Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Have a good time, you guys.

(memory: Dawn and I going to see them at the Town and Country, before it shut to become the "Forum".

Band come onstage...
Dawn: "Hope they start with "Kennedy"
Band: "Chink chink chink d'chink Chink chink chink d'Clanggggg"

i.e. they did... )

TWP live is almost always a satisfying time, in my experience. Long sets. No bullshit. No encore. Tho', I must say, I wouldn't mind it if they went light on the new material.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

have heard great reports of toronto(?) gig. lots of old stuff apparently.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

This is news that is good.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 April 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Saw them for the first time ever this past Wednesday and this was one of the best shows I've seen recently. I'm not a huge fan or anything (I own Watusi and a Peel session, and a handful of mp3s), so I can only imagine how mind-blowing it must've been for longtime fans.

I believe they played maybe two songs off the new one (the album's bookends), plus a Cinerama track. From my limited knowledge of their songs, they played "Once More", "Kennedy", "Spangle"...

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Friday, 29 April 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

going to see Dylan tonight

meister, Friday, 29 April 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

A friend in Madison said they ruled last Friday night. They played new stuff and Cinerama stuff, too, so beware.

Bucky, Friday, 29 April 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm going Alex, might introduce myself. Apparently the formula is newer stuff first half (including Cinerama), then 25 minutes of blistering Bizarro / Seamonsters. I've never seen 'em! (comes from living in New Zealand), but have been a fan since Bizarro came out ('89, I think).

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 29 April 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Look for me, Paul....I'll be wearing this t-shirt

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 April 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

I like it that 1. your shirts are unique, and 2. you plan 'em in advance (or you've had it on all day). Anyway, yeah, will find you.

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 29 April 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

I am going. I have a shirt planned in advance too.

h0t h0t h0rsey (Carey), Friday, 29 April 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Not just 'Bizarro' and 'Seamonsters,' either. They played "My Favourite Dress" early in the set in Seattle.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Well, I was wearing a different shirt for most of the day, but a certain little one year old decided to evacuate the contents of her little nostrils all over one of its sleeves, so I felt a change was well in order.

And the shirt in question is not unique. My friend Mike Coles is the man responsible. Find'em here:

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

The Seattle show was the best I've seen in ages!

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I felt the same way. Sorry I didn't see you there, but it was so packed we couldn't find *anyone* we knew.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

What is the typical setlist like on this tour?

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Errr... did you read the thread at all?

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was hoping someone would post a previous set.

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

Oh, OK. Sorry - I misunderstood.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

Ah, no problem Alba. Hopefully someone who is going to the show tonight will post the setlist when they get home.

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Great show. Lots of old stuff ("Queen of Outer Space", "Dalliance", "Dare", "Kennedy", "Go Go Dancer", "My Favorite Stuff", "Once More" and that piano track on Watusi, among others). New stuff actually sounded pretty great. Dave dry and funny as always. I'd post a longer revierw, but am hungover and juggling a one year old.

Saw Carey from ILX, but didn't find Paulhw. It was odd seeing this band again....I'd seen them literally about eleven times since 1989, but they were always sort've still a going concern. Last night seemed more about nostalgia, in a way. New line-up of band is perfectly competent, but the original drummer (Shawn?) was sorely missed (especially on "Kennedy," oddly buried in mid-set). Only took two pictures (no one else seemed to be taking pics, so I got paranoid about taking my camera out).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 30 April 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Hahah..."My Favorite Dress", not stuff.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 30 April 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

Alex was exactly like I thought he would be. Sorry I was so hungover and that not entirely intelligible. I didn't know that they never did encores. The set seemed so short without one.

h0t h0t h0rsey (Carey), Saturday, 30 April 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and it WAS because of roller skating.

h0t h0t h0rsey (Carey), Saturday, 30 April 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Alex, sorry I missed you (dark and hard to find people too...). I arrived at about 10:30, which I thought would be spot-on, to find them finishing "My Favourite Dress", maybe about 6 songs in. So I was vaguely annoyed with myself about that, and stayed a bit grumpy throughout.
The things that bugged me: for a sold out show, there wasn't much atmosphere, or sense of a set building. Felt like one song after another. The bassist looked bored, and wasn't playing hard enough (espcially noticeable during Kennedy). Ditto the drummer, whose cymbals and toms you could barely hear.
But, Gedge was great, in good voice, and I agree that songs from the new album sounded beefier and more impressive in concert. But I still felt there was a spark missing, maybe cos of the rhythm section.

paulhw (paulhw), Saturday, 30 April 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the rhythm section was a bit anaemic (sp?). The second guitar player did well enough, but looked like he should've been playing for Helmet.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 30 April 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

They were superb at the Black Cat in DC last night. No problems with any band member - all looked to be having fun.

paul c (paul c), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm trying to imagine the point of a band with a lousy rhythm section that calls itself the Wedding Present, and I'm failing.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's not that they were lousy, just not up to the band's former standards.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

agreed that they were solid in DC last night

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Ahh, just yesterday I was wearing my "seamonsters" shirt that I bought in '91 when I saw them at the Marquee in NYC. It was the end of the tour so they were unloading the shirts for a dollar each!

Oh, and GREAT show, btw...

ianinportland (ianinportland), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Not only (a) do I have that shirt (b) did I get it at that very same show, but (c)I WAS WEARING MINE YESTERDAY TOO!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

Wedding Present played Bizarro from start to finish tonight and it was so awesome.

no turkey unless it's a club sandwich (polyphonic), Sunday, 25 April 2010 08:40 (fifteen years ago)

Yah I saw them in Cambridge, MA and they were indeed the unstoppable band they once were. From 85-95 or so they could do virtually no wrong. It's funny but the few new songs Gedge played just paled in comparison to the Bizarro material - his songwriting and vocal style has changed over the years, lost some of it's simplicity and doesn't work for me anymore.
