Neither of them "white gospel" oriented, but you might like 'em.

the last nick cave album, "abattoir blues/lyre of orpheus" featured some killer gospel choir work.
"this lamb sells condos" off the new final fantasy album.
of montreal in general features spectacular harmonies.
the singalong chorus from sufjan's "chicago".
i can think of more later, but that's a start. at least for recent stuff.

Anyway, enough of them, because we were talking about Electrelane - or rather, we were trying not to, because The Valleys makes me much more inclined to buy a Chicago A Capella album than another one by them.
Some interesting suggestions here - thanks. Will report back. iLiKETRAiNS first, I think. Then György Ligeti.

This fucking song.
― Turangalila, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 07:29 (fourteen years ago)
yeah
― Choc. Clusterman (contenderizer), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 07:32 (fourteen years ago)
There's really nothing else quite like it, and nothing else this band ever released matches it. Or almost any other band, really.
― Turangalila, Wednesday, 2 May 2012 07:34 (fourteen years ago)
agree completely. they're a great band, and it's a great record overall, by far their best, but that song is just...THAT SONG. once in a lifetime thing.
― Choc. Clusterman (contenderizer), Wednesday, 2 May 2012 07:35 (fourteen years ago)
Everytime I listen to Electrelane, I really question why I need to listen to anything else. ever.
especially this song.
― Moon Fuxx (Jill), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 09:03 (thirteen years ago)
yeah but this song is an anomaly. i love it to bits and i love electrelane, but for different reasons.

― Shevek, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)
yeah but not really
― contenderizer, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 19:16 (thirteen years ago)
this song is amazing, but the recording seems to clip at the end and that always drives me crazy
― It's strange to me too. But we're talking about praxis, man. (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 16 February 2015 21:46 (eleven years ago)
so I found The Power Out for $6 in the "New Rock Sale Vinyl" bin at Salzer's. It made my weekend. I love this song so much. The rest of the album is great too.
― Team Foxcatcherwatcher (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 9 March 2015 05:52 (eleven years ago)
Somehow wish Electrelane had done an album that was pretty much variations on this song.
― nuumerykah (dog latin), Monday, 9 March 2015 09:33 (eleven years ago)
"Take My Wife" by Seekonk builds to a "The Valleys"-esque crescendo.
