For those of you write on music: do you ever get frustrated with your editor? with the edits made? what do you do about it? fume in silence, demand changes, or just bitch? is it inevitable?

A few recent experiences have me particularly frustrated.

I notice he doesn't even READ my reviews. Grrr. Of course it enables him to say my writing is good. hah!

has ILM had a discussion on this before?

I get frustrated with myself a lot for being a lazy editor and not a very good one at the nuts-and-bolts stuff.

I bitch. I bitch a lot. I haven't had enough experience w/ editors, though, to truly appreciate what they do (and what they have to do).

Were I an editor, though, I'd be a merciless pen-wielding barbarian. Hack hack hack. Not out of any sense of revenge, mind you - that's just the way I am. Hack hack.

My editors never suggest anything to me -- and I don't mind, really. Not that I think I'm great, but I do think I'm a pretty good self- editor...

Once something's published I forget it ever existed. Spilt milk, innit?

The original piece de annoyance was the change from:

"they've got that whiny doleful sensitivity that appeals to the Counting Crows crowd."

to:

"they've got that whiny doleful sensitivity that appeals to the masses." -- which changes the attitude entirely.

Legione, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gawd that is awful. Maybe I'm not such a bad editor after all.

Tom, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I knew that would particularly bug you.

Legione, Thursday, 24 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm relieved. I thought this was going to be a Roger Waters thread.

Actually I thought Tom's editorship improved the last piece I did for FT so there are no complaints from this end.

four weeks pass...
Ever turn in something, read what ran, and think, "hmm, that faintly resembles something I wrote recently"? >:(

I'm disappointed. I thought this was going to be a Roger Waters thread.

I get published in German, and it's usually my own damn fault when my editor mangles my stuff -- if I don't take the time to remove every possible grammatical error or non-idiomatic turn of phrase, editor REWRITES THE WHOLE DAMN ARTICLE, even the parts that were perfectly ok. All that usually remains intact is whether I liked the movie or not. But I'm quiet, 'cause if I don't screw up the grammar (which is most of the time), he doesn't screw up my article at all.
