How much would a record collection be worth that had one of EVERYTHING released in the 1960s? (In US dollars)

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

if they were a serious collector of 60s garage music and psychedelia, and it was sold off bit by bit rather than a job lot, it's probably not worth much less than half a million, probably a lot more.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

there would almost certainly be dozens of $1000+ records in there.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

is there a copy of the Denise & Co 45 in there?

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

including 45s

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

Is there anyone that appraises this kind of stuff?

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:17 (twenty years ago)

Millions, absolutely. I'd say without a doubt at least 5 million, maybe close to 10.

jared, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

that sounds a little high

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

this is an actual collection, not a theoretical one

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

everything from everywhere?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

exactly how many records would this be? appraising it accurately would be a fucker of a task, using record collector (the magazine)/goldmine type guides and set sale lists for dealers in each genre.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:23 (twenty years ago)

who has this? library of congress?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Yes, though mostly US and England but everywhere. it is enough records to fill floor to ceiling shelves in a large room with more stored in boxes.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

It is a friend of mine who died recently and the probate attorney asked me if I could find out a value of the record collection. Without spending hours in Goldmine and Discover, I was just looking for a general estimate.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

if it's, say, 100,000 records a vague ballpark figure of $2 million would be my guess. there are a lot of relatively worthless records from that period. but the monsters would add up quickly, too.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

very sorry to hear about your friend.

condition is everything to serious collectors so i'd make sure they're mint or near mint, of course.

if there are any serious collectors/ record store people you trust nearby they might be able to make a good estimate in person. this just feels really abstract this way...

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

They are all mint or near. I was just trying to get a ballpark figure for now. If anyone knows anyone in LA who values stuff like this, and could give an appraisal for the court, that would be much appreciated info.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

Call Princeton Record Exchange (609-924-3472), I think they have a 24-hour emergency Delta Force team ready for dispatch for exactly this kind of thing.

Keith C (kcraw916), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Really? Are you serious?

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

Shirley you can't be serious? 24-hour dispatch? Hah, that's awesome.

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:45 (twenty years ago)

thats insane--is it only the 60s, is it just stuff in one genre, what did this guy do, does it feature thinks like the beatles butcher cover ?

anthony, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

I meant in general.
Dammit I'm going to call that number and hope you haven't hooked me up with a TV psychic or a porn line ;-)

yes, beatles butcher cover--and a poster of it to boot

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

Can you take a picture of this collection and post it? I'd love to see what this massive collection looks like.

buck van morrison (Buck Van Smack), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:48 (twenty years ago)

if that doesn't work i suggest getting on the spectrop or bomp lists tonight and asking someone on there to help out.

that might be opening certain floodgates a tad early of course...

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

and other ephemera like 60s Fillmore psych posters and band flyers. I have NO idea how to value that stuff. And also press files of punk/new wave bands from the 70s and 80s with photos/press releases notes from the band etc

haha! It just looks like a room full of LPs and 45s

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

im sorry to hear about your friend!

why not just research gemm.com? you should be able to get a general idea of what some of those records sell for.

and yeah, call the princeton record exchange.

i think everyone who has posted on this thread deserves a record as a "finders fee" or something. [im kidding]

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

I would work hard to compensate the person who could help me sort thru this mess.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

and I forgot to mention about a thousand bootleg cassettes of live shows from the 60s to the 90s.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

orbit you could also try posting this question to the psychotic reactions forum?

http://www.garagepunk.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=2

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

This guy is pretty reputable, I think:

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

i think i barfed in my mouth a little considering the awesomeness of this collection. this is truly amazing.

i think however like most heist films (apologies for the ref, but it's the nearest example), it'll be difficult to find just one fence for this. i'd third the PREX suggestion and imagine that they must know folks who can help sort this stuff out. you'll be in good hands.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the suggestions, I've followed up on them!

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

EVERYTHING released in the 1960s?

huh? like everything released everywhere, from toledo to the far corners of the soviet union to kinshasa to sri lanka? such a collection is sort of unfathomable, let alone price-able.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

What if I went back in time to 1969 and recorded an album, released it on an independent label, and proceeded to bury it in a ditch where it still hasn't been discovered 36 years later? How much would it make your record collection of everything depreciate now that I created one album you don't have?

Cunga (Cunga), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 03:54 (twenty years ago)

does the collection include this early '60s john kerry classic?

http://prorev.com/403electras.jpg

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 04:00 (twenty years ago)

If you (or whoever now controls the collection) donated it to an archives, especially one that actively collects sound recordings, they might appraise it for you. They might even buy it, considering the collection's massive coverage.

But you would probably have to donate first, then get appraisal second, though. & that might defeat the whole purpose of geting the appraisal.

Eggzakly Huh? (Zach), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Rickey Wright--I talked to the guy you recommended on the phone tonight and the problem is solved!
Cheers!

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Glad to hear it, Orbit.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

IT'D BE WORTHLESS COS THE 60'S SUCKED. only the 50s the 80s truly ruled. an argument could be made for 1960-1964 *OR* power-pop.

corey c (shock of daylight), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

awesome -- rickey saves the day.

i want that guy's job though -- music appraiser? fuck. that might even beat soundtrack compiler person.

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

The PEOPLE OF THE WORLD should chip in and buy this for the common good. And get hold of the rights while we're at it, digitise the lot and put it on the INTERWEB woohoo!

OleM (OleM), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

it is enough records to fill floor to ceiling shelves in a large room with more stored in boxes.

Huh? Surely everything released in the 60s (even if it's really just UK and US) would take up far more room than this? I mean, I know 'large' and 'boxes' are a bit vague, but this just doesn't sound the right order of storage space to me. I dunno how I judge these things.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if that first Cosmic Michael lp is in there, that'd be great!

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

You still going on about Cosmic Michael?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

i have a problem

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

though Stoufville Grit are coming up fast on the inside

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:32 (twenty years ago)

Popsike has the prices old vinyl realised on internet auctions, mostly ebay of course. It would take several hours (days?)to go through a collection as big as the one described.

Cosmic Michael has two entries, the prices realised, $200 and $252. Is this an album we should know about?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:35 (twenty years ago)

the first lp is pretty great, psychey with analog keyboards and stuff. havent heard the 2nd lp. it has a touch of outsiderism about it, perhaps, i dunno. i'll put up an mp3 later maybe

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

it clearly isn't absolutely everything released in the 60s, not even just the US, and would be impossible to collect, even if you were buying in the 60s or being sent promos then. there are simply too many budget labels, tiny independents, private presses, withdrawn issues, etc. even just getting everything released on a major label would probably be impossible. i have no idea of how many records were released in the US in the 60s, but i'd estimate that it could be somewhere between 1 to 5 million - that guess could be way out, but it's certainly more than a room full!

getting everything that charted is a different matter, particularly if you took just the top 40 charts for singles or albums - there are a few collectors in the UK who have every charted single, for example...

michael2 (michael2), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

Uh, when you're talking tens of thousands of records worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, I don't think a call to a record clerk is the way to go. Seems to me you need to get someone who works in Estates involved. I'm sure there's a commission but pricing this collection would be a lot of work.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

"i hear
that you have a compilation
of every good song
ever done
by everyone..."

or how it was in that losing my edge track

nique (nique), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:12 (twenty years ago)

when you find out can you post the sum orbit?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...

teh Nü and Impröved john n chicago (frankE), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Apparently the value of this UNFUCKINGPRECEDENTED COLLECTION was determined OVER THE FUCKING PHONE AND NO ONE ON THIS BOARD QUESTIONED THIS

Michael Burble, Thursday, 14 July 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

also - there was no discussion of formats - the discovery of the recent velvet underground acetate from '65 is an example of a big defining factor - obviously that wasn't in the collection, but would bolster its worth quite a bit...

chris andrews (fraew), Thursday, 14 July 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

Michael,
Why do you say the value was determined over the phone?

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Are you at liberty to tell us how much this collection went for, Orbit? A ballpark figure, at least?

Lingbertt, Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

After August 22nd, I think I can say something, but not before. Sorry to be so secretive, but it's part of a contested estate and I don't want to say anything until after the court date. But I will update you after that.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 14 July 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

still wondering if either of the cosmic michael lps are in this lot

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 14 July 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

i wonder if my pa's record is in here, amateurist's dad sings the hits of patsy cline and moondog in fake stereo

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 14 July 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

Bah, I'll be out of the country on the 22nd, and I don't know how much 'net access I'll have. I guess I might have to wait till September to find out. Totally understand the whole court thing though, Orbit.

Lingbertt, Friday, 15 July 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

The problem would be getting someone to pay whatever it was worth. To realize the most cash, you would do well to hire a container, ship it all to Japan and spend a solid week in Nishi-shinjuku, going to each record store.

SoHoLa (SoHoLa), Friday, 15 July 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

Orbit...was a fake. He put this entire board on his HA HA list. No record collection ever existed. Thanks for the fun...now go away.
