Who knew PFM was so "down with the mixtape scene"

Trainspotter's Guide, Entry #3,433

One Night in Bangkok

Conductor: Shadow, DJ (née Joshua Davis of Hayward, California)

History: Origins indeterminable. Distribution through non-label channels signifies bootleg/mixtape status; cut'n'paste sleeve design implies minimal art budget. Recording date unknown (see below).

Content: Exceedingly diverse beat science, technically flawless mixology. Bifurcations include classic hip-hop, r&b, electro, future breaks, future jazz, psych-jazz, classic jazz, funk, crunk, broken beat, boogaloo, etc. And Sun Ra.

Characteristics: Continuous, hour-long set to maximize bounce (booty-swerve factor > 7.7 wpm). Surprising return to early, free-style form for iconic auteur?

i won't even go into all the reasons this is wrong. just wanted to be the first to publicly laugh at and ridicule them for actually running this review

Distribution through non-label channels signifies crush tape status; cut'n'paste sleeve design implies desperate art student. Recording date one lovesick evening in 1998.

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

Didn't we already have the weekly Pitchfork thread yesterday?

save the robot (save the robot), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

"weekly"

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

hey dahlen,

seriously, don't you guys have editors anymore?
that mix isn't even half dj shadow
what the fuck are you guys thinking?
does anyone at your site even fact check anymore?

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

I dunno. I'll drop something in Ryan's suggestion box though.

save the robot (save the robot), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

rents, re: factchecking, the writer talked to quannum and shadow's manager. (I think it's pretty obvious that if we trying to be 'down with the mixtape scene' we'd do a little more than review aim high 2 and various mop and southern smoke, etc., etc., mixtape tracks.)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

so wait, you're saying shadow's manager gave shadow credit for a mix that he didn't half do?

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

uh, the cover says it's dj shadow?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

well that certainly clenches it

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Why don't you TELL us the name of the movie?

Cosmo K. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm saying they were contacted about the origin of the mix and that concern was never expressed. There were concerns about ppl buying this as a bootleg. I have a lot of sympathy for their position because it's a bootleg rather than a proper mixtape but we also aren't limiting our reviews to official releases. (e.g. we review mixtape tracks, leaked tracks, live mp3 in the tracks section from time to time - lots of which aren't artist-controlled releases.)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Only roughly 19/20 minutes of that is DJ Shadow (rest is PC of DJ Food, it's a Solid Steel set) and it's been up for years on solesides.com for free (in realaudio)

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

this is being sold at fnac, tower, insound, etc., and we've had back'n'forth with his ppl about it which never mentioned anything like that- the concern is that it's unofficial

scott pl. (scott pl.), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

not to be a dick, but your point is...?
i mean i've bought plenty of bad bootlegged shit at major chains before
jsut depends on whose buying for them and how much leverage they have

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Basic question. How *should* someone like PFM "fact-check" a bootleg mixtape?

I'd like to see good bootlegs reviewed. But their origin is often pretty obscure, and it's inevitable that there'll have to be some trust of someone down the line. How far should fact-checking suspicion?

phil jones (interstar), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

OH LET A PLAYER PLAY

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Pitchfork is fun...Stop getting your panties in a wad

Jabberwocky (Jabberwocky), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

How *should* someone like PFM "fact-check" a bootleg mixtape?

if the origins are questionable, review the mixtape, don't go on about attributing certain aspects of it to an artist - especially if it's "so out of character" for an artist who may not have mixed it in the first place

i mean half of why mixtapes are dubious in the first place is because people can put anything they want on them and don't have it stuck with their name.

but i mean this has been pretty common knowledge since that mix "leaked", so it's hard to believe PFM actually did much in the way of even asking around internet peers in the way of research. but i won't doubt scott, he's a good guy. just hard to believe shadow's mgr didn't even say antyhing at all when PFM said they were reviewing it

x-post
my panties aren't in any wads, jabber
just kinda feel embarassed for them is all

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

letters to the ed. are usually a good idea if you feel embarassed for a glitch and want to let them change or acknowledge it asap.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

it's easier to do it here, since i know most of them read this before ryan would check the mailbag

it worked yesterday

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

I was momentarily excited that Insound is down with the mixtape scene, until I clicked on the "Buy it from Insound" link:

"Your search for "dj shadowf" produced 0 results(s):"

hoo noo (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

ouch

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

god honestly who cares?

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

WAHEY

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

rentboy, are you an actual rent boy? What do you cost? What do you look like? how old are you? are you in fact a boy at all?

fact checkin cuz (Drew Daniel), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

no, too much, hott, old enuf, yes

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

what dizzle said. this is so trivial it's embarrassing.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

rentboy, I would define "boy" as 19 or under. Are you 19 or under? If not, you go directly to "bitter old queen" status (sorry if that is unfair but the gay scene is a bitch that way).

the verificationist (Drew Daniel), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

did you even read the review?
if this is trivial, then i guess reviewing mixes at all is trivial.
it was done by two people, it's two separate mixes
it doesn't draw any parallels between crunk and jazz
it doesn't show shadow going back to his minimal free jazz roots or what the fuck ever
i mean the whole review is basically a load of horseshit in light of this fact
but i guess that's trivial too

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

no, this is trivial:

just wanted to be the first to publicly laugh at and ridicule them for actually running this review

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

so be it

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

it is done.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

if this is trivial, then i guess reviewing mixes at all is trivial.

yeah it pretty much is

Yejoon (Yejoon), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

There's a mixtape scene?
