Perhaps we can discuss albums with one great side and one stinky side

The first Roxy Music album inspired this thread. Side 1 is nearly flawless up through 2HB. Then on Side 2 we're subjected to the likes of Bob (Medley) and Sea Breezes.

Which side of Low do you guys like?

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

the one that doesn't suck.

Bugger! I was just going to say that!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

I would never refer to side two as "stinky" per se, but the first side of Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are Devo! is significantly better than the second side.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Actually, after all I'd heard, when I got to hear "Revelations" I thought, "It's not that terrible..."

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

Synchronicity, good one. The first half of Republic is ridiculously better than the second half.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

Abbey Road

although i disagree, i wanted to be the first to say it.

Metal Machine Music

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

all the Temptations mid-70s albums that are split between funk sides and ballad sides.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

i don't think i want to know which side of "hounds of love" is the bad one.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Sly & the Family Stone, Stand! -- first side is dramatically better

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

"Revelations" only sucks when compared to the incredible first side. Same deal with Low.

Plastic Ono Band, Live Peace In Toronto. First side blows. Second side kicks ass.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 28 April 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

"Actually, after all I'd heard, when I got to hear "Revelations" I thought, "It's not that terrible...""

How did you feel by the time you were halfway through it 'though?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 28 April 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Huh, I was going to post Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band. Side One is so much better than Side Two (sorry Ornette).

Prefab Sprout's "Two Wheels Good."

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Thursday, 28 April 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Billy Joel's "Glass Houses" and "An Innocent Man" are far inferior on the flip. Styx "Cornerstone" also comes to mind.

Talking Heads - Fear Of Music

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 28 April 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

surely you jest, Hari.

erklie, Thursday, 28 April 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm starting to feel this way about "Waiting For the Siren's Call."
The second side of Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend" is miles duller than the first.

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Thursday, 28 April 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

You right about Girlfriend

Prefab Sprout's "Two Wheels Good."
We might as well invent an emoticon that means "edd s hurt OTM."

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Both sides of "Low" are of course great.

The best example here is ELP's "Love Beach" album. Side 1 is absolutely awful on the verge of unlistenable, while side 2 consists of the great "Memoirs Of An Officer And a Gentleman", the last great thing they ever did.

"The Joshua Tree" has one side that is considerably stronger than the other. I wouldn't call side 2 a "stinker" though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

i only really listen to side B of 'fear of music'!

then again i never seem to have much time to listen to my vinyls so that could be why.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

haha i guessed it would be side A. I really like Mind -> Paper -> Cities as a trio on side a.

erklie, Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Lou Reed "New York"

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

The first disc of Saturday Night Fever.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Sure, "Saturday Fever" OTM. Side One is like the Bee Gees' Greatest disco hit, with a couple of other recent (Bee Gees sounding) hit singles added. Side two is crowded with instrumentals and basically a lot of filler (even though there is "Disco Inferno" in the end)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

I like all of Fear Of Music, but the first half is my favorite.

My first thought upon seeing this thread was Talking Head's "Remain In Light". I always find Seen and Not Seen, Listening Wind, and Overload to really drag. Not horrible, but not my favorite thing.

joygoat (joygoat), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

I don't think they're stinky by any means, but The Chameleons' Strange Times and The Missing Brazilians' Warzone both have impeccable Side A's that their Side B's can't match up to.

Ian Riese-Moraine has a grenade, that pineapple's not just a toy! (Eastern Mantr, Friday, 29 April 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Fear of Music has no truly stinky side. Besides, we now know it's ILM's 133th favouritest record of that decade, so there can't possibly much flab. Or something. I can't even agree with the Roxy Music and Devo debuts. Does this mean I'm not discerning enough?

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

Wtf? Two Wheels Good? But that's Steve McQueen isn't it?!?

Which side are you describing as "stinky"? The one with "Faron Young", "Appetite" and "When Love Breaks Down" or the one with "Horsin' Arond", "Desire As" and "When The Angels"?

I ask merely for information of course - 'cos I think you're both quite clearly totally completely and utterly indefensibly wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong either way!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 29 April 2005 07:35 (twenty years ago)

Certainly disagree with "Steve McQueen" ("Two Wheels Good") as well.
