i dont know why , even in country i prefer banjo or mandolin or lapsteel . i dont like most rock at all . i dont want to be a contraian but i do not like guitars .

anthonyeaston, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i don't know much about rock history but from what i understand it seemed like there was a point where the singular instrument of this new 'rock and roll' could've been either the piano or the electric guitar and somehow it became the awful bastard latter, new wave tried to fix this but it was too late.

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh god. Spare me, will ya? Who gives a fuck what it's played on if the tune is good. Jesus. I thought this board was trying to get away from snobbery.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this board needs to get away from posts about what this board should be like. ("'i love music'? more like i DISSECT music and RUIN it HA HA!")

ethan, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I feel the same way about drums. All my favorite cds have drums low in the mix, or not there at all. But I love tablas!

A Nairn, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fine.

I hate saxophones. Except for Lisa Simpson.

electric sound of jim, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lisa Simpson's all right if you like saxophones. *is showered in a hail of trash and blunt objects, retires hastily*

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now, Anthony, is it the sound of a guitar (acoustic or electric?) you don't like? Or specific uses they're put to?

Josh, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think its how its used . i like some folk that uses acoustic , i am not sure why .

anthonyeaston, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Electric Jim: to put it another way, "who gives a fuck about the tune if the music sounds crap?"

Now I don't have a problem with guitars, but nor do I have a problem with Anthony's dislike of them. It's surely no different to disliking, say, steel drums, which a lot of people hate. And I really, really don't see how Anthony's position is snobbish, considering how widely reviled the banjo and mandolin are.

Tim, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like steel drums. And pianos rule.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the acoustic guitar is the instrument I most often dislike but I like enough of it to not say I hate it.

Tom, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I hate the bass guitar. I mean, when you can actually hear it too much or when it's doing something particularly fancy.

Ronan, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anthony, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think a ruler off the edge of a desk is a much underused instrument.

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

anthony, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Acoustic gtrs OK, what I really can't see the point of is electric gtrs on 'clean' settings. I mean, WHY!!!? It's like buying an anti- aircraft gun to shoot cans with.

dave q, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My new theory: What's wrong with guitars is the way you look when you play them. The act of sweeping your hand across the strings inevitably leads to a dominant hackneyed musical style that corresponds to the dynamic visual gesture. If guitar gods looked like accordionists, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Curt, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Loved Q's post:

"It's like buying an anti- aircraft gun to shoot cans with."

- whereas you use *your* anti-aircraft gun for...?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...the people drinking out of the cans?

dave q, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

GUITARS RULE OK.

I like banjos and mandolins a-okay too. I can't say that I understand an active dislike of guitars, but I guess I can respect that. I used to know a guy who absolutely couldn't stand female voices, just because he didn't like the timbre. I could respect that viewpoint a lot less than this one, I guess.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Efficiency, man, efficiency. Sometimes you just want a clean tone without having to blow a wad of cash on an acoustic which will be a lot harder to record properly. Of course, you could make the argument that a clean electric sound has a much different character than an acoustic, and has its place in certain songs.

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well maybe b/c a clean electric tone is completely different sounding from an acoustic tone? Distortion is like so 90's maaaaan.

Clarke B., Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tim is OTM re "who gives a fuck about the tune". For nice sounding guitar see Jimmy Nolan. I don't much like a lot of the rest and I PLAY the damn guitar.

Keiko, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The acoustic guitar has an entirely different sound than the clean electric guitar. It has a large hollow body that the sound goes in.

A Nairn, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not following the point of this discussion at all.

electric sound of jim, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Guitars rule, as do Drums. I like the Turntable as an instrument. I think the Alto sax is really stupid though. actually most horns turn me off.

Fidel, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"guitarz is rockanroll ONLY music there is cant do on stilofone can u? "

well, YES. frankly. Suicide with a stylophone would have rocked just as fucking hard as Slayer.

Wyndham Earl, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i work in a guitar shop for a living and they do bring out the worst in people. they should redesign them so they're more difficult to play or so you can't do tunes on them. i gave it up for the swanee whistle & a jaws harp. (that's a lie but i wish i had - i feel so tarred with the brush of mediocrity) banjo is great.

bob snoom, Friday, 25 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

actually most horns turn me off. Inzeeresting.
