...ever made and thought "Yeah, it could be".

I've just chanced upon a couple of reviews of the Only Ones' 'Another Girl, Another Planet' that describe it as possibly the best rock single ever made. Listening to it again for the first time in around a decade, you know what? I think they might just be right.

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Monday, 2 May 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

that one is hard to argue against.

reno sweeney (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 2 May 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

"Good Vibrations" and "Bohemian Rhapsody"

I mean, obviously, not recent ones, as all the best ideas (that is, the ones that sound great and aren't just different and weird) have already been used a long time ago.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 2 May 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

xpost:

I agree, but I'd never ever seen it mentioned even in the same breath as the usual contenders. Reaffirms my faith in human nature.

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Monday, 2 May 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

amen to that.

reno sweeney (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 2 May 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

I was once at a very drunken party where a kind of concensus was reached that One chord wonders by the Adverts was the best single ever.

it isn't but it made total sense at the time.

"Superstition"

"Bohemian Rhapsody"

Yes! ....so many Cure songs?

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

"God Only Knows" certainly could be (in fact, I rate it ahead of "Good Vibrations", although the latter is more often mentioned as the best single ever)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

"Maps"

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Monday, 2 May 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

I was kind of looking for more unusual choices (probably forgot to mention that). So as regards the Beach Boys and the Beatles and Queen, enough already.

What's "Hunger Strike"?

Temple of the Dog (Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder)

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Oh. I think I'd hate that.

The Ada version of 'Maps' could well be the best single ever, although if I saw that in print I'd be more than surprised.

"So You Want to Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star" is a real good one, as "greatest single." Two minutes. I have no problem saying it's the greatest single of the '60s.
