Sonny Sharrock tracks that feature Linda. Lots of Diamanda Galas. Lots of Yoko Ono.

Curious George (1/6 Scale Model) (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 28 April 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm...I've already got some Sonny and Linda stuff over here. That's a fine idea.

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

I think "Rock Music" by the Pixies is supposed to have lyrics, but I was surprised and disappointed when I found that out. Always considered it as a primeaval almost language and think it would be all the better for it.

Ben Dot (1977), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Cocteau Twins totally have proper words and well-formed sentences and stuff, though?

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

I would say "Thank you, and I love you all, especially Matthew who has gone to the trouble to send some wonderful mp3s" but it would seem counter to the spirit of the thread, so...

Bah um! Wuh ib vundja ee ladrim. kuuvel beb.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

That song that came second in Eurovision two years ago... the Belgian entry... the whole thing was in a made-up language... gah, what was it called...

Ah, here we are. "Sanomi" by Urban Trad.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

I dunno how I feel about invented languages like khobian and hopelandic and stuff being included here. On the one hand, they don't sound very different from scat and they aren't anyone's NATIVE language. On the other, they are allegedly saying things and communicating ideas in their own made-up way. I think I'm leaning toward the idea that Magma, Sigur Ros and their kin shouldn't count.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 28 April 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

I didn't say stop!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Rahsaan Roland Kirk and Mingus grunted a lot.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

Many songs by Eek-A-Mouse, although most feature an equal measure of gibberish and actual lyrics. His gibberish is golden, though.

A good deal of Seefeel tracks seem to fit the bill

How about Rahzel "instrumental" tracks?

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

Rahzel is an interesting one - I've been looking around for beatbox-heavy tracks that don't actually have any words (I'm being all puristy and shit here, I know) but haven't tracked down any yet.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

I think Andy Partridge's "The Forgotten Language of Light" may be my favourite track of this sort--and a real hidden/lost gem. Makes seeking out the "XTC" 'Explode Together' disc (which is admittedly footnotish, generally) well worth it. Takes the 'Drums & Wires' concept fairly literally, stripping down in a way that comes off like 'Flowers of Romance' but with total joy replacing the menace. Plus it's just a great build and release. Really sounds like "language," too, in a bizarre way.

I.M. (I.M.), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

Sounds great. I totally wanna hear that.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

Try searching for it under XTC, not Partridge---probably more likely to find it through the 'Explode' comp than someone ripping the original EP.

And you know, I'm listening to the comp right now--and it's actually a lot more interesting than I remembered. Some genuinely interesting soundscapes, some moments fairly beautiful, like "The Day They Pulled the North Pole Down" (which sounds loosely culled from "Mechanic Dancing" (and not much ripping off pure dub).

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

You can email songs?

I'll try it.

I.M. (I.M.), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

just attach it as an mp3. It's totally sweet.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

Actually, "Telstar" would fit this description.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

Well-Done Wordless Vocals
Best wordless chorus (aside from a Cocteau Twins record)?

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

hahahaha! I love it where he records the song with no lyrics OR music and the kids go nuts when it's on the radio, complete with the parents shouting at them to turn that shit off.
