I tuned out after Illmatic. Suddenly, inexplicably curious again. So, alright, without further ado, then, please, a Post-Illmatic Nas P0X, OK?

I'm kinda tempted to list "Book of Rhymes" from The Lost Tapes -- the song where he kicks a bunch of half thought out lyrics. I especially like how he discards "Gandhi was a fool, nigga fight to the death" but then ends up using the first part of it in "Revolutionary Warfare" on God's Son.

Randy Reiss (undeadsinatra), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"Book of Rhymes" is on God's Son, isn't it? I like how loose and uncharacteristic that song is, it kinda cracks me up. especially his Yoda-like diction, "behind the ears wet".

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't stand "If I Ruled the World," just grates. Hokey. Otherwise, i like Al's list but I'm still a sucker for "Nas Is Like" and "NY State of Mind pt 2"

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and "You Won't See Me Tonight"!

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

> made you look (esp the remix w luda and jada)

I clicked just to say this, but seeing as Jermaine and SC beat me to it, I'll recommend the lead single from the new one "Bridging The Gap" but keep in mind I'm a dead sucker for New Orleans style drumming. Also, his guest appearance on Large Professor's "Stay Chisel."

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

haha what about I Can?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 29 April 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I would get God's Son and see if you're still taken. For my money, it's a solid album.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

the "ny state of mind pt. III" with Rakim and Alicia Keys is pretty dope too. Also the new single from Lost Tapes 2.

burna, Friday, 29 April 2005 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

roger, check out his second album. it's really pretty good actually.

Amon (eman), Friday, 29 April 2005 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I just checked out It Was Written pretty recently and I think it might be my favorite Nas album. I mean, Illmatic era but more pop (but not further down the road doing bad songs with Timbaland, etc.). I was put off by "If I Ruled The World" for a long time but now I really like it.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 29 April 2005 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, me personally I listen to Illmatic all the time, but never It Was Written. Or I Am. Or Nastradamus. Or really, anything until God's Son. (I missed Stillmatic entirely)

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 29 April 2005 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, you should totally check out Stillmatic and God's Son, they're both better than Illmatic. And the new one is quite good too. But yeah, here's my POX:

If I Ruled the World
Dance
What Goes Around
One Mic
Get Down
Warrior Song
Just a Moment (feat. Quan)
American Way (feat. Kelis)
2nd Childhood
AZ feat. Nas: "The Essence"

(The last one can be found on AZ's LP Aziatic, and it's one of the best things both he and Nas have ever done.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 29 April 2005 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

(That comment was meant for Roger.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 29 April 2005 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

nofrontin, Friday, 29 April 2005 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Urgh I know everyone's sick of comparing them to Illmatic but I just don't see what's so great about Stillmatic or God's Son as albums, independent of any comparisons to mid 90s nyc touchstones. For every "Made U Look" there's a "Zone Out," if you get what I'm saying. Frankly I'm a total popist when it comes to Nas material post-illmatic, he's got so much great stuff but none of the albums really captured anything close enough to consistency for me.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Friday, 29 April 2005 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, come on, "Zone Out" is the *only* weak track on God's Son. As for me, I think the beats on both Stillmatic and God's Son are better than on Illmatic. Illmatic has solid beats, but they sound like every other early nineties East Coast jazz-rap track ever. And even though the lyrics on Illmatic are dazzling, personally I prefer the preachy, moral, sentimental new Nas over the amoral, cynical Nas of the old.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 29 April 2005 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I donno I'd describe Illmatic as being cynical and world-weary lyrically but there's so much more there, the beauty is in the details, not the dazzling technique, but the pictures he's painting. Preachy, sentimental Nas is just so hit or miss!

And from God's Son, "The Cross" has annoying production, we already mentioned "Zone Out," I could do without "Hey Nas" or "I Can" or even "Book of Rhymes." And "Thugs Mansion" is worn out for me too, to the point where I wouldn't mind not hearing it again.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Friday, 29 April 2005 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

but they sound like every other early nineties East Coast jazz-rap track ever.

As for this, I don't quite hear it, I mean I get what you're saying but maybe it's just how my ear is attuned to the music from that period. If anything, I love the beats because I hear such a wide variety despite what one would presume to be the limited palette of the technology available at the time. Do you just not like the kind of production that was going on at that time? It seems like his production since has become more subservient to his personality on his later work, I feel. Like his beats exist (with a few exceptions, like "Made U Look") almost entirely to give him the space to spread out lyrically, like "Just a Moment" seems a lot more "like every generic beat ever" to me than anything on Illmatic. And I don't think that's neccessarily a bad thing, I like "Just a Moment" a lot! It just seems that the beats have gotten less notable over time, letting Nas' personality come to the forefront, allowing him to explore different conceptual and emotional reserves. I like that he's done it, its good that he's spread out and evolved his writing the way he has. It's just so hit or miss for me though.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Friday, 29 April 2005 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Basically in Illmatic I hear more of a production/rapping balance, and later on, the production slipped into a subservient role and Nas' rapping came to the forefront on a lot of the more notable tracks. Not that either is inherently "better" than the other, just explaining how the production on Illmatic seems to stand out and is less generic to me than a lot of the production afterwards.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Friday, 29 April 2005 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I can see what you mean, and it's definitely true on Street's Disciple, but I think beats like those on "Get Down" or "What Goes Around" or "Rule" or "Dance" work well on their own. And Primo's beat on "2nd Childhood" is better than anything he did on Illmatic.

But it's true I don't like early nineties jazz-rap beats that much. To me stuff that Pete Rock or Primo or LES did back then sounds kinda samey and generic, whereas late nineties and early 00s beats have more variety.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

To me, the best thing Nas did was when he hooked up with Salaam Remi, whose beats have more diversity than Primo's or Pete Rock's.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i know salaam did "made you look", but what else?

jermaine (jnoble), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Get Down, What Goes Around, I Can, almost half the tracks on Street's Disciple, etc. Also, half the tracks on Ms. Dynamite's LP. The guy is quite overrated, I think.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoops, I mean underrated.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Nas just doesn't have the self-control to put out a good album anymore. Illmatic was under one hour, no filler. "Streets Disciple" is the most muddled piece of crap he has released. The Lost Tapes has better tracks than most of his recent albums, ant these were the b-sides and songs cut from the albums. He just needs someone to give better advice about his tracks.

burna (burna), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

haha the return of the Pete Rockist

Al (sitcom), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Nas is like the hip-hop Conor Oberst these days.

burna (burna), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Streets Disciple IS muddled, though.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

but in a sort of fascinating way...it would probably be worse if it was LESS muddled. hip hop's sandinista or something.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

M@tt otm.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Friday, 29 April 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, I don't think it's muddled in a good way. After God's Son, it's a disappointment (and partly cos the Salaam Remi production on God's Son is *great.)* I just coulodn't get an even production feel on Disciple...seems he squandered the opportunity handed to him by the whole Central Park / summer of '04 thing. Could've been king, made 50 Cent look silly.

paulhw (paulhw), Saturday, 30 April 2005 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread is both very helpful and totally NOT, if that makes sense. Too overwhelming...I kinda lost track of just HOW many albums came out since Illmatic!!! I've heard all the singles, but...damn, I'm getting old.

So I'm figuring I oughta just go buy God's Son?

Always liked Nas, was a big fan in high school. Gotta get back on the trolly.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 30 April 2005 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

OK - despite warnings, I got suckered by the low price ($11.99) and bought Street's Disciple today, figuring there would be at least a few decent tracks. (I really wanted God's Son but i have it all queued up on slsk right now and if I dig it i'll go buy the vinyl).

Street's Disciple is pretty meh, I have to say. The beats are boring as shit. I've only heard disc one so far, and I do like some of it, but so far, it hasn't made me feel that it was $12 well-spent.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 1 May 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeez Louise, disc 2 is AWFUL. The title tarck is good, but beyond that - ugh. I have a very low tolerance for hip hop that isn't great. And in Torben Ulrich speak, this is very, very far from great.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 1 May 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

dude what are you on. get i am... first.

scg, Sunday, 1 May 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

that double disc is overkill, ugh. It Was Written is great driving music.

Amon (eman), Sunday, 1 May 2005 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

dude what are you on. get i am... first.

Hahaha everyone says a different album! If ww was still posting, he'd say get nastradamus which pretty much covers every album dude has released in this thread. But yeah, I actually like I Am... best post-illmatic.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Sunday, 1 May 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
For every "Made U Look" there's a "Zone Out," if you get what I'm saying.

-- Lethal Dizzle (ddrak...), April 29th, 2005 5:28 AM. (djdee2005) (link)

Oh, come on, "Zone Out" is the *only* weak track on God's Son.

-- Tuomas (tuomas.alh...), April 29th, 2005 5:56 AM. (Tuomas)

u guys are on crack, that track is great

amon (eman), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

I like the discussions in this thread. I'm surprised Al is so anti-Timbaland beats, at least re: "You won't see me tonight"
