Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 2 May 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

"Dot Com" is already kind of IDM-y.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

i hear that timbaland sounds like mouse on mars

strng hlngtn, Monday, 2 May 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

oh jesus.

It's like indie kids that don't have any inner monologue.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 2 May 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

haha like indie guys like songs about having screwed too many women

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

I wonder how they handle Luda's part in "Yeah".

"Take that....because my outfit is ri-di-cu-lous....in the club looking sooooo conspicious..."

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 2 May 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

haha like indie guys like songs about having screwed too many women

Real indie kids know nothing about screwing women or men. After all, what's more DIY than masturbation?

Cunga (Cunga), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

strongo, don't pull that shit on me with you and your "Amerie sounds like drum'n'bass". I was joking anyway.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

haha chill fool

strng hlkngtn, Monday, 2 May 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

dude did you know kelly clarkson sounds like "maps"!?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm wondering if "Buddy" is a pseudonym for Grandaddy.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

i do love it when people refer to me as "strongo"

i kind of respect the clueless honesty at work in something like this usher thing

strng hlkngtn, Monday, 2 May 2005 01:09 (twenty years ago)

would you prefer "strng"?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:11 (twenty years ago)

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

I like that Vitamin anticipated this niche and jumped at the opportunity to fill it. This is probably the first in a series - Indie Translations Of Jay-Z and Indie Translations Of Eminem can't be far behind.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

Actually I would prefer a string tribute, Al! I've been collecting those for the past couple years - some of them can be pretty amazing!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

i am too tired to bother with vowels these days

strng p, Monday, 2 May 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

omg Jay-Z and Eminem are already the two most indie-safe mainstream rappers out there (ok maybe the black eyed peas)

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

"asetirongu"
And sometimes, "Why?"

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

Indie Translations Of Jay-Z = surely the Pavement and Weezer remixes of the Black Album

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

Oh god I really hope they do one of these for R Kelly.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

omg Jay-Z and Eminem are already the two most indie-safe mainstream rappers out there

Yes, that is my point!

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

hehe Matthew I was referring to the vowel-less form of "Strongo", not strings. those string tributes are sometimes pretty fascinating, though, I like some of the ones you've posted on fluxblog. do you have the Sonic Youth one that someone posted the cover/tracklist to in some SY thread recently? that's one I'd be really curious to hear.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

The BEP are not "indie"; they're "bad".

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

every time somebody disrespects "Where Is The Love?" i lose a little more faith in humanity

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

the indie translation of "get rich or die tryin'" is what i wanna hear.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

bep need to be shot into the sun

strng hlkngtn, Monday, 2 May 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

also every other white indie MC sounds like Eminem's album tracks, no translation needed.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

well now that they've given us "witl" and now have dropped "don't phunk with my heart" I may agree.

(x-post)

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

"phunk" is the godawful track haters have been waiting for.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

ok, but Anthony when you referred to BEP as indie-safe were you being sarcastic or was that wishful thinking?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm posting one from the Sonic Youth tribute tomorrow. That one came out well but some of the selections are kinda odd. I wish that they hadn't done "Superstar" and recorded "Cotton Crown" or "Teenage Riot" instead. On the bright side, now I have a string tribute selection I can file under The Carpenters.

They totally need to do a string tribute to 50 Cent if just because "In Da Club" would sound so awesome that way.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

"phunk"
HAW HAW I LAFF BIG

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

"phunk" is the godawful track haters have been waiting for.

I don't understand. What about the other three?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

dude what waiting? have you heard the first BEP album?

(xpost yeah i thought it was weird that "Superstar" was on there)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

while we're at it:

Probably my favorite mash-up ever, though, um, not exactly the most seamless

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

we have soooooo many of these tribute albs at work

strng hlkngtn, Monday, 2 May 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm pretty sure I have seen a string tribute to 50! my local Best Buy is fulla them.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

If any of you ever need to ditch a string tribute record, please contact me first! I might want it.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

If I was a richer man, I'd just buy them all. I rely mainly on slsk and buy the ones I can't find but want very much used. This Sonic Youth tribute is the only one I've ever purchased new.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

haha two things

1. I was referring to the pop BEP post-Fergie. God knows what those other albums were like. And I think the Elephunk singles don't deserve the hate they get.

2. They're indie-safe for the Jurassic Fivey people who think we should go back to the "yes yes y'all." And I do like how whoevers not rapping in the video starts busting moves. I know several indie people who dig them (not backpackers, Shins fans).

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

Jurassic 5 fans still exist? I mean I think even on the Okay Player boards they've moved on by this point and have accepted Jay-Z into their hearts.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

I actually LIKE J5. BEP is another aminal.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

da corny indie fuXor playas

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

I was just browsing the Vitamin and have two new string tributes to add to my want list: Limp Bizkit, if just to get the version of "Nookie," and the John Mayer one for the pretty sweet version of "Daughters."

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

I mean I think even on the Okay Player boards they've moved on by this point and have accepted Jay-Z into their hearts.

again, not backpackers, shins fans

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

Why the hate for Charlie Tuna?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

please, it's "chali 2na"

strng hlkngtn, Monday, 2 May 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

that's a loophole, only because none of them got around to making a Chutes Too Narrow/Black Album mashup. (xp)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:29 (twenty years ago)

anyway I really think the "bling"-hating old school-loving indie rap strawman of a few years ago mutated into one that loves Cam'ron and/or MF Doom

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:33 (twenty years ago)

cam'ron!?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

ok, Ghostface.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

I can give the full names of my "strawmen" (and women!)

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

haha even vibe or the source noticed the "why is cam'ron so huge on the internet?" thing a month or two back

stnrg hlkngtn, Monday, 2 May 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm not saying they don't exist. I'm saying they don't exist in nearly the same quantities they did 5 years ago, and even invoking J5 as a reference point for that crowd, if it still exists, is pretty out of date. (xp)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

You'd be right if I wasn't quoting them verbatim. Just cuz they're not in the blogosphere doesn't mean they don't exist.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

fair enough. but they actually like BEP!?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

I don't lie

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

Round up these people and force them to give up their leader.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

http://files.db3nf.com/pictures/authors/clinton.jpg

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I'm just surprised. I know some of those types too but if they liked BEP's first 2 albums then they were turned off by the post-Fergie sellout. (xp)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)

well you know how we like to party up here in central PA. and while they lost some fans they also gained new ones (album sold quite a bit you know)

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

yeah they dropped the backpackers for the altrockers. like following nixon with ford.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

yeah, but when a group goes from a moderate sales plateau where their fans can still champion them as underdogs up to platinum-plus, those underdog-cheerleeders tend not to stick around. at least I assume this is why I hear a lot less Modest Mouse at bad college parties than I did up until a year ago. (xp)

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

"Float On" is a dance hit with our indie circuit

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

and I think 'altrocker' as opposed to 'underdog-cheerleader' is the key phrase here

miccio (miccio), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

yeah maybe I'm over(under?)estimating Shins fans here. I thought even with Garden State etc. they still qualified as indie, not quite prime time KROQ, etc.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

On behalf of Mr. Clinton, I'd like to say that he has NEVER had relations with Fergie.
Leastways, not that Fergie.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 2 May 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

yeah they dropped the backpackers for the altrockers. like following nixon with ford.

"I am not a crunk"

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Monday, 2 May 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

Which reminds me: is indierokk nation on Edan's scrot yet*? I mean, how many other MCs pseudonamedrop the Velvet Underground?

*'cause I sure am

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Monday, 2 May 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

Among my circle of friends (many lefty uni types into worthy hip hop and folk and stuff) "Weekend" suddenly became the joint to drop at parties somewhat belatedly, maybe only late '02, not long before "Where Is The Love" came out and turned everyone off them (not me!). Then it was a mixture of Under Construction and "Hey Ya", and then oddly they caught on to Dead Prez's "Hip Hop"!

I should just buy them all The Coup albums and maybe that Jay-Z/Roots live collab-o. I kinda get impatient to see what's next in the cycle and I want to interfere.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 2 May 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

weekend WAS a big tune on the indie party circuit.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

not that i'd ahem know or anything.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

I loved / stil love "Joints and Jam".

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 2 May 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

turns out "Phunk" is kind of great. Mostly for the woman's vocals. But the beat is better than I expect from BEP too.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 13 May 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)
