Norwegian indie. New album got 9/10 in NME last week (whatever that means). But has anyone else here heard their stuff and if so are they worth investigating?

I just heard the song on my local "college" radio station here... It was a song about everyone being cheated by everyone. It sounded like it was influenced by the Stones, Camper van Beethoven, and World Party, without the vocal sassiness. Eeeeeeeeeeeeh, I dunno.....

I don't like the stuff I've heard at all.

I bought one of their albums when they were released over here, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. There were three released at the same time. It sounded very Satantic Majesties Request. But blander. Rambling, pleasant, slightly eerie pop psychedelia. I liked it fine, but it just didn't stick with me. I hear their other records are more rawk.

Been following them since they formed out of the ruins of the MC5-worshiping Union Carbide Productions. Both _Welcome To The Infant Freebase_ and the new one are big sprawling splats made up of equal parts of earnest rock cliches, Led Zeppelin worship, and a couple interesting tunes. Nothing that bowled me over, but interesting enough to me to keep listening.

Also, I thought the singer sounded an awful lot like the guy from the Beta Band, if that's a selling point.

Arthur, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I was expecting something more Union Carbide-ish.

Kris, Wednesday, 23 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think they're actually Swedes. '95 album "Welcome to the Infant Freebase" is just O.K. Bob Hund, now, there's a great Swedish band.

Does that mean I'd get to learn about International Harvester?

I got Behind The Music after seeing them at Reading Festival a couple of years ago. I liked it but thought it was the only one they'd done.

I then bought Origin 1 when it came out and discovered they'd done 2 others before Behind The Music.

I liked Origin 1 so much I went back and bought the first 2 as well.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 20 November 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

BEHIND THE MUSIC seemed like needed a better lead vocalist (xpost: agree with Arthur about overall blandness). Also a rockist producer, maainly to fire up the mix and fire the orchestra (and *some* of the ballads). I like their moodiness though, from Plant twee to paranoid Floyd.

One of the most boring bands I've ever heard, up there with American Analog Set.

I'm stoked to see these guys tonight - totally underrated band. Only recently found out that one of my fave punk LPs from the 80s - Union Carbide Productions - 'In The Air Tonight' (I know - GREAT title) is from these swedes in an earlier incarnation ...

first part of the sentence is spot on but aas being boring? the tunes, the warmth, the hypnotic groove. one of the most underrated bands.

Following up on my earlier post from 8 years ago. They're playing tomorrow and Friday and am thinking of going if only because I've never seen them live

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 25 February 2010 01:44 (sixteen years ago)

Also, I kinda want to go because I read the Joanna Newsom thread (and related Tumblr) and want Blustering Dumb Guitar Riffs out of sheer spite.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 25 February 2010 01:48 (sixteen years ago)

So in what otherwise could have been a dismal scene - 30-40 people tops out in the wasteland of Pomona, SOOL played like they were headlining Glastonbury in all their full-tilt ridiculousness. Love it!

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 26 February 2010 09:27 (sixteen years ago)

I'd like to see these guys sometime.

Nate Carson, Friday, 26 February 2010 09:36 (sixteen years ago)

Well worth seeing. Might go see them again tonight at the El Rey.

Forgot to mention, they ended with a Union Carbide song too

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 26 February 2010 10:05 (sixteen years ago)
