Apologies if I've got this in the wrong category...

Anyways! The site is up now for the Juan MacLean album, Less Than Human, coming out July 4:

http://www.thejuanmaclean.com/

Not much interesting yet, aside from album clips- and unfortunately the clips are about 30 seconds each, and not most of the track like on the LCD Soundsystem site. Bah. Still anticipating this one quite heavily, especially since there are a couple more tracks with Nancy Whang vocals as on "You Can't Have It Both Ways."

And on a kinda related note, does anyone have Six Finger Satellite recommendations? I'm digging Paranormalized very much and I'm curious where to go next.

Telephonething, Friday, 29 April 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

ooh this is gonna be good. i can feel it.

strng hlkngtn, Friday, 29 April 2005 02:18 (twenty years ago)

And on a kinda related note, does anyone have Six Finger Satellite recommendations?

Wait, did I miss a connection between the two bands? Or are we talking more conceptual?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

The Juan MacLean is John MacLean, guitarist and keyboardist for 6FS. James Murphy of the DFA was their soundman and produced their last album.

Telephonething, Friday, 29 April 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

GET WITH THE PROGRAM NED.

I really like Law of Ruins

PS - PROVIDENCE RULZ

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

Nutty, I hadn't realized that's what happened to the dude! Ya learn something new etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

law of ruins seconded. les savy stole their best ideas from this band.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

I have pretty high hopes for this, if only because there's a song about gay robot sex. I mean, that's three stars out of five right there.

Telephonething, Friday, 29 April 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

I think Severe Exposure is even better than Paranomalized.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

haha, on the ts "i feel love" vs. "soon" thread i had to stop myself from making a comment about gay robot sex re "i feel love" and that huge fear of disco thread we had.

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

but yes, the world can only better a better place with more songs about gay robot sex in it.

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

yeah, this is gonna be aight.

fra lippo liposuction (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 29 April 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, forgot to mention: there's also a video for "By the Time I Get to Venus." With (implied) gay robot sex. Woo!

Telephonething, Friday, 29 April 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

i didn't really think much of this project when the DFA were getting rolling but now i'm coming around. this album really does sound like it's going to be great. i think "i, robot" was the track that really made me come around.

the last three tracks sound particularly awesome. and the texts that accompany the tracks on that radio thingy are raw and awesome in a denis johnson sort of way.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

have you heard the black leotard front tune, vahid? the vinyl for that is (still) practically glued to the turntable at chez tricky.

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

also, this thread is reminding me that i need to take human after all out of it's shiny cellophane and listen to it eventually.

tricky (disco stu), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

this'll be good, yeah. hopefully there'll be some euphoric "Give Me Every Little Thing" moments . . .
re: Six Finger Satellite - Severe Exposure! "Parlour Games" is the best track ever, + Goldenaxe do a wicked cover of "Simian Fever".

etc, Friday, 29 April 2005 03:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm excited. "Give Me Every LIttle Thing" is my fav. moment on dfa 3.

Lethal Dizzle (djdee2005), Friday, 29 April 2005 03:50 (twenty years ago)

If everybody's so down with gay robot sex why aren't more people rocking out to "I am the Robot" by My Robot Friend?

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 29 April 2005 04:11 (twenty years ago)

Because I've only heard "The Fake". To slsk, &c.

etc, Friday, 29 April 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

the only my robot friend song i've heard is 'sex machine' but it's pretty good

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 April 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

The three or so minutes I saw of The Juan Maclean a couple of evenings ago sounded pretty cool. 6FS - 'The Pigeon Is The Most Popular Bird' does it for me

DJ Mencap0))), Friday, 29 April 2005 08:20 (twenty years ago)

the juan maclean are playing at the druzzi's warehouse party this saturday. he's fucking fantastic live.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 29 April 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

that's in london, by the way.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 29 April 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

Paranormalized is kind of disappointing.. Severe Exposure is the one I'd pick but I am lazy and have a short attention span and a really puerile sense of humor (search.. "Board the Bus"). Law of Ruins is probably their best, actually.

can't wait for this.

daria g (daria g), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

You. Must. Get. Law Of Ruins. Today!

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe they named it "Less Than Human"

W i l l (common_person), Friday, 29 April 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

This is the DFA album I've been most excited about. "Less than Human" was my favorite track from the last comp. Very odd that it doesn't seem to be included.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

The clips sound excellent.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

yeah yeah chiming in: the JMcL is my favorite stuff out of DFA. i'm very excited!

g e o f f (gcannon), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Is there enough extra material for a bonus CD a la LCD?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

My friend's extremely twee indie band has an album engineered by John MacLean circa 1998. Its supposed to be insane. But its canned.

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Lindstrom & Prins Thomas remix too for the first single - excitement.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

TRACK 2: Sounds like "Coke and Mirrors" a bit

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

remixes also by Booka Shade/Reverso 68!

wow!

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 29 April 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

the choice in remixers is hott.

tricky hilton (disco stu), Friday, 29 April 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Severe Exposure!!! Man, that album is so good. You should totally buy it. "Rabies (Baby's Got The)." That's all I've gotta say.

And I'm real psyched about this Juan Maclean album too.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 29 April 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

what's his live setup like?

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 29 April 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Not as good as the later LPs, but the Machine Cuisine ep is where 6FS started to go electronic. Two words: Moog Liberation.

btasc, Friday, 29 April 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Hahah, their page on subpop was last updated in 1995!

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Huh? Their site had to have been done in at least 1998.

Vic Funk, Friday, 29 April 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

There are two different sites on Sub Pop...one to promote Paranormalized, one for Law of Ruins.

And oddly enough, Sub Pop are still selling the albums (for $10 a pop), even though they're out of print. I'm tempted to just pick up Law of Ruins and Severe Exposure in one go...

Telephonething, Friday, 29 April 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

http://www.subpop.com/bands/6fs/sixfingr.html
Six Finger Satellite will spend summer of 1995 on tour.
This fall, they will be touring some more.
After that, they will embark on a tour of sorts.
This will be followed by more touring.

Six Finger Satellite will not be home for Christmas.

xpost

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

The Law of Ruins one is the one you get, though, when you use the dropbox on Sub Pop's main page.

Vic Funk, Friday, 29 April 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

I should have bought that first split 7" when I saw it in Providence for like $5.... :(

Even stupider: Ian Johnson not buying massively OOP Forcefield/Lightning Bolt 7".

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Is this the group that gets drunk women to babble into a tape recorder over bass vamps? Cause if so I think they sound great, I'm lookin forward to the record and the Booka Shade mix!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

"Group"

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

I figure once you put a "the" in front of your name you're practically begging to be called a "group." But maybe this is a reverse psych-out which I have fallen for.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

jw, Saturday, 21 May 2005 04:51 (twenty years ago)

The latest Beats in Space has some Juan- "Dance With Me" and the Booka Shade remix (!) of "Tito's Way".

http://www.beatsinspace.net/main.html

Telephonething, Saturday, 21 May 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

i am having an interesting reaction this record. on the one hand, i am happy with the review i gave it; when it's playing i think "wow, this is a pretty good record." but i NEVER FEEL LIKE PLAYING IT. i have probably listened to it four times since i got it. i just see it sitting there, know what it sounds like (good), and still feel all "ehh." which is odd because when i first heard them i listened to the singles over and over! i think spencer may be the closest to being otm of anyone. if he was gonna do a Dance Album, i wish he had actually thrown a couple songs in there, or sequenced it thematically, ala discovery. the lack of the old singles is baffling.

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 26 July 2005 11:49 (twenty years ago)

cough, cough, so...

what the old singles i need, exactly?

apart from Give Me Every Little Thing which through some process of Lamarckian evolution has already imprinted itself on my DNA?

feel free to tell me to fuck off and use the search function.

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

strongo OTM!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

you can't have it both ways!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

(xp to lukas... and that's a name of a song, not a comment on your post)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

The obvious key missing tracks are:

"You Can't Have It Both Ways"
"By the Time I Get to Venus"

I also like these
"Less Than Human" (my favorite thing on the DFA Comp #2)
"I Robot"

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

thanks, if those tracks do for me what Give did, i may be able to go off my meds for good.

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Of all the singles, "By The Time I Get To Venus" is the most overrated, GMELT is a million times better.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

I like them about equally for different reasons. I'm not so into some of the vocals on "Give Me Every Little Thing".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

I've always thought "My Time Is Running Out" is deeply underrated by everybody. It's so pretty!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 26 July 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

"You Can't Have It Both Ways" is my fave of these, as it's basically modernised Wax Trax for hipsters.

Baaderonixx cancels each other out (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 06:43 (twenty years ago)

I had been pretty nonplussed by this, thought it was good but not amazing, enjoyed it when i played it but seldom felt the need to play it (like Jess said), but last night I stuck it on while playing some Pro Evo and REALLY enjoyed it. Now this may just have been cos I was batering the goals in with Classic Netherlands...

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 4 August 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

i've been listening to it in the gym (there's no way i can write that without sounding like a twat, is there?) and it's starting to grow on me. it's still not half what i'd hoped for, though.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 4 August 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

I had been pretty nonplussed by this, thought it was good but not amazing

so you'd better look up "nonplussed" in the dictionary then, before you write a review or somethin

eek, Friday, 5 August 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

I really think it's the worst electronic album I've heard in the past year or so. Not saying it's the worst, just the worst *I've* heard. The "fucking round with fruity loops" thing is so true. There's nothing clever with using early 90s pre-sets. There's no romance, funk or beauty in this turgid mess.

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 5 August 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

xpost, donut was saying the same thing about the Out Hud record (which I really really like). I'm not so into Less Than Human, especially in light of previous Juan Maclean tracks, but I'm wondering how to think about all this "pre-set" hate.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 6 August 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Yeah I'm with Spencer about this album. GMELT is still AMAZING though.

deej.., Saturday, 20 August 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

the Cajmere remix of GMELT is killing me

manuel (manuel), Sunday, 21 August 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

God dammit, what is it about The Juan that attracts der pokerbot so much?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

It's a gamble if you buy this record.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

gygax- true. I still love about half of it though.

"You Can't Have It Both Ways" is my fave of these, as it's basically modernised Wax Trax for hipsters.

Hm. Any Wax Trax, er, tracks in particular? "You Can't etc" is probably my favorite DFA single (well, that and "Casual Friday"), and I'd love to hear more of anything at all like it.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

"You Can't" is great indeed.
Re: Wax Trax, you could check out some Thrill Kill Kult, KMFDM and early Lords of Acid for example.

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 06:45 (twenty years ago)

Damn it, I went into my local store weeks ago asking about this album then realized it was only released in the UK. I don't think they knew who Juan Maclean was, but now I'm told they have the record! I feel vaguely responsible, wonder if I should pick it up...

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:09 (twenty years ago)

It's ok

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

I guess every time I play this one, the gambling spam goes up.
Anyway, I likes, and it's really appropriate right now.....

The Popish Plot (dymaxia), Friday, 26 August 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

what a surprise another ilm thread progresses...new album guys i'm excited, its leaked its really good, i'm dissapointed, its ok, worst album ever.

twelve, Sunday, 28 August 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

You forgot the final phase, total thread spamming.

deej.., Sunday, 28 August 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

What about the late adopters (with the late line apparently being a month after release, now) who pick stuff up who like it? I finally got this album and think it's pretty good!

mike h. (mike h.), Sunday, 28 August 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

be careful your messing with the rules

twelve, Sunday, 28 August 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Hey, I still like about...let's see, three-quarters of it.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Sunday, 28 August 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

nah, the late adopter thing is part of the rules, check some older threads.

mike h. (mike h.), Sunday, 28 August 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Been listening to it pretty much constantly for the last couple of months, I think its fantastic. It's been moving me in a way no electronic album has for a long time.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 28 August 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

anyone got the skinny on the new remixes? I hear tell of Cajmere?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 2 September 2005 09:07 (twenty years ago)

from the DFA site: The next single to be released is Give Me Every Little Thing featuring remixes by Cajmere (featuring Dajae), Xpress 2 and Putsch 79.

willem (willem), Friday, 2 September 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

wow! I heard the Cajmere one is amazing. That's like the best track on there too.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 2 September 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

THANK YOU. My inbox was filling up with fucking Texas Hold 'Em spam.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Sunday, 4 September 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

the cajmere remix is peak-time jacking chicago house, really nice and reduced (almost to a dj tool).

Anyone mention yet that the album cover's a Chrome ripoff?

This dude has made my 2005. One of the funniest, solidest dudes ever, once you get to know him. Juan = O.G.

you mean OJ!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

he got offended when a friend of mine asked if his name was really juan! she was like, well you don't look hispanic. come to think of it he may have been annoyed that she prefaced this with "don't worry, i'm not hitting on you."

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

In a totally unbiased opinion THE most underrated record of 2005. Really saddened it did not make one single year end "list", despite being a great album, great singles and great remixes. I honestly think it is one of the most cohesive dance/electro/pop albums made in a long time. No one else really seemed to care. I encourage everyone to check Juan live, they are now a 4 piece band with 2 drummers - they have become a strange cross between Hawkwind and Moodymann. I am just a fan. someday I will get to actually meet "Juan". They play Dec 30 in NYC and 12/31 in Chicago.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Thursday, 22 December 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

I listened to this again this morning and still not feeling it at all. Very disappointing.

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Friday, 2 February 2007 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

It's my riding-the-exercise-bike album

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Friday, 2 February 2007 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

I like how early on it's all 'machine funky' and later is quite pretty, with 'love is in the air' as the link between the two sides.

the 'gimme every little thing' 12" is the best thing that came of it. loved the original when I heard it on the colette mix and all the mixes (save the xpress 2 one) are great. juan played the cajmere mix of it when DJing here in melbourne!

slackety yax (H2-H4), Saturday, 3 February 2007 08:26 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, so dud this album, really disappointing after seeing them live (which I'd highly recommend)
