The song I'm trying to ID is probably from the late '70s. The tempo is moderately fast, with an insistent feel not unlike the "Woke up, got out of bed" section of The Beatles' "A Day in the Life" -- but more jazz-inflected: I think it's got a horn section on the track. The song is a duet sung by a man and a woman, the latter of whom has a nice, smooth alto voice. I can only remember one clear phrase from the melody/lyrics, which is sung by the female vocalist and goes something like this:

(There's a MIDI file of this available on my site.)
I believe this melody recurs at least twice, and shows up at the beginning of what one might call a "pre-chorus" -- i.e. after the end of the verse, but before the actual chorus.
I don't remember how the verse goes, but the chorus starts out in G, I think, and might start out with a line about people standing around -- "these people stand", or something like that.
Other thoughts: (lazy) adjectives that might apply to this song -- "urbane", "laid-back", "upbeat", "jazzy". It feels like the kind of music that might get played during a movie sequence in which the characters are enjoying a lavish night out in the theaters and restaurants of NYC, circa 1978 or so. The chord changes -- in particular, the modulations -- are more adventurous than your usual pop song.
A friend of mine suggested the female vocalist might be Karen Carpenter; she's definitely in the right ballpark. From what I remember, the male vocalist has a fairly light, smooth sound. (The vocalists could be jazz singers with a crossover hit.)
This song is enough of an oldies-radio staple that I've heard it twice over the past decade or so -- but is uncommon enough that I've *only* heard it twice. And it's been bugging the hell out of me since hearing it again, towards the end of 2003.
So...anyone know it?

Nice one!! Judging by the 30-second clip on Amazon (and a MIDI file I just found), yep, you nailed it. (Funny that it turns out to be "KNOW WHERE to go" -- that's what was throwing off my Google attempt.)
Thank you very much!
