Make Believe *is* 1984

...and "Beverly Hills" is "Panama." You know I'm right.

1984 encompassed every one of Van Halen's tricks up to that point and exaggerated them wildly. Make Believe does the same thing for Weezer, and IMO works just as well.

Now tell me I'm mental.

so wrong

miccio (miccio), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

So wrong I might be right!

VH and VHII were the meat and potatos of DLR-era Van Halen, much like Blue Album and Pinkerton are for Weezer. The albums that followed, all of which have highlights, didn't seem as mindbending as the earliest work. So for 1984 and Make Believe, both bands took the original idea and amped it way up almost to the point of self-parody.

now I know how Al feels

miccio (miccio), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

candlebox IS the beatles!

strng hlkngtn, Friday, 29 April 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

while there are some similarities (synths, exceptionally boring album tracks) it ISN'T 1984 because nothing on Make Believe captures what's good about early Weezer and nothing on Make Believe is as good as the singles from 1984

miccio (miccio), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

if David Lee Roth sounded stupider on 1984 than he did on the debut than maybe

miccio (miccio), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

"this is such a pity" may be as good as "i'll wait"

miccio (miccio), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

plus the videos from 1984 were better than the videos for Van Halen

miccio (miccio), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

doubt it.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

I'll Wait is awesome!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

If only one of the tracks on "Make Believe" could have one of the greatest synth themes ever, like "Jump" did...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

I've struck a nerve, it appears.

(Should I point out that I actually view Make Believe favorably?)

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

It's a little too Van Hagar-predicting for me but it's a fun slice of anxious synth-ridden vaguely threatening inanity. As is "This Is Such A Pity"

x-post: well if you believe Make Believe is good then we probably don't agree on what made weezer good

miccio (miccio), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

doubt it.

this was a bout the weezer song being as good as I'll Wait, not the videos from 1984 being better than the VH 1 videos.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

I don't know that I've ever seen an actual video for a track off of VH I.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

(oh, also... =W= vs. =VH=)

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

I've seen "You Really Got Me." Them on a stage, Michael Anthony wearing a bit too much eyeliner, David Lee Roth trying to take off his pants only using his hips. Lots of fun but pretty one-dimensional compared to the later stuff.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

There are some obvious parallels but the thing that rankles me is that Rivers Cuomo SO is not David Lee Roth.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 29 April 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

plus the idea of Make Believe encompassing shit is beyond me.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 29 April 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

He's the anti-Roth!

Cuomo, I don't think, will ever make a solo record. He's too chicken. From day one, Roth seemed to view himself as a solo artist eventhough he shared the stage with a proper band.

I'm going to rejig my original statement. Make Believe *is* 1984 in Bizarro World.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 29 April 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

Another late thought: compare the harmonics action on the intros of "Top Jimmy" and "Freak Me Out."

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 29 April 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

I hope you're right, Johnny. That means Rivers will come out with a bombastic solo EP next year called Crazy From The Braces, followed by flounders. And Weezer will hire Graham Coxon as their new lead man/songwriter.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 29 April 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Mind you, nothing good will come out of this scenario, but it will be far more interesting than, well, another Weezer album.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 29 April 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Crazy From The Braces!!!
