LIAM GALLAGHER has hit out against the entire UK music scene in an exclusive and explosive interview with NME.

In the current issue of NME, out nationwide today (April 27), the singer has attacked Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, Keane and Pete Doherty.

Speaking about Franz Ferdinand singer Alex Kapranos, Gallagher said: “He reminds me of fucking Right Said Fred. You put on 'I’m To Sexy For My Fucking Thing' next to their records and I bet you any money it’s the same person. It’s the same fucking person! He’s just gone on the Atkins diet and grown his hair! Not my thing at all. I don’t like quirky, weird music. It’s not my cup of tea all that nonsense, million miles an hour music that’s not going anywhere.”

Turning on Doherty, he added: “I’m not into smackheads. Smackheads need slaps… So what does the word Libertine mean? What does it mean? Freedom? He’s fucking in the corner doing smack with a helmet on his head! There’s nothing free about that. It’s nasty, innit? If the kids like them, fair enough, but they’re nowhere near like us. The music’s rubbish for start”.

Scissor Sisters - who claimed that Oasis lacked respect for the Glastonbury crowd following their muted performance at last year’s event – were also slammed by Liam who retorted saying: “If that’s what they call entertaining then let them ‘av it - bright colours and fucking weirdos on stilts? I’m more entertaining than that cunt. And I’ll rip his fucking vocal chords out anyday because he’s fucking rubbish.”

Even newcomers Kaiser Chiefs and Bloc Party weren’t safe from Gallagher’s acid tongue, with the singer describing the former as “a bad Blur” and the latter as “a band off University Challenge, like they’re sitting on a panel or something”.

However, in the band’s revealing interview, Gallagher did reserve praise for an unlikely star.

"It's Charlotte Church for me, man,” he stated. “She could be the next Liam. She's got a great voice and she f**king has it. She knows how to get f**king hammered and she freaks people out."

Oasis’ new album ’Don’t Believe The Truth’ is set for release on May 30, and will be preceded by the single ’Lyla’ on May 16.

petlover, Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

OMG he's totally right about Right Said Franz Ferdinand

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

He is right in a lot of those cases. However, if the new Oasis album contains even half as many great tunes as last year's Keane debut did, then I am really, really surprised?

And a "bad Blur"? Does that mean that Blur was actually good in Liam Gallagher's opinion? Was all this anti-Blur shit just a huge lie?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

y'know, if he could type he'd probably fit in round here.

elwisty (elwisty), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

I'nt BEER great!

The music’s rubbish for start.

and noooo Coke doesn't turn you into a c*nt at all!

Last sentence is pretty ironic. Nothing like your rubbish, turning the same boring tricks less effectively for nearly a decade now, band at all. I think the Libertines might actually be better than O-bloody-asis at this point.

Liam in 'is a self-regarding cunt' non-shocker. I wondered when this NME-cum-Heat magazine tittle tattle would get posted today :-/

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

The NME must burn.

Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, Keane, Kaiser Chiefs and Pete Doherty = "entire UK music scene"

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 28 April 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Somewhere Only We Know(Keane) is a really nice song.

I just had to say that.

Lovelace (Lovelace), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

I've never bought an Oasis album in my life, but I always look forward to the release of a new one, because it means a new round of G-bros interview! It's like Xmas for fans of shit-talking!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

Fans of shit talking?

elwisty (elwisty), Thursday, 28 April 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Jet are the new Oasis.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

all the shit talking used to really excite me, especially when the big bands of the day were Limp and System of a Down. It was always a breath of fresh air, no matter how much the new Oasis album didn't live up to the hype.

now its just vaugely annoying. The Gallagher brothers have become parrots of their own ideas, just repeating the same inane chatter without anything even resembling innovation.

JD from CDepot, Friday, 29 April 2005 07:12 (twenty years ago)

And a "bad Blur"? Does that mean that Blur was actually good in Liam Gallagher's opinion? Was all this anti-Blur shit just a huge lie?

-- Geir Hongro (geirhon...) (webmail), April 28th, 2005 10:41 PM. (link)

Word was, Liam told Noel "Beetlebum" was better "beatles" than Noel did. To which, noel was quoted as saying "fair enough"

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 29 April 2005 07:24 (twenty years ago)

One thing: This isn't really about the Gallagher brothers, it is about Liam. Noel has a considerably different stance, and he tends to use his time talking positively about the current stuff that he likes (such as Coldplay, for instance) rather than dragging down the stuff he does not like. Noel, too, is hardly the most intelligent person alive, but he is certainly in another league when compared to Liam.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 29 April 2005 09:59 (twenty years ago)

God bless Liam. Especially since I agree with practically everything he said there.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

geir, fuck intelligence. that interview is a lot more fun than any poxy keane album.

"What does it mean? Freedom? He’s fucking in the corner doing smack with a helmet on his head! There’s nothing free about that."

word.

N_RQ, Friday, 29 April 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

geir, fuck intelligence.

THIS IS HOW THE KHMER ROUGE STARTED

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

so right said fred is "weird, quirky music"?

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

If Liam has a problem with "fucking weirdoes on stilts" then going to Glastonbury in the first place might have been a bit of an error.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

"I'm Too Sexy" and "Deeply Dippy" are deeply weird, if you think about them.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

i really wish he hadn't brought up right said fred.

N_RQ, Friday, 29 April 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

The name Right Said Fred is very weird, for a chart pop band

DJ Mencap0))), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

yes, point taken. but i'm kind of shocked that someone would find them weird in the same way as franz ferdinand.

xpost to marcello

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

I'm just puzzled that anybody could find Franz Ferdinand weird.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

I don’t like quirky, weird music. It’s not my cup of tea all that nonsense, million miles an hour music that’s not going anywhere.

I am surprised he DOESN'T like Franz Ferdinand et al then. I wish they'd ALL go die in a pit somewhere.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

I wish the Wire would get Liam in to do Invisible Jukebox one month.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:23 (twenty years ago)

thing is I like the idea of trash-talking pop stars but not in such an abysmally turgid fashion from someone who is himself utterly irrelevant! like, at least be FUNNY.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:25 (twenty years ago)

i'd buy a ticket for an oasis/scissor sisters battle royale.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

He is funny. He's certainly a sight better at the slag-off game than most ILXors.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

He must have drank the word "faggot" out of his vocabulary.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

So what does the word Libertine mean? What does it mean? Freedom? He’s fucking in the corner doing smack with a helmet on his head! There’s nothing free about that.

This is sheer genius, if Mark E. Smith had said it you'd all be pissing yer pants with excitement

Pradaismus (Dada), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

If Derek Bailey had said it he'd get another 12-page spread in the Wire.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

[WHO IS DEREK BAILEY? WHAT IS IMPROV?]

N_RQ, Friday, 29 April 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

Dada otm.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

Derek Bailey and improv are the elephant in the living room of the Boogaloo on Wednesday night past.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)

Liam is obv proud of being able to control his drug habits in a better way than Pete Doherty is.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

“He reminds me of fucking Right Said Fred. You put on 'I’m To Sexy For My Fucking Thing' next to their records and I bet you any money it’s the same person. It’s the same fucking person! Liam. Get one education., Friday, 29 April 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

Comedy beats pedantry every time

Pradaismus (Dada), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

well, freethinker : are you one when you're a crack addict ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

What does the word Oasis mean? 'steaming turd'!!

comedy genius!

Liam. Get one education., Friday, 29 April 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

i guess there must be a thread about that but have you heard their latest single ? saw it on mtv a couple of times. still wondering who decided this was a proper "song"...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

Probably some girl called Lyla decided.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

Music stars all need to be talking more shit. Not enough shit talking!

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

how old is liam now ? can he remain a silly lad all his life ? i've always found noel's interviews quite funny...but liam is another galaxy !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

I think Oasis should just release interviews instead of albums, that was funny.

Leon Jones Reynolds (Ex Leon), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

yes ! they should release interview cd's, like all the bootlegs you find in flea markets and else...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

good idea!

Simon Williams, Friday, 29 April 2005 12:12 (twenty years ago)

hahaha

*wibbles*

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

They did have a hit single with an interview.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

liam should move a few streets down from his primrose hill gaff, into london zoo.

debden, Friday, 29 April 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

That was a hilarious and original observation.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Well, if he did that, we'd see him on Sunday...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Regardless of whether it was genuine or not, the whole Blur vs Oasis thing sold a shit-load of records.

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

I believe that was the purpose of the exercise.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

that said, although i have no interest whatsoever in oasis, i find liam much more entertaining and fun than the pseudo-intellectual guys from franck fernando and all !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Regardless of whether it was genuine or not, the whole releasing a song against the monarchy during the Jubilee thing sold a shit-load of records.

N_RQ, Friday, 29 April 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

I believe that was the purpose of the exercise.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

WHAT THE FUCK is up w/ Charlotte Church getting boozing props from LIAM FUCKING GALLAGHER? Not that I don't doubt CC likes a pint or 20, but, man, you MIGHT have a drinking problem if!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Would you rather live the 85 healthy years of Chris Martin?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

I believe that was the purpose of the exercise?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

50 YEARS AS A LION NOT 90 YEARS AS A RABBIT

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

This is the best interview I've read in years.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm shooting for 65 as an ocelot.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:56 (twenty years ago)

fair enough

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

Also, Liam is funny, but wrong....Franz Ferdinand sounds alot more like Dead or Alive* than they do Right Said Fred.

*an observation made by my next door cube neighbor that I wish I could take credit for.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:51 (twenty years ago)

franz ferdinand/dead or alive : very true ! (although i much prefer dead or alive)

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

I actually think the gay new wavey disco parts of Franz Ferdinand are the best parts.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

definitely. actually the only good thing about them is take me out. the rest, the band, the hype, the interviews : all rubbish.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

I like Michael and Dark of the Matinee too. I liked the whole album at first, but it got old fast.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

the worst being their interviews. if i read/hear the "we want to make pop songs you can dance to like blondie etc" again, my head is gonna explode...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Liam just defended the indefensible - himself!

BARMS, Friday, 29 April 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Oasis sux0r. Franz Ferdinand also. What was this all about again?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

OMG who the hell wants to dance like Blondie (besides Karen O)????

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

it was about liam being the funniest man alive in sho' business, yes ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

well, the singer of franz ferdinand is blond too, so maybe that's dance music for blond people ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

"Yeah, we're gonna make you dance like a 12-year-old imitating an epileptic fit! WELCOME BACK, ROCK!!!!"

The Ghost of Franz Ferdifuckoff (Dan Perry), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Yay!

Weird thing about this interview is that nothing's been mentioned on the Oasis list about it at all! Usually everyone's all over stuff like this. (I suspect it's because Liam was ripping into a lot of things many people there also like, but I could be wrong...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

you subscribe to the Oasis list ???

Amon (eman), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

ah ! caught (can you get a witness) !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Dude, I founded and run it. It's almost ten years old now. Never hid the fact!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

KEEP IT REAL NED! FU HATERZ!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

(jet are the new oasis? i guess that's why they are touring together. jet is ostensibly opening, although some djs in nyc are calling the msg shows at the end of the month 'jet concerts')

maura (maura), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Right Said Fred > Jet > Oasis

miccio (miccio), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

This is a pretty great interview, though

miccio (miccio), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

to get back to that interview cd idea, i think it's the first time oasis had the words "great", "good", "brilliant", "best" liked to them on ILM ! they should give up making "songs"...why bother !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

a jet/oasis bill is something dreamt up to torment me. it doesn't matter that i won't actually see it. it's painful enough to know that it's lurking out there, sucking.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

The Oasis interview disc is still the most succesful release on Fierce Panda, right?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Depends on what you mean. It got into the charts, but the Keane ones presumably sold all of the copies made.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

fierce panda ? that would be a good totem name for liam !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Dude, I founded and run it. It's almost ten years old now. Never hid the fact!

not being a fan of theirs, i'm supposed to know this how exactly?

Amon (eman), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Well, you're acting all shocked and amazed, like "NED LISTENS TO OASIS??????" so it's relatively normal for Ned to say, "Um, I'm an unapologetic superfan and always have been."

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 29 April 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

The anti-rockists on ILM feel betrayed by Ned.

"WE THOUGHT YOU WERE COOL MAAAAAN"

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 29 April 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

hey M@tt, bite my knob sir

Amon (eman), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

You got some weird kink, there.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

where?

Amon (eman), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

Hehehe.

FWIW, I don't listen to the band all that much currently but then again I don't listen to all that much I was really into around that time currently either, such being changing tastes and interests. But I will still run the list because it's easy to do, I do have all the albums and singles and will continue to get 'em, I've talked about being a fan elsewhere as well as on here...*shrug* What can I add?

I will say that one of the more bemusing conversations I've ever had was when Momus, Melinda Mess-Injure, myself and friend Ben were all having dinner in LA after a Momus show at a bookstore and he was surprised as to how one could be both an Oasis and a Sparks fan. (As I also run a mailing list for them, see.)

Anyway, I am currently listening to the remaster of Pornography, Ciara's "Oh" is growing on me and I love me the new Missy tracks = HOW WONDERFUL I AM, apparently.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

(And since I haven't said anything about it yet, Liam's art for off-the-top-of-his-head spleen is truly breathtaking.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

i can see that i should have worded it as: "there's an Oasis list?" 'twas not an "anti-rockist" attack.

Amon (eman), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

All is sweet peace, fret not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

(fwiw I like Oasis and the Sparks and Missy and the Cure too, Ned. I don't see what Momus was surprised about)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 29 April 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

hey M@tt, bite my knob sir

dude, I was kidding. But I'll bite yr knob for a small fee.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 29 April 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)
