So, I just heard the song "twin cinema" this morning. I'd say it's a pretty solid NP song, nothing spectacular, though I imagine it'll probably be stuck in my head on and off for the rest of the day. Any other thoughts?

I love this song. Much better than I expected. I thought Electric Version was far inferior to Mass Romantic, so this gives me hope.

They've got to get more Neko songs on there...there wasn't enough of her on EV, which was the biggest problem with that record.

I love the song. It's not quite on par with "The Laws Have Changed" or "Letter From An Occupant," but certainly among their best material. It didn't full click for me until the third time I heard it.

I'm super excited about the album, it should be a lot of fun.

You were right. Electric Version was so inferior, it affected my opinion of the band completely to the point where I don't even like Mass Romantic anymore. It highlighted what was bad and gimmicky about the band. This new mp3 sounds like lack of progression.

Said it on the other thread but this is just a great record. Very high energy and hooks galore. It's easily their most consistently enjoyable album. That said, there's no single track that's quite as good as "Letter from an Occupant" or "The Laws Have Changed," but it's hardly disappointing.

The melodies on Electric Version still sound much more difficult to me, more complicated and tangled, and not as immediate. My second time through Mass Romantic (and The Slow Wonder), I already felt a strong familiarity with every track; some tracks on Electric Version took three listens just to gain perspective on where they were about to go after each measure. I personally didn't feel as familiar with it until maybe the fourth or fifth listen, and I was never as taken with it as I was by the first album. The new one seems like a pleasant middle-ground. Not as much power-pop throttle as MR, not as many twists/turns as EV.

It is definitely a bit headier, but I think the energy level comes very close to the best NPs stuff at times-- esp. on "The Town Halo". The songwriting is also super focused, and for my money, has much more direction than most of EV, if not quite the spirit.

Ryan P'fork OTM in his first post re: Mass Romantic beating listeners over the head (in a good way), though I don't know about EV having that many twists and turns. Whenever I played it (which, for a couple months, was almost every other day) (yeah boy), it seems like every track is its own discrete unit, and it just so happens that they're all on the same album. "Hey, kids, it's a Carl Newman exclusive!" *three minutes of boingy-boing* *five seconds of silence* "Hey, kids, it's a..." Twin Cinema definitely has more flow.

i dunno, it just seems like they just dressed up the record with more bells and whistles and more "look at how clever we are" obtuse arrangements to make up for the songs not being as catchy as the first two. i mean, i like it ok - "jackie dressed in cobras" is great, and so are a few others, but i don't think it's anywhere close to EV and MR. particularly MR. i'm likely overreacting, but i dug the first two so much i probably had overinflated expectations.

I actually love Newman's lyrics, more and more with each listen. All those unique striking, singular images: "2 chicks in the parking lot crack wise on the price of fame they stood to gain." "In the streetlight dawn, this beat turns on." "I've cried five rivers on the way here. Which one will I skate away on?"

I'd actually love to hear his process. Does he write them first and then figure out complex ways to cram them into the cadances on the songs?

I think he comes up with the cadences first and then finds words and phrases that fit them. I seem to remember there was an interview where he admitted as much, though I could be imagining it - I think it may have been on Pitchfork. I liked the lyrics on Slow Wonder better - they seemed more down-to-earth and understandable - but it seems like he feels the need to be enigmatic on the New Pornos stuff.

I mentioned this on another New Pornographers thread, but I highly recommend getting the live session versions of "Bones of an Idol" and "Streets of Fire" on iTunes. "Bones of an Idol" is sung by Kathryn Calder, and I think she does a better job on that particular song, and "Streets of Fire" has a better arrangement and has Carl, Kathryn, and Kurt singing together instead of Dan and Neko. The versions of "Sing Me Spanish Techno" and "Graceland" are nothing special, though.

As for the catchiness - I didn't think it was as potent and catchy as the first two records at first, but I've come to really really really love the record. It's without a shadow of a doubt my favorite New Pornographers album, and I think that is unlikely to ever change.

I'm not crazy about the consensus that seems to have built around Twin Cinema as their best album.

To be clear, I'm a mega fan. I believe their recorded catalog is the best of the 21st century so far, and TC is incredible.
