KISS my Ass Tribute Album Question...

While looking at the liner notes to this album, I noticed that the notes are filled with various pictures of people's KISS tattoos but almost all pictures of Ace Frehley are very obviously covered up. You can tell they tried to be somewhat subtle, but its very obvious that they'e hiding Ace's face. (Even on the front cover, the only makeup you do not see is Ace's, as the kid's head is turned to the side showing what looks like it might be a profile of Vinnie Vincent's Ankh-warrior?)
Whats the deal with this, was there some kind of a copyright dispute at the time of this album (1994)? Did Ace have control over his makeup design or was this Gene being a spiteful bastard towards him? Any ideas?

The kid facing away from the table actually sports Paul's pre-Star makeup (sort've a lone ranger thing). Ace wanted more money. Gene said no. Ace, thus, was stripped from the project.

How Tommy Thayer (the current guitarist who sports Ace's make-up) is allowed to do so suggests that Ace must have sold back his rights to his signature make-up. But, at the time, it was still his own.

Sorry, not facing away from the table, but facing the little girl in Gene's make-up (ala facing away from the viewer).

Anyone checked under the CD tray? (Nothing to do with the question, just an observation.)

I can't remember, Ned (which tells you when the last time I listened to it was). What's on it?

I hear it's a picture of naked people smearing stuffed animals with DEVIL'S BLOOD!

Yay!

No, it's this *wonderfully* insincere message 'To Ace and Peter' from Gene and Paul yammering on about how the best times they had were when they were together and to please get in touch with them and crap like that. This was before the reunion and all -- and of course before the nonreunion. ;-)

See now that would be awesome.

When this CD came out, I spent an afternoon with these jokers for the sake of various magazine pieces...including one of those "I play you a song and record your hilarious reactions" features. I remember Gene trying to convince me that Half Japanese's "Every Hour" was a ripoff of "Strutter." Ha ha. They recognized Redd Kross' "Deuce" halfway through the first note. And had gushing things to say about Mott the Hoople.

What I remember most about that day, though, is riding in the Mercury Recs elevator with Gene and Paul, both wearing body-formed leathers. A gaggle of white-haired execs stepped in the lift, and everyone exchanged "Howdy Howie" backslaps and hearty greetings. I realized Kiss had obliterated the artist/recordman divide. After more than 20 years, they were more a part of the corporate leadership tree than most of the guys wearing Brooks Brothers. And they were really fun guys, but that was 10 years ago.

Later on in that life I got to make Boy George listen to Deicide, not that he minded, and subject a Benedictine monk to the church-burning terror of Emperor. "It's the usual sort of music one hears in a disco," he remarked.

Ian, you astound me. And I thank you for it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 May 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Wow, sounds like the first line of a show tune... Thanks.

although this time it wasn't bookended with "Heavens!" and ";-)" respectively.

Oh give it time. Sequel to The Sound of the Beast = Yay! Riffs!
