Help me identify this girl group song

A friend sent me a bunch of home made girl group compilations a couple of years ago and, as I was converting some favourite tracks to MP3 this weekend, I discovered that one was mislabelled. It's a Shangri-las esque corker, which I've labelled 'He Didn't Want To Fight', though the more obvious title would be 'Get Him'. Neither of these titles is right, tho', and my girl group fan friend can't find the name of the song in his database. I've loaded it at: http://s26.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0IEJPSG4E2YAM27EZV01HTXJ7A for the next seven days. Can anyone out there identify the song and group for me?

The song is Nightmare, by The Whyte Boots, I think.

Nightmare - The Whyte Boots

Spoken: Yeah, no boy’s worth the trouble that I’m in. My friends they told me,
they said I could win. They said, "Don’t let her get away
with it," but I never should have listened.

You can beat her
You can win
Look out she’s sneering
Better wipe off her grin
Get her, get her
Push her to the ground
Ger her, get her
Push her down

Spoken: "They’re right," I thought. She did take my Bobby away, putting
me down, showing everybody his ring. Well, I thought I’d like to scare her
a little, but I never meant to hurt her or anything.

You can beat her
You can win
Look out she’s sneering
Better wipe off her grin
Get her, get her
Push her to the ground
Get her, get her
Push her down

(Fight sounds)

Oooh, oooh, oooh...

Spoken: She lay so still. I knew that something was wrong. And I said,
"Help me, girls. What should I do? What should I do?!"

Run, run, run...

I tried to run

But it was too late
The cop held me
Said, "Girl, you better wait."
"Get her, get her,"
That’s what they said
"Get her, get her"
It’s all my fault she’s dead

She didn’t want to fight
She didn’t want to fight
She didn’t want to fight...

Spoken: I didn’t want to fight. What could I do? They were standing around.
I didn’t want to fight. Please don’t take me. No. Don’t take me. Help me,
somebody, please. Don’t let ‘em do this. No. No. No. I didn’t want to fight.
(Fade)

Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

I love this song!!! Masonic Kate started a thread about it a while back, like maybe 3 years ago, and it's stayed near and dear to my heart ever since.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it's killer... makes leader of the pack sound like kumbayah

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Heh, I knew what the song would be before I even opened the thread!

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

speaking of lost classics of the girl group genre... i'm still stuck on "sweet & tender romance" by the mckinleys. insanely tough.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Damn, I wasn't fast enough off the bat to get the answer in. It's a classic, classic song, though.

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Monday, 2 May 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

That is a good song, Fritz.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Monday, 2 May 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

for another "dead teenager" classic, download "Terry" by Twinkle (and hurry, because the mp3 won't be up for long).

reno sweeney (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 2 May 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

Yay! More more!

Jimmy Mod Knows You Eat Your Own Farts (ModJ), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it's killer... makes leader of the pack sound like kumbayah

well that's the worst of the major shangri-las singles.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

Is anyone remotely as into Michael Hannah (Twinkle's "lost album") as I am? So, so, ssoooo good.

"One day before I die, I'm gonna write across the sky
in great purple letters a million feet high.
They'll tell to the world of a love born to stay,
and when the world reads them, they'll know why I say..."

i would love a copy of that.

reno sweeney (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 05:46 (twenty years ago)

Would recommend it so, so highly to anyone with an interest in '60s pop and girl-groups. The whole album is ridiculously strong, and the little CD-booklet is 30+ pages and fascinating.

I could type paragraphs of praise, really, but instead I'll follow your YSI lead:
