Tago Mago - Can

Sam Therapy, Friday, 29 April 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

GOD ALMIGHTY ITS BEEN TWO YEARS ENOUGH OF THE OUTKAST THREADS.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

This is of course the thread where the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack really belongs.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:13 (twenty years ago)

And the "Grease" one.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

I was going to say "Ummagumma" but the second "experimental" side has good things on it (and where do you think Can got the idea for "Tago Mago"?)

Pradaismus (Dada), Friday, 29 April 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

what are these "double albums"? like kylie's greatest hits?

N_RQ, Friday, 29 April 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

If we're talking old-style vinyl doubles, then there's The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - the second album shows a definite decline in standards from the first one.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

The second one contains "The Lamia", "The Colony Of Sippermen" and possibly the best version of the title track. So, no, I wouldn't say that.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

I am surprised that you wouldn't say that. The second album is notably more "experimental" and less melodic. It is very arty-farty when compared to other albums of the period such as Leo Sayer's "Timeless Flight."

Comstock Carabinieri (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

The second album is experimental and melodic. Just like all symphonic rock at its best.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

And just like Mozart at his best as well.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Mozart was a pretentious, unmelodic clown. His aimless posing compares unfavourably with the more considered and melodic composers of the period, such as Salieri.

Comstock Carabinieri (nostudium), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

The ballad half of "Bad Girls," except for "Dim All the Lights."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 29 April 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Exile on Main Street...sides 1 and 2 fantastic, sides 3 and 4 dodgy except for a couple of tracks.

Wasn't it good (?) how some double albums (especially if a bit concepty) had sides 1 and 4 on one disc and two and three on the other, so you could play side one then side two on your autochanged then lift it off, trun it over, and play sides three and four.

Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is a quadruple album, I saw one this lunchtime...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 29 April 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

so does that mean the most recent hella and r. kelly albums are quadruples, too? because if not, they'd both qualifty for sure.

xhuxk, Friday, 29 April 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

I'd say Tago Mago warrants its own sub-thread: "Double albums where one LP is accessible/enjoyable & the other experimental/difficult." Yoko Ono's Fly and Zappa's Freak Out! are others.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 29 April 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Wilco - Being There. 90% of the good stuff is front-loaded on Sides 1 and 2 (or CD1, if you look at it that way).

John Hunter, Friday, 29 April 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

There is no ballad half of "Bad Girls". The ballads make up side 3, while the synthpop side 4 is the best thing on the entire album.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 29 April 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Amon Düül II's Yeti. Relatively speaking, it's all fantastic, but the first more-songey half stomps on the more improv second half. Can't say the same about Tanz Der Lemminge, where it's all good all 'round.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 29 April 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Geir, you forget that many 70s albums have sides 1 and 4 on one record, and 2 and 3 on the other.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 29 April 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

I own Bad Girls on vinyl, and sides 1 and 4 are one the same record. So Alfred OTM, although I think we disagree which is the good or bad record.. haha.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 29 April 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, donut. I was talking about the original vinyl LP, which has the disco stuff on sides 1 and 4 (and, yes, 4 is my favorite; see the "Bad Girls" thread created yesterday).

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

The Brinsley Schwarz twofer with their first two albums- second album (near) classic, first album dud.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 29 April 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

The Magma live 2xLP I fits the bill I think
