TELL ME ALL ABOUT ROBERT BROBERG!

My EMI Svenska copy of *De 20 Mest Onskade Med Robert Broberg* rules. Plus, he looks so cool & sexy & disheveled on the cover. Is he a national treasure in Sweden? He could do it all: Lush (and south american) orchestral crooner pop, cool novelty sound effect songs ("Huppegupptacksfard" is awesome), live Swedish blues-folk rave-ups with extra handclaps, funny bagpipe-driven singalongs, frenchy-style chanson with c&w(!) backing and insanely goofy vocals, ragtimey goofs (common with a lot of euro-pop stars, not just 60's psych bands), funky acoustic oddities like "Uppblasbara Barbara", spoken word!, and introspective downer folk with duelling out-of-tune saxophones! I love "The Pling & Plong-Sang". I don't even know how to describe it. And peaking of indescribable! Can we talk about "Ingen BH Under Blusen/Kom Och Lek Med Mej"!!! I love that thing. Did he ever make a whole record like that? Sorry, I do not know how to type those umlauts and those little circles under the A's.

Ingen BH Under Blusen/Kom Och Lek Med Mej = No Braha Under the Blouse/Come Play With Me. His songs are the Swedish equivalent to Brittish pub-rock, with "witty" lyrics. I understand this record probably sounds "exotic" to non-Scandinavians; he's kind of ubiquitous here though so the pottyness really ends up quite irritating. Alcazar sang his "Båtlåt" (Boatsong) on Swedish tv last summer.

No, i definitely can tell that anyone under the age of 50 from Sweden probably just rolls their eyes at the mention of his name. If I grew up watching him on variety shows on t.v. and stuff i no doubt would feel differently about his stuff. But i didn't! and some of his stuff really does sound fresh to these ears. Young french folk roll their eyes at johnny hallyday and young brits moan when cliff richard is on the telly. probably. just a guess. i really do like the "sound" of some of the songs. great guitar tones.

Båtlåt is of course brilliant! :-)

And yes my parents, in their early sixties, love him.

Robert Broberg is the anti-christ! I´d rather sit 20 years on Guatanamo than listen to 1 second of Broberg. But if Broberg is your cup of tea I´d like to point you in the direction of Stefan & Krister - Sweden´s very own Simon & Garfunkel
