I want to.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

why yes, i have. it was showing as part of a festival on the u of m campus. it's amazingly comprehensive (though it kind of glances over the non-current/non-coyne band members like ronald jones) but could've been edited better. but hey, when you're dealing with as much footage as this beesley guy had to work with (including some pretty crazy stuff chronicling their drummer shooting up and explaining what it was like), a bit of repetition is understandable.

highlights:
- wayne walking through his neighborhood, mowing the lawn and talking to normal ghetto-folk about his band.
- wayne retelling his "near death" experience of being robbed at long john silvers by forcing the new owners kids to re-enact it.
- lots of fire footage and bitching by gibby haynes
- .... a lot of other stuff.

their movie looks like it's going to be a very silly thing when it's finally finished.

one month passes...
My thoughts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 July 2005 08:47 (nineteen years ago)

I must have this.

Sweat Loaf (Sweat Loaf), Monday, 11 July 2005 10:41 (nineteen years ago)

Watched it over the weekend - very enjoyable. And this is coming from someone with lukewarm feelings for the Flaming Lips.

darin (darin), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

I've got it and it's awesome! Someone that doesn't care anything about the Lips can watch this and enjoy it, and the commentary is totally worth watching.

Joseph Cowart (Joseph Cowart), Monday, 11 July 2005 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

Steven Drozd made me CRY! This is a pretty glorious, beautiful film.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:27 (nineteen years ago)

Nice piece, Ned. Now I definitely want to see it.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

The scene where Wayne is making those kids re-enact the Long John's robbery is oh so rofflicious.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

Even more than just the realism of the depiction of Steven's drug problem, the depiction of everyone else's experience with his drug problem (his wife's admitted resentment towards Wayne, Wayne's not writing Steven such a big part in Christmas On Mars because he wasn't sure he'd still be alive by the time they were done) I thought was heartbreaking.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

five months pass...
I've just watched this. I didn't know that much about the lives of the band members before, and it's made the music even more remarkable.

It was pretty uncomfortable to watch Steven talk about his drug taking, but the way he, and everyone else, talked about it was so powerful.

jellybean (jellybean), Friday, 30 December 2005 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

i still haven't seen this.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Friday, 30 December 2005 21:16 (nineteen years ago)

Bought it on boxing day (well, returned the disappointing Seth Lakeman album) but yet to watch it. Everything i've read or heard about it makes me think it will be very interesting.
