A question about free improvisation...

I have always wondered, how do these musicians who are freely improvising stay consistently inventive. They don't seem to be repeating the same phrases again and again - so where does it come from!? I really am in admiration of these guys, its exciting music to listen to, but I really don't think I understand it much at all.

Also another question - do musicians enjoy music more than non-musicians?

they stay inventive mainly by listening hard to what others are doing. but, as with all things, their idiosyncratic bloops and bleeps will always return, just like a blues guitarists licks. it's just hard to tell.

I think musicians often enjoy music in a different way, and for different reasons than non-musicians. However, I don't think that is better, per se.

As for free improv, it seems to come (in most cases) from a deeply rooted structural base (rhythm/key/modulations/genre), off of which one can meander/build/etc. I, for one, rarely enjoy it.

Derek Bailey always sounds the same. Why is he so revered by everyone? Complete pile of steaming shit. All free improvized music sounds like people just making it up as they go along. What utter rubbish!

I seethe with rage at this bullshit!

I'm not a musician, and I certainly enjoy it in different ways than my friends who are. For example, I'm much more lyric oriented, while one of my friends can listen to whole noise albums. Wild.

I am definatly a beginner at the whole jazz thing, i play bass in a semi-professional combo, but we're all in high school, so we don't get that many gigs. basically improv is basing things off of chord progressions, so creating new licks for different songs is natural because of the different ways chords are placed together. there are certain changes used over and over again (blues, rhythm changes, cherokee changes, etc) where you can use the same licks or tricks over, but that is pretty much accepted. most people who are improvising on changes they have played before aren't freely improvising as much as they are building upon knowledge they already have and expanding on the chords and scales. i guess thats from a musician's standpoint though.
