wonderful records.

6 and 7 would be pushing for a place in my all-time top 50 singles.

The Duane Eddy record is frighteningly bad.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

and I bought nine of them (mostly from the 30p box weeks later)

Wigan's Ovation!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure that "Hurt So Good" was Lee Perry's biggest British hit as producer, or at least as big as "Return To Django." Such a deceptively weird record. Its parent album was reissued on CD about a year back and is also warmly recommended.

Wigan's Ovation! With Tommy Boyd on vocals!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

At least he looked like his stunt double. White jumper with red star in the middle. Difficult to forget.

Note the conception of New Pop at #24.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

"Life Is A Minestrone"- 10CC's worst single, surely?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

Never heard "Dreadlock Holiday" then?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

TS: Being annoying vs being offensive

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

Lee Perry 'meets' Pete Waterman. (Hurt so Good, I mean, obv)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

Having just peeked at the chart of exactly four decades ago, it blows the other three out of the water. Ticket To Ride no. 1, Petula Clark I Know A Place, The Who I Can't Explain, Françoise hardy, Martha & The Vandellas, Bob Dylan, etc etc etc

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

I think that's a legacy of all those 'yesteryear' programmes that Radio 1 used to do (JimSav, SimBates) and a general oldies OK policy until they stopped all that, mid 1990s or so.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

Now then now then Dignified Don what was at like number Thirty Four in 1965 you see God rest my soul it's the one-and-own-ly Ronnie Hilton geezer groovy guy geezer and you got like five points if you said it was Windmill In Old Amsterdam Open Brackets Vocal Close Brackets you see howzabout that then?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I remember Jim Sav playing "no one is innocent" as a matter of course on his prog...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Ah but he always drew the line at playing Judge Dread records. This record is like very rude you see and they decided To. Ban. It. And I SEENOREEASON why I should play things to offend the nice ladees and gen. Tle. Men. Listening to this here double top ten show you see Graham Archive.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

My clap-o-meter says: 19 four or five star singles in this top 40.

Therefore:
1. 1975.
2. 2005.
3. 1995.
4. 1985.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

The clapometer was responsible for the #20 entry above, and the #21 entry in the 1976 chart.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

Out of all those records, the one that my parents own is... #17.

(though thinking about it they may have #4 too)
