glam rock 101?

A friend of a friend is working on an academic paper, something about contemporary Spanish literature. Anyway, there's apparently a glam rock theme coursing through whatever he's been reading, and my friend forwarded him on to me for help. And yet - I'm blanking on what would be most helpful! Here's his email:

Any ideas?

That's a very short e-mail. Could your friend perhaps be a little more specific?

Huh, don't know why that email didn't paste. I'll try again. Anyway, *here's* his email:

My knowledge of the
genre is limited. I also see that there is an abundance of
information. Today I am reading Bowie bios by Buckley and
Christopher Sandford. A couple others will arrive shortly.
Can you recommend a good book/article, scholarly or
otherwise, that overviews the glam period--a good
"starter" text that places the music into a social
context? I will probably ask you about specific details as
they arise.

Where does one find critical explanations of songs? Do
these even exist? I am particularly interested in what
people have said about "Heroes."
