Flute Jazz

Go ahead and scoff, I don't care.

What I want is some jazz flute. As context, this desire was brought on by listening to the Beasties' "Song for Junior", and that is the vibe I am looking for. Latin drums. Vibes/marimba a plus. Flute bossa, if you will. I also enjoy some of Karl Denson's flute work.

Put it another way: you're throwing a party in the roof garden of your Rio penthouse. What do you play?

Chris Wright (DrFunktronic), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Dave Valentin.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Ron Burgundy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

You just couldn't resist, could you.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

An open goal, I realize.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

There's a sixteen minute track on Coltrane's Expression album (which I think is my favorite Coltrane album!) called "To Be" on which both Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders play flutes. It is ggggggggrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeebbbbbbbbbtttttttttttttttt ...

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't know who this Chris Wright douche is, but his forced attempts at stylish eclecticism tire me to my marrow. My very marrow.

Justin, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

You could also buy a bunch of Rahsaan Roland Kirk cds and make a mix out of all the flute (and nose flute) tracks.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

There's also Herbie Mann.

Eric Dolphy

PappaWheelie, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

pharoah sanders, don cherry (all sorts of worldy flutes) and bobby humphries are all kick ass

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

that's actually Bobbi Humphrey

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Jazz flute sounds best when it's only backed by bass and drums. Something about its timbre clashing with the piano and/or vibes annoys me.

Keith C (kcraw916), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

The best jazz flute ever is by Eric Dolphy, and it is on the track "Stolen Moments" from "Blues and the Abstract Truth" by Oliver Nelson.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

the original post sounds like an exact description of herbie mann!

oh shit xpost

the album i have is "st thomas", i recommend it

Herbie Mann - Live at the Whisky
Robin Kenyatta - Girl From Martinique

Anything else by those guys. Deodato, Huber Laws etc. Search much of the CTI catalog.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

shit. xpost - also Hubert Laws

[that bastard] jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Hubert Laws, not Huber.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

xpost obv.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Also, Charles Lloyd played flute sometimes. The "Love-In" album is a good one and has a great sleeve too.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

The title track on "Sweet Honey Bee" by Duke Pearson has a nice laidback groove.

todd (todd), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

ah fuck. it's a CD called Heavy Flute that 32 Jazz put out a few years ago. I think it's out of print now but used copies are easy to find.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Alan Silva's Skillfulness. Although Latin beats will be hard to find on that album.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

jeremy steig 'Monium'

ronny longjohns (ronny longjohns), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

Rahsaan Roland Kirk's "I Talk With the Spirits" is a record that features Kirk's flute playing.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

James Galway?

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

What I want is some jazz flute. As context, this desire was brought on by listening to the Beasties' "Song for Junior", and that is the vibe I am looking for. Latin drums. Vibes/marimba a plus.

I did a simple search (not much else is possible anyway) at descarga.com, and all these CDs came up under "vibes" and "flute" (together):

http://www.descarga.com/cgi-bin/db/process

Not all of this will be jazz. Some will be descarga, which is close enough to Latin jazz to maybe be acceptable. Some might be salsa, etc., and maybe you don't want vocals. (Oh but you seem to have been thinking Brazil rather than Afro-Cuban, Afro-Rican, NuYorican.)

Also, I love the flute playing (mostly by Marshall Allen) scattered across Sun Ra's albums, mostly in the 60s, but there isn't necessarily one album where it's there consistently. Fate in a Pleasant Mood comes close, I guess.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Let me try that link again:

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

Okay, well just go to "Quick Search" and put in the word flute and the word vibes. Voila.

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm a total sucker for the flute

I'd second

the Heavy Flute comp someone recommended (I bought it not too long ago from Dusty Groove)
Bobbi Humphrey "Blacks & Blues"

and add

Yusef Lateef "the Golden Flute"

Not jazz but The Ginga Trio do some nice Bossa Nova with the flute prominent in their music.

billy g, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

I'll confess to just reading the title and replies and missing most ofthe content of your question. The Ginga Trio may be exactly what you're looking for.

You can hear short samples here:

http://radio.terra.com.br/includes/internas_albuns/3/3777.html

Listen to

Yemanja, Carcara or De Manha

for example

billy g, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

33 answers and only 2 Dolphy votes? Make it 3 now. Check out "Gazzellioni" on "Out to Lunch".

space2k (space2k), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

I don't know that Out to Lunch is exactly the breezy, faux-Latin chill music that dude is looking for. Not exactly.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

"Gazzelloni" seconded. Dolphy and Roland Kirk are mostly the only jazz flautists who could hold my attention for more than a minute or two - it's such a puny instrument.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

Plenty of good Henry Threadgill flute out there, too, although it's not in the mode described above.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

I don't know that Out to Lunch is exactly the breezy, faux-Latin chill music that dude is looking for. Not exactly.

That's what I was thinking too, but on second thought a track or two from Out To Lunch might not sound too out of place thrown into the mix at his penthouse garden party.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Now I want to have a flute jazz party.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

I don't know that Out to Lunch is exactly the breezy, faux-Latin chill music that dude is looking for. Not exactly.

Fair enough.

space2k (space2k), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:59 (twenty years ago)

I love jazz flute. Two dancey songs immediately sprang to mind:

Frankie Knuckles - The Whistle Song (most of the credit is due to Eric Kupper for this one)
Gil Scott-Heron - The Bottle

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Hold the phone! I called my dad tonight, so that i could bring you:

Scott's Dad's Top Ten Jazz Flute Players List (Including sax and clarinet players who doubled on the flute):

In no order

James Moody
Sam Most (Abe Most's brother!)
Frank Wess
Herbie Mann
James Spalding
Yusef Lateef
Abe Most (Sam Most's brother!)
Jerome Richardson
Buddy Collette
Bobby Jasper

And there you have it.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 May 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

Jordan, when are you throwing this flute jazz party for ILM?

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 5 May 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

Haha, that's awesome, Scott.

The jazz flute party will be on May 20th at the High Noon Saloon in Madison, WI. There may or may not be jazz flute. Attend at your own risk.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 5 May 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, but the High Noon Saloon, Madison, WI sounds like the antithesis of the Rio Rooftop Penthouse Party you promised.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 5 May 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

Do they at least have tapas?

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Thursday, 5 May 2005 09:30 (twenty years ago)

There will be no tapas. It's a trap.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 5 May 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Ron Burgundy.

But that's "Yazz" flute. (xpost)

three months pass...
Jazz flute sounds best when it's only backed by bass and drums.

So yeah, I posted this a while back...this stems from an elusive track I heard at a record store like 10 years ago that I've never been able to find. It was flute, bass and drums, and I'd say definitely from the 60's based on the sound of the recording and the style. 4/4, swing beat, medium tempo. Anyone want to take a stab?

Keith C (lync0), Thursday, 11 August 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

60s swing flute? Maybe something by Frank Wess?

todd (todd), Thursday, 11 August 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Maybe something like Laurent Garnier's So Flute?

Harrison Fjord (Harrison Fjord), Thursday, 11 August 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

Yusef?

Ooh, ooh, maybe Thomas Chapin!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 12 August 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it's these modern guys because it was on an LP, plus just judging from how the drums & bass sounded on the record I could tell it was recorded in the late 50's-60's.

Yusef is a good stab and was probably my guess at the time, but I actually went through AMG once and couldn't find one record where he was leading a trio from that era. I guess it could also be RRK too, but it sounded a little more mainstream. Frank Wess is a definite possibility as well.

Keith C (lync0), Friday, 12 August 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

Would you care for some flute jazz, backed by a big band, but with no moog even if the title says so?

Kaiser of Köln (Kaiser of Köln), Friday, 12 August 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

Robin Kenyatta strongly seconded, by the way, for seekers of killer flute jazz

"flute thing" by blues connection is choice. love this stuff.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Monday, 19 October 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)

weird timing. currently listening to this bluesy psych album by Jeremy & the Satyrs and "lovely child of tears" is a great flute-jazz jam. kinda spacey. dual flutes. and "(Let's Go To The) Movieshow" is a funky blues rock track w/tons of flute on it.
