which brian eno proclaimed "harbinger of things to come" is your favorite?

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

I don't really like Soon (worst track on Loveless IMO,) and "I Feel Love" is like the best song ever... so I'll go with "I Feel Love."

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Both great, "Soon" probably slightly better--the mid-section of "I Feel Love" kinda bores me.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

agreed!

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

"Soon" is the greatest sound recording ever made. "I Feel Love" is nice, but not at the same level of greatness for me.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

i think "soon" sounds like a step backward from "i feel love". not that 'harbinger of things to come' means 'futuristic', exactly, but i think he had it a little righter the first time.

i mean, i do love "soon".

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

What Spencer said, though "I Feel Love" is more than nice, it's quite awesome. Can't touch the impact on me when I first head "Soon" though -- I don't think anything ever well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Closest thing we'll ever get to a fusion of the two -- Curve's "I Feel Love" cover?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Donna by a mile, and I fucking LOVE "Soon"

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

To me, "I Feel Love" still sounds like the future of music.

Eno was sorta right on about "Soon," though--that sort of meshing of the shoegaze and indie-dance sound certainly saw more than a handful of imitators, even if it wasn't the course that all music chose to follow over the course of the next decade or so.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, agreed. It was a subcultural landmark instead of a universal one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

"I Feel Love". It's great no matter which version you get (the 4 minute one, the extended 12", etc); I'm not sure "Soon" would be able to do the same.

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh, you'd be surprised, Vic...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

i dont know if "i feel love" is a universal landmark either, ned. i think a good universal landmark is "smells like teen spirit". can anyone come up with any others, post-1975? "anarchy in the uk", probably. "blitzkreig bop"?

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

And what of the Andrew Weatherill JBO remix of "Soon?" Sort of splits the difference, doesn't it?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Jeepers, Pete, you're seriously saying that "Blitzkrieg Bop" or even "Anarchy in the UK" isn't more of a 'catch the world's attention at large, listeners, musicians, the whole shebang' flashpoint *at the time of release/initial popularity* than "I Feel Love"?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

wait. no - im saying BB and AUK probably ARE more universal landmarks.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

I think Ned mixed up his negatives a bit in that post.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

ok. then yes. i am saying that. i mean, i dont really know shit, being that i was like, -8 when all that happened.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

You damned youngster. Back in time with you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

I worship Loveless and at first listen I found "Soon" amazing.....but on repeated listens it tends to bore b/c it doesn't go anywhere or tread new ground after the first 2 minutes.

Who did "I Feel Love" by the way?

PB, Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Donna Summer singing, Giorgio Moroder handling the music (with Keith Forsey's help)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

I Feel Love is great, but Soon is the best track ever.

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

but on repeated listens it tends to bore b/c it doesn't go anywhere or tread new ground after the first 2 minutes.

It's not supposed to fucking go anywhere!

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

did eno really say such things? what a brilliant man.

"i feel love" is my pick although both are sui generis examples of studio manipulation as the ultimate musical artifice. both songs are so sexual too - one hints, the other just lays it out in plain sight.

what other songs are like this?

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

did eno really say such things? what a brilliant man.

The exact "I Feel Love" story appeared in the liner notes to the original issue of Sound and Vision by Bowie. According to Bowie, he was in the studio one day with Visconti figuring something out for either Low or "Heroes" when Eno barged in with a white label or test pressing of "I Feel Love." Apparently Eno insisted on putting it on immediately and said something like, "This is it, this is going to shape the future of pop/club/whatever music for the next ten years."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

I wish "Soon" went on for as long as the Patrick Cowley extended "I Feel Love" workout (which is admittedly a stupendous track).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

I still remember everything about the day when I first heard "Soon".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

i was going to say something along the lines of "soon" = mind and "i feel love" = body, but didn't.

loveless is a bit like nostalgia incarnate in song isn't it?

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

I still remember everything about the day when I first heard "Soon".

I remember it down to the second. I remember what was written by other KLA DJs on the sleeve!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

I Feel Love by miles.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

so what im hearing is that "soon" is the sentimental pick, while "i feel love" is the correct answer.

right, guys? ned? guys? JK dudez! you know i love you AND kevin shields! and im sorta drunk.

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

What on?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 April 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

"Soon"? Now there's a great Yes single :-)

Otherwise, if you compare with MBV, it's "I Feel Love" all the way for me.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 28 April 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

drunk on beer, my friend. also elation. yes. drunk on elation.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 28 April 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)
