Is Stereo Total still the best pop group in the world?

To me they really were a couple of years ago. Anyway, yesterday I was listening to a compilation I made with only songs in German, and I realised that I still can't think of a more exiting pop band making music right now. Who do I need to listen to?

Unfortunately, I have to answer no, given how poor their last album is...

Well, it has a few good songs doesn't it? Like "Orange Mecanique" and "Europa Neurotisch".

yeah, there are some good songs, but overall this new album is a slight disappointment for me.

What are people's favorite Stereo Total albums, anyway? I put the first one I heard, a 1998 (US-only compilation I believe) called *Stereo Total* on Bobsled Records, in my top ten the year it came out, so I guess that's *my* favorite. But I've probably heard five or six (from later and earlier) since, and they've all been okay, with a couple really great tracks and very few horrible ones. So I'm sort of overwhelmed by now. They seem really consistent, if nothing else.

The "still" is what gets me.

OK come on, I didn't really mean it seriously, although I'm only half joking. So honestly, what pop group from the last few years is more creative, talented and exciting than Stereo Total? Why?

daavid (daavid), Thursday, 28 April 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, dudes, they've been the best pop group in the world at least six different times, once for about forty-five seconds while playing at the Empty Bottle in Chicago (I was there), and then once for like nearly a minutes while I was walking in Midtown listening to "Supergirl." Plus once when I put Monokini at Kim's and this eight-year-old was going nuts dancing next to the Criterion DVDS. Plus some other times I can't remember. If they had put "Hungry!" first on the new one then they'd have reclaimed it through those first five seconds of the first listen, but they didn't, so ... no, they haven't gotten any of those best-thing-ever moments for quite some time now.

one year passes...
stereo total totally stereo-suck. hearing one song of them is like a joke you are amused by. but you don“t want to hear the same joke again. but thats all they do - recycle one idea.

But what a good idea it is!
