What's yer fave and least fave cameo by a rock'n'roller (or pop star) in a film?

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My favourite is TAD's cameo in Singles. Whatta man

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

George Harrison gets in a pretty calm one-liner in Life of Brian, as well a slightly lengthier bit in The Rutles.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oooh! I forgot about Elvis Costello in 200 Cigarettes. Although he probably should have had a shave for that one.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The McDonald Brothers from Redd Kross are always showing up in those crappy Alison Anders movies. They were a Beach Boys-style surf group called the Riptides (w/ J. Mascis) in Grace of My Heart and Jeff was unrecognizable as a whiny junkie songwriter in the abominable Sugartown.

Did anyone ever see Nick Cave as "Freak Storm" (hahahahahahaha) in the Tom Dicillo movie Johnny Suede, the one with Brad Pitt? I hear he looks ridiculous.

I loved Adam Faith as Jodie Foster's groovy rock 'n' roll deadbeat dad in Foxes.

Arthur, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yo La Tengo in 'Surviving Desire'.

Lou Reed in 'Blue In The Face'.

JM, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Meatloaf in Rocky Horror Picture show, but was that before Bat Out Of Hell? Elvis Costello in Spice World was unexpected.

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nico in La Dolce Vita.

Arthur, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Yardbirds were in something. What was it?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blow Up

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

q-tip in that janet jackson movie, tricky in fifth element (i said, 'hey. that's tricky.'), krs in i'm gonna git you sucka, method man in copland and 187. also the part when snoop glides up to the steps in half baked makes me laugh.

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best is the Zen Guerilla shirt in "Ghost World" (They are from my hometown: Newark,DE) ROCK ON!

A Nairn, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

krs in i'm gonna git you sucka

Watched that again the other day and completely forgot about the fact that he pops up at the end. Couldn't forget the fish shoes, though.

Re: the McDonalds -- dear Arthur, you forgot the cameo as the wax-lip- eating types in Spirit of 76. "RODNEY SNOD-GRASS!"

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Trent Reznor in "Light of Day."

bnw, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Heh heh heh. Oh my, forgot about that one...

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But Ned, I thought the McDonald's were the stars of Spirit of '76? The cameos were provided by Devo, David Cassidy, Moon Zappa and Leif Garrett.

Stiv Bators was great in Polyester. And Kylie Minogue was a lovely Green Fairy in Moulin Rouge.

Arthur, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Desperately Seeking Susan's rock starrrrr cameos. Especially Richard Hell and Arto Lindsay. And Lurie's saxophone.
Straight to Hell with the mucho talented Courtney Love.

helenfordsdale, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fishbone in im gonna git u sucka! duh!

chaki, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

j mascis in gas, food, lodging?

gareth, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Feelies in Something Wild. I wished they'd play my high school reunion. Then again that would probably require having gone to high school in the New Jersey area (ick) which isn't a fair trade.

Alex Magid, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

remember cameo he was on topops with big red codpece. bit poofy if u ask me.

XStatic Peace, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Iggy Pop as Mr. Mecklenburg on (TV) The Adventures of Pete & Pete.

Or Iggy Pop in Dead Man. John Doe in SlamDance (Worst..movie..ever.)

Dave225, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

pete and pete wasn't a movie but had the best cameos, even michael stipe was funny. and hunter s thompson!

ethan, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe these roles were too prominent to qualify as cameos, but:
1. Meat Loaf in Fight Club
2. Joe Strummer in the highly caffeinated, aforementioned Straight To Hell

felicity, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tupac Shakur (and the entire Digital Underground) in the classic Dan Aykroyd vehicle, "Nothing But Trouble".

Both my fave and least fave cameo.

matthew d., Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom Waits in Rumblefish when he winds up his middle finger.

fritz, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not a cameo but god dang Debbie rules in Videodrome.

helenfordsdale, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Would you call the C-RAM distress center? You need help lover. You need it bad."

Sean, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rollins in Heat.

Chopped Up Man, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ewwwww.

fritz, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick Cave going absolutely bloody apeshit in a high-security prison gone mental in The Ghosts Of The Civil Dead.

Wyndham Earl, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick's part was a bit more than a cameo. Fantastic performance though, apparently unscripted. I'm bleeding...

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Or better yet..."HERE I AM, MOTHERFUCKER!!!"

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

five years pass...

jim martin in bill and ted's bogus journey

genius

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

Loudon Wainwright III in "Knocked Up"

Tom D., Wednesday, 12 December 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

I'd heard Danielle Dax had a cameo in "The Company of Wolves", so watched it very carefully, just in case it was a 'blink and you'll miss it' bit.

No need.

She basically is the whole of the last five minutes in a 'lead' part, basically.

Mark G, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

Oh I remember that! Nudge nudge, wink wink etc

Tom D., Wednesday, 12 December 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

What's that Alan Rudolph film that Neil YOung's in?

Also John Cale is in some film.

Tom D., Wednesday, 12 December 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

Carl McCoy (of the Nephs) made a fleeting cameo in some completely shitty sci-fi film -- I want to say it was called "Hardware," be wrong.

In any case:
BEST: Bauhaus opening proceedings with a live rendition of "Bela Lugosi's Dead" in "The Hunger".

WORST: Iggy Pop in "Tank Girl" -- absolute crap movie.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

Florian Fricke in "Signs of Life" and "The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser"

Tom D., Wednesday, 12 December 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, I think Joe Strummer in Jarmusch's "Mystery Train" trumps all.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

Howard Devoto in 24 Hour Party People..."I definitely don't remember this happening"...

henry s, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

I can't think of one better than Bowie as a weary bureacratic Pilate in Last Temptation of Christ, tho Bryan Ferry as a violent sex maniac in Breakfast on Pluto is close.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

Jim Jarmusch has a habit of casting musicians, doesn't he: John Lurie, Tom Waits, Rammelzee, Iggy Pop, RZA, GZA, White Stripes, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Joe Strummer... One of the three taxi customers in the Helsinki section of Night on Earth is also a well-known singer here. I think Broken Flowers is the only film of his that doesn't feature musicians.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

Zappa in "Head"

Tom D., Wednesday, 12 December 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

Another vote for the Feelies in "Something Wild."

Jazzbo, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

The Pretty Things in "What's Good for the Goose" (Norman Wisdom film)

Tom D., Wednesday, 12 December 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

Elvis Costello is great in No Surrender. I've never met a single other person who's seen this film.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

Is that the one where he's a magician? He's terrible!

Tom D., Wednesday, 12 December 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

Joanne Walley?

Mark G, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

Almost Bob Dylan terrible

Tom D., Wednesday, 12 December 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

I always thought his being terrible was deliberate. Mind, I was about 12 when I last saw it.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 12 December 2007 15:19 (eighteen years ago)

Third vote for the Feelies, and also Su Tissue (Suburban Lawns) in the same scene.

nickn, Thursday, 13 December 2007 08:01 (eighteen years ago)

It's a sad and beautiful world: the Jim Jarmusch poll.

latebloomer, Thursday, 13 December 2007 08:05 (eighteen years ago)

oh i see tuomas beat me the chase there. never mind!

latebloomer, Thursday, 13 December 2007 08:06 (eighteen years ago)

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 13 December 2007 08:12 (eighteen years ago)

xpost. 'Hardware' is correct. the first film directed by Nephs video vet Richard Stanley. and not crap. Iggy Pop also cameos as a heard-but-not-seen radio DJ.

Mr. Hal Jam, Thursday, 13 December 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

The Clash and their girlfriends in The King of Comedy.

dad a, Thursday, 13 December 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

Tom Waits is the only good part about The Two Jakes.

deusner, Thursday, 13 December 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

Yo La Tengo in 'Surviving Desire'

As someone who's seen Surviving Desire at least two dozen times, I am forced to say: wait, what??

nabisco, Thursday, 13 December 2007 16:43 (eighteen years ago)

Doesn't Lemmy play a cab driver in that? I have the VHS at home somewhere. I should dig it out.

onimo, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

That'd be The Book of Life. Unless it was supposed to be I Shot Andy Warhol.

dad a, Thursday, 13 December 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

Liam Hayes (aka Plush) in High Fidelity...

Medicine in The Crow

Pillbox, Thursday, 13 December 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

Alice Cooper in "Wayne's World"!!!

Wayne Campbell: So, do you come to Milwaukee often?
Alice Cooper: Well, I'm a regular visitor here, but Milwaukee has certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers began visiting here in the late 16th century.
Pete: Hey, isn't "Milwaukee" an Indian name?
Alice Cooper: Yes, Pete, it is. In fact , it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land."
Wayne Campbell: I was not aware of that.

marzoni, Thursday, 13 December 2007 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

Billy Idol in "The Wedding Singer" is surely classic.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 14 December 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

except that he's playing an 80s version of himself but looks really fucking old

Charlie Howard, Friday, 14 December 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

The Grateful Dead as slack-jawed gawkers watching Julie Christie getting loaded into an ambulance in Petulia.

C. Grisso/McCain, Friday, 14 December 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

doesn't Malkmus pop up as a coffee house strummer in some mid-90's Garafolo indie flick?

will, Friday, 14 December 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

Good lord was Petulia one of the worst films I've seen
