ZionTrain, Friday, 29 April 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

just the crappy single

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Friday, 29 April 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

The single is terrible. Playing it safe again, Dave.

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Friday, 29 April 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

That tune is kinda smelly.

It's a trick! He wants us to THINK that the DOUBLE CD is going to be crappy, as he sits patiently before unleashing the Foo's 'White Album'

ZionTrain, Friday, 29 April 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

The Foos were my favorite band as a youngin', so I've stuck by them, but 'One by One' didn't do a thing for me. I thought 'There Is Nothing Left to Lose' was great...as well as the single "Learn to Fly."

Yeah, this new "Best of You" single is pretty weak. It relies to much on the vocals; the music just isn't memorable. But I have some faith in the album because I just read that Dave admitted there were only like 4 good tracks on 'One By One'. Then again, the idea of a double album, one rock, one acoustic, worries me.

The Foos were better when it was just Dave's project. He said that since 'One By One' it's been more about "the band."

I think the album comes out June 10th or so...probably won't leak for a while I'm guessing.

To be honest, I like One by One more than TINLTL as an album. Yet some songs on TINLTL are better than anything on One by One.

Actually, it's memorable, but not in a great way. After hearing it the second time, it got stuck in my head for half an hour, but it did get quite annoying. The song is ok. Honestly, Dave and/or the whole band is just trying too hard to make another album like One by One, it seems by the single.

It's a trick! He wants us to THINK that the DOUBLE CD is going to be crappy, as he sits patiently before unleashing the Foo's 'White Album'

That's what I thought immediatly after hearing it. I mean, to be honest, "All My Life" isn't too great, except live. "Low" was the best song on the last album and it was the last single they had from it.

I think the album comes out June 10th or so...probably won't leak for a while I'm guessing.

June 14, to be exact. I remember because it's one of my friend's birthday.

Aja (aja), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:32 (twenty years ago)

Given the scope of the man's talent, resume and far-reaching tastes, Grohl's music should be amazing. I just find so much of it so frustratingly mediocre much of the time.....which it shouldn't be.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

When you go to their web site href="http://www.foofighters.com/2005_03_10_fromdave.html" this letter pops up.

Aja (aja), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

Fuck!!

I totally forgot how to do an ancore tag.

Alex!!! Help!

You can read the letter if you want.

Aja (aja), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

Damn.

It's anchor!

Aja (aja), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

If I knew what an ancore tag was, I'd help you out.

Just read the letter. Hard to believe they've been around ten years. I still remember seeing the posters for their first album pasted up on some scaffolding behind the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and thinking "what the fucks's a Foo and why does one need to fight it? Silly Grunge people!"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 April 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

Like I said before, it's anchor.

The whole thing with the name... I thought they were making a referance to a Foo Dog at first.

Aja (aja), Friday, 29 April 2005 04:04 (twenty years ago)

I've only heard the single a couple times, but so far I don't think it's so bad. I am kinda surprised that the first single isn't something harder and more uptempo, to contrast with the inevitable single from the acoustic disc. the 2nd album was pretty good though, I think he's more capable of pulling of a double album than people are giving him credit for. those last couple LPs were kinda weak, though.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 29 April 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

its a great album... perhaps the acoustic disk drags a bit - no, actually it doesn't. the metal album is bludgeoning, very heavy, though songs like 'resolve' mix that with the typical grohl melodies. and 'friend of a friend', on the acoustic album, is a track Grohl wrote 15 years ago just after he joined Nirvana (its on the pocketwatch cassette), and is an exercise in the power of simplicity.

stevie (stevie), Friday, 29 April 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

Dang, how'd you hear it? Do you think "Best of You" is a great song? How does the rest compare to that?

Patrick South (Patrick South), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

'friend of a friend', on the acoustic album, is a track Grohl wrote 15 years ago

I have the original version of that. It's just Dave and an acoustic guitar. Did he add drums and/or bass to it on the album?

Are there anyother old songs by Dave on the new one?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 30 April 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

heard it while interviewing grohl for mojo last week... i can't actually remember which one 'best of you' was... i know i really loved resolve, though.

there's no drums but a little bass on friend of a friend on the album, but the rest of it is all new songs. taylor sings one song and sounds like john fogerty. nora jones guests on a bossanova song, which is pretty neat.

stevie (stevie), Sunday, 1 May 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh, God.

Taylor sings? Why????

I'd listen to Richard Butler sing for ten hours straight before I'd listen to Taylor sing. I heard him sing on their cover of "Have a Cigar" and it was painful.

Please tell me they did a lot with Taylor's vocals.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 1 May 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

More deets! How does it compare to their other albums, quality- and sound-wise?

Patrick South (Patrick South), Sunday, 1 May 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

The single's on the radio.

I just remembered the reason why this single isn't too great. It sounds like every single song on the last album smashed together. That "oh oh" part sounds like "Come Back". Part of the chorus sounds like "Halo". The begining sounds like "Lonely As You" and the end sounds like the end of "Have it All".

Aja (aja), Sunday, 1 May 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

People are crazy!

http://bbs.jacksonunited.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=next_topic;f=7;t=000999;go=older

Just about everyone said they loved it. I'm one of the biggest Foo fans and I just like it.

The only good thing about that thread is they got the lyrics.

I’ve got another confession to make
I’m your fool
Everyone’s got their chains to break
Holdin’ you

Were you born to resist or be abused?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?

Are you gone and onto someone new?
I needed somewhere to hang my head
Without your noose
You gave me something that I didn’t have
But had no use
I was too weak to give in
Too strong to lose
My heart is under arrest again
But I break loose
My head is giving me life or death
But I can’t choose
I swear I’ll never give in
I refuse

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
You trust, you must
Confess
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Oh...

Oh...Oh...Oh...Oh...

Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
The life, the love
You die to heal
The hope that starts
The broken hearts
You trust, you must
Confess

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?

I’ve got another confession my friend
I’m no fool
I’m getting tired of starting again
Somewhere new

Were you born to resist or be abused?
I swear I’ll never give in
I refuse

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
You trust, you must
Confess
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Oh...

Aja (aja), Sunday, 1 May 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

Damn!

Even the lyrics are just like the stuff off the last album.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 1 May 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

I'd listen to Richard Butler sing for ten hours straight before I'd listen to Taylor sing. I heard him sing on their cover of "Have a Cigar" and it was painful.

Hey, what the fuck? Why are we cutting on the `Furs?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 May 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

those lyrics are awful

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 2 May 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

Hey, what the fuck? Why are we cutting on the `Furs?

-- Alex in NYC (vassife...), May 2nd, 2005 6:04 PM. (vassifer)

Actually I'm not. Honestly, I love Richard's voice, but I used to hate it. And I know some people can't stand more than half an hour of his singing. I on the other hand, can handle about 5-6 hours, at least, that about how much I listen to them a day now.

I probably should have said 5 hours of Kurt singing, huh?

Aja (aja), Monday, 2 May 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

that's about

-- Hari A$hur$t (lindseyloha...), May 2nd, 2005 6:09 PM. (Toaster)

Yeah, Dave was never my favorite lyric writer, but there are worse lyrics out there, some even written by him.

Aja (aja), Monday, 2 May 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

Aja (aja), Sunday, 22 May 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Oh, good Lord!!

Aja (aja), Saturday, 28 May 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

i downloaded 'Miracle' it's a complete snoozefest.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 28 May 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Why that one?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 28 May 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

The music to "DOA" is ok, but the vocals just seem wierd. They don't really fit the song.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 28 May 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

I got 'Miracle' because the other Studio takes all had titles that were kind of lame.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 28 May 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

also i had a feeling it would be an acoustic number, which is what i was interested in hearing.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 28 May 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

"What If I Do?" is acoustic, I think.

It reminds me a little of Chris Brokaw, until Dave starts singing.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 28 May 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Aja, did you used to post on the official foo fighters message board perchance?

I used to.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 28 May 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I can. I'm too young.

You had to be at least 18 to post on that board, at least it was that way the last time I checked.

I'll check again.

The begining of "In Your Honor" sounds a bit like "Enough Space" but the vocals get wierd on that one too.

What the hell is going on with Dave's voice??

Aja (aja), Saturday, 28 May 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Ah, it didn't used to be that way. I posted there just before the 3rd album.

Dave's voice = autotuned to fuck on these tracks.

Who told this band it was a good idea to make a double album

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 28 May 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

Who told this band it was a good idea to make a double album

-- Hari A$hur$t (lindseyloha...), May 28th, 2005 9:27 AM. (Toaster)

No idea, but maybe it's ok. I don't know. Maybe they're trying to make up for not releasing an album for the last THREE years. Or a sort of ten year anniversary thing.

I'm registered on the Foo Fighters board now.

The age restriction is gone.

So I guess this leaked. I don't do that whole torrent thing, so somebody else get it and hook me up please?

Patrick South (Patrick South), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 03:26 (twenty years ago)

Gotta say: I think "Best of You" is really not too great.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 18 June 2005 07:18 (twenty years ago)

i've said this before and i'll say it again: the very first foo fighters album (the one grohl basically threw together by himself just after nirvana's demise) is awesome! it's really fun and catchy and sounds nothing like their other albums, which are just total tickets to blahsville.

latebloomer: We kissy kiss in the rear view (latebloomer), Saturday, 18 June 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Other than the title track and "Free Me", most of this stuff hasn't resonated well with me at all. YAWN!

ZionTrain (ZionTrain), Saturday, 18 June 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Not that anyone would care, but their 10th anniversary show in Roswell NM will be broadcasted tonight via the internets.

van nostrum (Buck Van Smack), Saturday, 18 June 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

i do like the 1st album. and the 2nd one has a few good songs on it.
but i really think grohl should stick to drumming.
