In order:

Sleeper (cos they never really did a cack song and they are pretty brill)

The Bluetones (damn, it's a toughie - if we're doing it be albums then Science and Nature by The Bluetones is the best album no one has ever heard. Has anyone on ILX picked this gem up? It's utterly, utterly gorgeous. BUT - it'll annoy more ILXors if Sleeper are first so...)

Stereophonics (FUCK ME that last single was MEGA FAB wasn't it? The Stereos produce a few more singles of this quality and I'm going to have to start liking them)

Coldplay (Worst guitar band ever. Even worse than Van Halen. Or U2)

Cza, Sunday, 1 May 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

FUCK ME, damn, it's a toughie, but if we're doing it by MEGA FAB albums, never really did a cack song & pretty brill...I dunno.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 1 May 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

Fucking hipsters.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 1 May 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

yummy bod. slurp.

Frogm@n Henry, Sunday, 1 May 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

Late, just came back from the premiere, had to say...

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 1 May 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

There are pubes on my mouse.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 1 May 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Eight years indoors, and I give it up for this? Never going out again.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 1 May 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

Bluetones clearly had the best albums, "Slight Return" may not have been cool but it was glorious. Sleeper had the best SINGLE of any of them in the shape of "What Do I Do Now?". Coldplay are crap and have the most overrated song out of all of them in "Clocks", a record made for people who like meaningless stadium gibberish but still want to pretend to hate U2, and Stereophonics have stumbled upon 2 or 3 decent singles clearly by accident, given that everything else in between them was painful physically to listen to.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 1 May 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

Sleeper was a tart. Stereophonics was a muzzler. Bluetones fucking heavy petter. Coldplay washed under foreskin.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 1 May 2005 02:52 (twenty years ago)

I met Louise Wener, out of Sleeper, once. She said, "My business is to be talented, that is, to be capable of selecting the important moments from the trivial ones... It's about time for writers — particularly those who are genuine artists — to recognize that in this world you cannot figure out everything. Just have a writer who the crowds trust be courageous enough and declare that she does not understand everything, and that alone will represent a major contribution to the way people think, a long leap forward."

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 1 May 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

I longed for the morning to be over.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 1 May 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

And then it was, was over, and I wondered at myself.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 1 May 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

Did you look at her arse?

Frogm@n Henry, Sunday, 1 May 2005 03:04 (twenty years ago)

Are you serious?

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 1 May 2005 03:05 (twenty years ago)

And she makes lots of money and is successful and you are not - instead you are on ILX talking about your sex life. So...

Ha ha.

Cza, Sunday, 1 May 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

You tell him.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 1 May 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

Go on, tell him...it's 5 AM.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 1 May 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

Sweet dreams.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Sunday, 1 May 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

1. The Bluetones (because of Science & Nature)
2. Coldplay (I liked Parachutes at one time)
3. Stereophonics (first album is good when you are drunk, second has some alright songs as well, then they turned really bad)
4. Sleeper (pass)

BeeOK (boo radley), Sunday, 1 May 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

My father worked on a Stereophonics video the other day. Aren't they the band that ripped off Green Day's Warning (which was a rip-off of Picture Book)?

Cunga (Cunga), Sunday, 1 May 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

ummmmmm i pick coldplay...i guess

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Sunday, 1 May 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

sleeper wins on account of 'what do i do now' being one of the greatest songs ever.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Sunday, 1 May 2005 11:29 (twenty years ago)

I still rate What do I do Now as the best break up song ever.

Czam, Monday, 2 May 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

Van Halen?

'Jump' >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> anything on this list.

troll feeder, Monday, 2 May 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

Coldplay: Lots of brilliant songs, one of the best bands out there right now
Stereophonics: Somewhat overrated bunch with not too catchy songs and an extremely annoyingly hoarse singer with a Rod Stewart-syndrome.
Sleeper: Had one classic song, in "Sale Of The Century", plus another decent one in "Vegas". Doesn't hold up in general though.
The Bluetones: Started their career with two of the best singles of the entire Britpop era. Followed with a decent album. Then fell.

Coldplay is easily the winner here (and don't fit into the bunch because 1. they are really too late to be Britpop and 2. they are good an among the very best of their genre). Otherwise, I'd rank them as follows:

1. Coldplay
2. Bluetones
3. Sleeper
4. Stereophonics

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 2 May 2005 09:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm now at the point where people that like Coldplay actually fuck me off big time. They really are the worst guitar band ever.

Czam, Monday, 2 May 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

Sex Pistols are the worst guitar band ever (and still miles and miles better than James Brown and most hip-hop acts)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

"Science And Nature" was a bigtime disappointment btw. Lacked all of the catchy melodies from their debut.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Geir your theory about Sex Pistols being "the worst guitar band ever" seems odd if you look at I don't know a million heavier punk / metal bands.

elwisty (elwisty), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Those heavier punk and metal bands may have been unlistenable, but at least they could play.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

So could the Sex Pistols...

elwisty (elwisty), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

The last two I can't really remember and I can't pick who's worse out of Coldplay and the Stereophonics. They're the epitomy of each side of the total-and-utter-shit coin; one is adored all over the world for hugely dull songs that apparently are really deep and meaningful or something, and the other, well I have trouble distilling just what specifically is so shite about them but they seem like a bedroom band who would go their seperate ways after their failed first gig in the back room of a pub.

So all-in-all, shite shite don't know don't know.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Those who do not like Coldplay are completely unlikely to like any band, formed after cirka 1990, that consists of white males playing guitar oriented and ballad-dominated melodic song-oriented pop music. Thus, their opinion on Coldplay is completely pointless and completely uninteresting.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Geir, if you love Russia so much, why don't you go and live there?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Geir, I like the Delgados a lot. Do they fall into your field? They, you see, were great. Coldplay, um, aren't.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Geir that is such BS. I think JJ72 are really good - I even quite like a couple of Snow Patrol songs, but Coldplay are just awful.

Czam, Monday, 2 May 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

JJ72 are a rather heavy rock band, not a pop one, so they don't fit into my description.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

"YOU WANT THE TRUTH?! YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!"

Geired on Hongoro (elwisty), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Well, JJ72 are neither ballad oriented nor particularly pop, so they don't fit with the description.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

If you don't like Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen you just don't like music.

Masked Gazza, Monday, 2 May 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Well, you are free to argue that Coldplay aren't good enough just because their songs aren't catchy enough, that is that their songs just don't work within the criteria than they should be judged from, but I have never seen such arguments against them. In fact, it seems that just about anybody who loves traditional melodic guitar-oriented "indie" pop music tends to love Coldplay.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Geir, will you ever grow up?

ILX, Monday, 2 May 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Was that speech from Louise from her "how to write a novel" seminar course thingy?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

In fact, it seems that just about anybody who loves traditional melodic guitar-oriented "indie" pop music tends to love Coldplay.

I do (love melodic guitar-oriented indie pop), but I don't (love COldplay) Why you'd bother with tripe like Coldplay when your Scandinavian brethren are doing much the same thing but much better, I'll never know.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

You are aware thet you're all getting completely pwn3d by geir here, don't you

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

geir, you slam stuff from areas you do not have much interest in using inappropriate criteria all the time (r**kism!), so who you foolin'?

besides, as others have pointed out, lots of coldplay-hatas like melodic pop-rock.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

Sleeper > Bluetones > Coldplay > Stereophonics

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Geir, I note you didn't argue that the Delgados were way better than Coldplay can ever hope to be.

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)
