Robyn Hitchcock never fails to crack me up.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Bright Eyes!

Aaron A., Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

robyn hitchcock's live spiel >> his lyrics.

Shellac

Si Carter (Si Carter), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Every time I hear "Obstacle 2" I laugh hysterically. Possibly the worst lyrics on the first album.

Weezer's lyrics are in a similar bad-funny vein...except you just end up squirming uncomfortably because you know soooo many people who "totally relate to them."

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

well, the subway, she is a porno, duh

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

if you dont concentrate too hard on paul banks' lyrics and just listen to the melody, interpol sound a lot more excellent.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Pulp

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

re: r hitchcock's banter.

Scooter!

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

I really do NOT like listening to Barman, but that one line of his about "is it because I target the audience you wish you never had?" always kills me.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

LUDACRIS

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

I think a band like Fishbone, with song lyrics like "may your dog's colon be familiar with the warmth of your breath", deserve a special place in this thread.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

Ween, the Fall...

space2k (space2k), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Telephonething, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I have some friends who once went to a poetry reading at a local cafe and read, completely straightfaced, the lyrics to Dio's "Holy Diver," which I will transcribe here for your amusement:

Holy Diver
You've been down too long in the midnight sea
Oh what's becoming of me

Ride the tiger
You can see his stripes but you know he's clean
Oh don't you see what I mean

Gotta get away
Holy Diver

Shiny diamonds
Like the eyes of a cat in the black and blue
Something is coming for you

Race for the morning
You can hide in the sun 'till you see the light
Oh we will pray it's all right

Gotta get away-get away

Between the velvet lies
There's a truth that's hard as steel
The vision never dies
Life's a never ending wheel

Holy Diver
You're the star of the masquerade
No need to look so afraid

Jump on the tiger
You can feel his heart but you know he's mean
Some light can never be seen

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Pixies
Pet Shop Boys

Seb (Seb), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Ween X 2

"I want your cocoa puff man Nicole"

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Phish undoubtedly kept themselves from being more mainstream with their penchant for silly lyrics (Take a listen to Reba or Tube sometime, easily legally downloadable via a bit torrent client and etree.org) They covered Ween a few times, Chocolate and Cheese, mmmm :)

Jim Crichton, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Minutemen (their song titles alone are more amusing than most bands' lyrical output).

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

It also helps to have seen this photo of them from Halloween 1985, where D. Boon is done up like Beast Man from He-Man:

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

Pavement or Silver Jews.

PB, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

Minutemen (their song titles alone are more amusing than most bands' lyrical output).

"Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want the Truth?" is perhaps the greatest rock song title in the history of ever.

Cunga (Cunga), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

Intentionally: Pansy Division

Unintentionally: Maximo Park's "Graffiti" creases me up at every listen.

Ben Dot (1977), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:23 (twenty years ago)

Unintentionally Kiss:

She's a dancer/a romancer/I'm a Capricorn and she's a Cancer....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 28 April 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I mean John Prine, Ludacris, Electric Six all beautiful but Interpol just...jesus.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 28 April 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

I've only heard like two other songs in their discography but The Lexicon Of Love deserves a shout-out
