Plus three makes fifteen

Okay. So let's say your friend is one of these people with only a dozen CDs we've been talking about lately. She gets a gift certificate for any three CDs from HMV or Amazon or whatever, and calls you up: you know about music, she doesn't, and she wants you to recommend three CDs for her to buy. Any three: just things she's likely to like despite the fact that she hasn't developed any particular taste.

What do you tell her to get?

My New Answer!: Nick Drake, _Way to Blue_; Liliput, _Liliput_; Ella Fitzgerald, _The Cole Porter Songbook, vol. 1_. I realize that the Liliput's a double, but it's usually cheap.

Too little info to do a good guess, but assuming she might like pop music that's not too aggressive but not targeted at teenagers,

The 6ths - Wasps' Nests.

Barbara Manning - Sings with the Original Artists.

The Walkabouts' Satisfied Mind, the first Raincoats record, and a reasonable collection of early nineties proto-jungle tracks.

I tell her to get some Cage, Boulez and Stockhausen. Knowing full well she won't like'em, I am hoping she'll give'em to me. ;-) If that doesn't work, then I suggest Portishead's Dummy, VU&Nico and Joni Mitchell's Blue.

Mission of Burma (that Rykodisc 80 minute compilation; if that's unavailable, Vs.); Massive Attack (Mezzanine); Loud Family (Plants & Birds & Rocks & Things). MULLIGAN: Danielle Howle (Catalog).

Keith Jarrett: Köln Concert. Joni Mitchell: Hejira. Giant Sand: Chore of Enchantment. Three quite different genres. She can then decide if she wants to check out more music in any of them.

Or more likely, forget about this music thing altogether ;)

I quite like Helen's answer. Maybe substitute a Madonna for the Portishead. Or a UK 70s Hits compilation (w/plenty of disco on it) for the Joni.

Best of Brick & Brick "Superhits" and if they release another Brick album on CD, that's the third! Or maybe a Beach Boys CD.
