At last summer's Newport Jazz Festival, I saw the Heath Brothers playing on a side stage. Percy Heath took a beautiful pizzicato cello solo on Yardbird Suite, after which Jimmy Heath, 75, yelled, "I wanna be like him when I grow up!"

While this was going on, a tribute to the MJQ was going on on the main stage. Which was also pretty great, but still.

Kay is gone, too. Heath was indeed the last of the MJQ. RIP.
