Or am I the only person to be familiar with them?

I think the popular contemporary Scottish group Franz Ferdinand might have more than a passing acquaintance with their oeuvre.

The Scars

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Well, slap my thigh and call me a newbie.

the chord structure of 'All About You' makes me think of 'Creep'

Mippy (Mippy), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

or should that be the other way round.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I was just listening to "Everywhere I Go". Are we talking about those Scars?

Definitely fun stuff.

I picked up their album secondhand many moons ago and always had to watch out for the needle on the first track as a chunk of vinyl was missing along the run in groov. Always brought an edge to playing the record as I had visions of my needle being ripped off in the process. Would love to hear that stuff again.

They were not mentioned at all last night.

:(

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 28 April 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

Not certain their impact would have merited a mention.

tolstoy (tolstoy), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

One of their songs was sampled by Lemon Jelly (oh the indigity) and the Scars briefly reformed to play the song live with them. Read all about it in Is This Music?, Scotland's independent music mag!

God yeah I heard that somewhere and nearly fell over frothing at the sheer randomness, it's Horrorshow they sample innit?

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

yes, it's 'horrorshow'. also, paul research, the scars guitarist has started performing and recording again.

I remember reading the review of 64-95 in the Guardian with Lovely Alex Petridis:

The blizzard of guitar noise on '79 (The Shouty Track) makes the Scars, a post-punk band of little consequence, sound like the most thrilling thing out.

Mippy (Mippy), Friday, 29 April 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

Gosh yes, what a thrilling sentence, you can see why that stands out can't you. Next up: "The 5638 from Littlehampton to Woking On The Mersey's twin guage is a revelation in rolling stock history".

Keith mentiond he saw Paul Research play a while back, I don't think Keith was impressed. Didn't Keith also say he went to school with one of the Scars? It's incestous in foreign Scotchland isn't it? I'm glad I was only BORN there else I'd no doubt be in Frank Ferguson by now instead of being in my crappy London office job, oh hold on.

I wish Sandy Blair would contribute more about the Scars.

mr. research live was mighty fine. that guitar sound.....!!!!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
The Author! Author! album is out, it has all the PRE 45 a and b sides and the extra cassette only tracks (but not the Fast records tracks).

It sounds perfect.

Strangely, I can't actually remember why I was slightly dissapointed with it when it came out.

Well ,I remember why - what I mean is I can't hear why now. The band were moving from the glam-punk to smoother new pop a good bit ahead of the curve and nobody much was going to be ready for this stuff for a year or two after this came out.

Funnily enough the re-release is probably too late for the post-punk revival too, timing never was the bands strong point.

It'll be curious if the release gains much attention, not seen any reviews browsing around the net but I'm pretty keen to see what folks make of it - the recent Josef K re-issue seemed to get a lot of covereage, but this seems much more interesting, certainly fresher sounding because its chock full of ideas not yet re0cycled to death.

Yo Sandy... Yeah, I saw that in Avalanche the other day.

I haven't seen it anywhere else... I was kind of assuming Mr.Research just wandered around the shops giving it to people.

WANT SO BAD

Andy K, Sunday, 25 February 2007 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

i recently found the Adultery/Horrorshow 7" on Fast Product at Amoeba (SF) for $10. usually i won't spend more than a few bucks on that format, but it's a really fantastic record. in light of their later, new romantic style releases, i'd have to say it's their best effort. but maybe that's just me.

stirmonster, Monday, 26 February 2007 04:08 (nineteen years ago)

I'm happy to hear this is out. And Octigan, I think you lucked out with that there 7". Now send it to me, thanks.
