Can Led Zeppelin 3 Have Its Own Thread?

I think it might be my fave. Shit, i dunno, maybe it's not. Right now it is cuz it's playing. I'm all about Atlantic Records today. Chic, Yes, Kix, Zep. Anyway, I love every song. There isn't anything I would want to do without. But I could probably say the same about 1 & 2. And 4. Maybe. But not the rest. Nevermind, I'm not choosing. But it still deserves its own thread.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

NO IT DOESN'T

The Ghost of See The ILE Contrarianism Thread (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

no, it sucks

AaronK (AaronK), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

fuck you bastard you beat me to it.

AaronK (AaronK), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

YES IT DOES DESERVE A THREAD. THIS ALBUM IS AWESOME, AS IS EACH AND EVERY SINGLE ALBUM THAT THEE GRATE ENGLISHMEN KNOWN TO US AS LED ZEPPELIN EVER DID, WITH THE POSSIBLE EXCEPTION OF THE SONGS REMAINS THE SAME WHICH DOESN'T SEEM AS GOOD IN RETROSPECT, ESPECIALLY AFTER HOW THE WEST WAS WON!

HATZ OFF 2 ROY HARPER!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 2 May 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I was listening to "Celebration Day" just last week - the number of different guitar tracks in that is just insane. "Tangerine" and "That's The Way" are fuggin' beautiful. And that rotating cover wheel is great fun to play with, if you have no electricity. (Side Two demonstrates that Led Zeppelin didn't need electricity!)

There've been times when I've considered III to be my favourite Led Zeppelin album; but then every Zep studio LP except Houses Of The Holy and In Thru The Out Door could make that claim at one time or another.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

DOOD. BEST ZEP REC.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

tangerine is lovely.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Especially the guitar break (SWOON)

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Do you mean the solo or the coda? I like both but it's the coda that floors me.

"That's the Way" hurts it's so beautiful. "Out on the Tiles" is like sunshine spread onto vinyl. Along with "Dancing Days", I think it's easily one of the most uplifting rock songs of all time.

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

The solo (after Bobby sings "...and I do")

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

Hate to nitpick, but shouldn't it be spelled Led Zeppelin III?

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

That segue between "Friends" and "Celebration Day" is damn near perfection. So good that Page even kept those two songs in sequence on the box set.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

What was the box set quote about III?

"After this album, people quit comparing us to Black Sabbath" or something like that.

Doobie Keebler (Charles McCain), Monday, 2 May 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

This is THE record in the catalogue for me. The "space" — the "ROOM" — that Page created for these songs amazes. And the songs! OUT ON THE FUCKING TILES? Wow.

Also it's the first "proper" Zeppelin record if you're hung up on the more appropriation-heavy I & II.

Let's neither forget the beautiful pinwheel sleeve and the Crowley runoff matrix: "Do what thou wilt..."

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

(My bad, Myonga didn't forget....)

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Monday, 2 May 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

WE COME FROM THE LAND OF THE ICE AND SNOW, FROM THE MIDNIGHT SUN, WHERE THE HOT SPRINGS BLOW

(worst song--"Since I've Been Loving You")

TONIGHT YOU'D BETTER STOP, AND REBUILD ALL YOUR RUINS, FOR PEACE AND TRUST CAN WIN THE DAY, DESPITE OF ALL YOU'RE LOSING

prince rupert, Monday, 2 May 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

best Zep album. the sleeve, the "folk" side, Out on the Tiles, nary a misstep on this one.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 2 May 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

"Hate to nitpick, but shouldn't it be spelled Led Zeppelin III?"

I'm so lazy that I didn't feel like making three capital I's. Here, I'll do it now. III. See, I'm not always so lazy.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 2 May 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

(worst song--"Since I've Been Loving You")

That's one of my very favorite LZ songs. III is definitely my favorite LZ album.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 2 May 2005 22:49 (twenty years ago)

It's the next album in their catalogue that gets misspelled the most anyways.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 2 May 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

we were were kids me and my friend Dan thought the ruin read "Zofo" instead of "Zoso"

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 2 May 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

My favorite Zep album. Gorgeous.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

I still can't figure why they left "Hey Hey What Can I Do" off this album. They must have known they needed to keep something back to sell box sets down the line.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe all of these "favorite album" claims! well, I can believe it, because Zeppelin fucking rules. but still. I always have the toughest time picking between IV and PG. III never really enters the picture. But that's cool, I know why people like it so much. Still feels slightly transitional to me. And "(Hats off) to Roy Harper" is still a trifle, as awesome as it is. There are no trifles on IV.

the guitar solo on "Tangerine" is just heavenly, one of Pagey's all-time best easily. and Sundar is right about the end too.

"Out on the Tiles" is incredible, just another one of those effortlessly funky, tricky Page riffs. The guy was THE master.

"Gallows Pole" -- so great. I love playing that thing on guitar. SO much fun. Anyone heard the Fred Gerlach original? Sounds nothing like the Zep!

"Friends" is so great. That's really the first time the boys went into the mystic, no? I mean, sure, they had already done the bad-trip psych thing, what with the bowed-guitar on "Dazed and Confused" and "How Many More Times", and the Theremin freak-out on "Whole Lotta Love". But "Friends" was the first time they brought in that ineffable eastern-inflected trippiness that they did so wonderfully. And yeah, that transition into "Celebration Day"! Man, I love "Celebration Day". Myonga is right -- the guitar sounds are amazing. "celebration Day" was always my favorite track on The Song Remains the Same too.

My my my, I'm so happy...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

(worst song--"Since I've Been Loving You")

You die now.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

I am dying to hear "Out on the Tiles" this morning, thanks to this lovely thread, but I'm not near my copy! I still say II is my favorite since it's really the first album I ever fell head-over-heels batshit crazy for (and now fucking look at me), but III is the only one I re-purchased in the CD era, which I guess is testament to its listenability. I still remember the first time I heard side 2 and being just floored. I think I was 13.

Do kids still fall for Zeppelin like this? I did it in the '80s. I wonder if it's a recurring phenomena that Zeppelin is always one of those band the kids like, or are they an oldies act now?

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

No, kids still like 'em. I live across the street from a high school and I can tell by the t-shirts.

57 7th (calstars), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, my kids and all their friends love Zep. The three late 60s groups they love are The Beatles, VU, and Zep.

Vornado, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Man, those would have been different camps when I was coming up. But those were different times.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Do kids still fall for Zeppelin like this?

OMG, kids LOVE Zeppelin now. Beatles shirts aren't so dominant among the high school crowd these days. That was more of a 90's thing.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Things that make this album great:

1/ The tape hiss before the first note in 'Immigrant.'

2/ The bass riff in the chorus of 'Immigrant.'

3/ The 'Hammer of the gods' lyric in 'Immigrant.'

4/ The mumbling and studio speak before the opening of 'Friends.'

5/ The weirdness of the guitars in 'Friends,' both the alternate tuning and the scales used. Does anyone else almost hear 'Kashmir' here?

6/ Knowing that 'Friends' was written when Page and Plant were becoming friends.

7/ The 'owoowowowowowow' transition and key change to 'Celebration Day.'

8/ "My My My I'm so happy" as someone else noted in 'Celebration' and the double-tracked guitar solo.

9/ The first 5 notes of 'Since.'

10/ The squeak of the bass drum pedal in the beginning bars of 'Since.'

11/ The solo on 'Since.'

12/ The time signatures on 'Out on the Tiles.'

13/ The banjo on 'Gallows' and how it comes in at the same time as the snare.

14/ The false start in 'Tangerine.'

15/ The wah-wah in 'Tangerine.'

16/ The coda of 'That's the Way:' shimmering. And then the tambourine.

17/ 'Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp': a song about a dog.

18/ 'Hats Off:' Thanks for the introduction to Roy Harper!!!

Yeah, my kids and all their friends love Zep. The three late 60s groups they love are The Beatles, VU, and Zep.

Well, it's good to see that the Doors have been replaced.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the Doors are dropping in popularity as well, although not as quickly as the Beatles.

I would say AC/DC and GNR are replacing them, and not so much VU.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's good to see that the Doors have been replaced.

Hahaha. OTM. No one in my high school knew who the fuck VU were but the Doors were all the rage.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

And yes Led Zep III is fabulous stuff. I wouldn't have minded if they had a few more albums in their catalogue like that.
