What's with all the hoopla about this band? Sorry, just am curious since I have seen their debut single ("Love is a Number") listed all around uk club charts and all of that. Thanks!!

The UK's answer to The Bravery (and I mean that with all the weaknesses and, gulp, strengths) but with even more New Romantic posturing, completely superficial but with two potential hits in their sets so far.

Steve Strange would be proud,

HS

I'm not sure if they are going to be massive. Yes, Love Is A Number is a great catchy song. Definitely one of my favourites at the moment. It's out next week I think. Well in the UK that is.

Nicole (StarShine), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

Is this our old friend what's her name's band? I hope they are massive.

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

I would like to see them start a north/south rivalry with Scot fops dot to dot.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

This is our old friend what's her name's band. I remain unconvinced.

harvey.w (harvey.w), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:00 (twenty years ago)

Yes, they should have a fop-off.

I'm very, very, very excited. Unconvinced, but excited.

Why, only yesterday I was thinking about Dot to Dot.

But I can't remember what.

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Is she not, like, in her mid-forties by now?

Peter Stringbender (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Nah. She was only about 12 back then, wasn't she?

This band is decent, but they're no New Rhodes!

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Monday, 29 August 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

"Love Is a Number" is very possibly my single of the year so far. Pfork track review pending...

Don't forget the Blackstrobe remix.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 29 August 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Okay, after listening to this again on a walk this morning, I was probably too dismissive of these guys. I'm still not sold on "Love Is A Number" since it sounds a LOT like a dry run for Bloc Party's "Two More Years", but "Girls In The Back" is an *awesome* example of Epworth's suddenly-bringing-new-elements-into-a-basic-song schtick (see also Maximo Park's "Just A Glimpse").

The Bravery comparison upthread seems dangerously OTM, although since they're British and I'm American I'll probably be spared from the oncoming Katrina of hype and disspiriting interviews.

Also I am man enough to admit that Pitchfork freaking out over something is usually enough to get me to give it another shot.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

They remind me of Flock of Seagulls. In a good way.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Also: Erica, you need to have a word with that video director.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

They sound like the horticultural arm of C0mb4t-18. Erica Mac to establish fragrant fascist state by 2015!

I'm hoping for an underground car park buzzsaw-synth, eyeliner-pencil sticking out of an Arran sweater kind of vibe, except without using the word "vibe". Will I be disappointed?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 29 August 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

I need to have a word with that video director? could you
mean.....the....shots of my......um....

I gave my permission.

Erica, Sunday, 4 September 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Is their name meant to make them sound like a Combat 18 offshoot?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 4 September 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit, I didn't even read the message two posts up. Well, WRM: the people have spoken. Change your name, lest you be mistook for mosque-burners.

Every song I hear from this band makes me convinced that their album is going to be Paul Epworth's Lexicon of Love. I'm really worried about hyping myself up too much for this band after having seen pretty much every nu-Britpop album turn out to be disposable after a while, but I CANNOT STOP LISTENING TO THESE GODDAMN SONGS.

Also: the Phones remix of "Alsatian" is fucking AWWWWWWWWWESOME.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

So, this is like the new Junior Senior Interpol Fast Fleeting Flashback? Boring.

I AM OTM, Wednesday, 16 November 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

They put on a top show live. All the recordings annoy me, except love is a number radio edit.

Laney (Laneyje), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

black strobe rmx of 'love is a number' is such a monster

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 16 November 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

If The Killers sounded like this, then maybe all the Duran Duran comparisons would make sense to me.

I know many, many bands are following the same sound and as a rule I get tired of it pretty quick. So it makes no sense that I’m liking Kick as much as I do. This record really sounds like it should have been released in the 80’s and is my most played record of this new year so far.
